@@claymathewselevator8121 I agree, but he was a high flyer he might be too old to pull of those moves now 😭 but he was very entertaining back in the day forsure!!
The reason why that anti-hero face gimmick failed was because as Paul would reveal in an interview "Vince was clueless and not caught up with the current pop culture interest and love for Privateers, and anti-hero/anti-heroine pirates that the first Pirates of the Caribbean film PotC: Curse of the Black Pearl ushered in." Meaning the reason why "Pirate" Paul Burchill didn't get the right booking or writing was because Vince was behind the times and failed to realize the success of the first Pirates of the Caribbean film meant fans would totally support a properly booked anti-hero face who was gimmick was that of a noble, courageous, and kind-hearted pirate.
It’s already been mentioned in the comments, but Pirate Paul Burchill was really fun and was getting over before Vince abruptly pulled the plug (reportedly due to not knowing pirates were really popular at the time, having never heard of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies). Another fun one I miss: the Vaudevillains. I thought the gimmick was unique and original, a couple of classic 1920s mustache-twirling bad guys who wanted to bring back the days of “catch-as-catch-can” wrestling. It just didn’t get much of a chance on the main roster.
I think its because mainstream fans don't really get weird stuff like the Vaudevillains. NXT was basically an indie promotion with a billion dollar company funding them so it attracted fans of the indie style, it ran out of Full sail university which is a college dedicated to filming and gaming so the outlandish stuff appealed to that artistic crowd and it was based in Florida which is historically great for wrestling, as long as you can put on a decent match and cut a promo Florida will back you. The only "out there" gimmick that I can remember doing well on the main roster is the Wyatt family. the Ascension, Adam Rose, Broken Matt Hardy, Kairi sane and The vaudevillains all failed to click on the main roster because that audience isn't looking for an alternative to wwe formula
Paul Burchill I remember when he showed up he scared the Little person wrestlers that were there let's get the crapout of them and you just showed up I don't know where that was always funny with me for some reason 😄
@@emanuelmartinez7267 I’d argue gimmicks could go so much further if they let it. Creative has all the control here, and just like this video points out there have been SO many gimmicks with huge potential. Since it’s a gimmick though, it’s always written off before it can start. While fans may not be looking for an alternative, it WOULD works huge dividends. Look at the 96 - 2001 roster. arguably wwe’s most iconic roster stretch, and it’s chocked FULL of great gimmicks that got the green light for the main card. I’m pretty sure the hardy boyz were a gimmick in being “extreme” but we didn’t know they would actually have mic skills until later in their careers. Arguably the most legendary team of all time, even more so than the NWO. (id say the end of the wcw run hurts NWOs legacy..) I was really a fan of deuce n domino And you are right about the tag titles During 07 09 the titles were barely featured in PPVs relegated to dark shows or defenses on the weekly shows
Deuce & Domino had a short run, but they are one of my all time favorites. They lived that gimmick and it was so much fun! Jimmy Wang Yang was also super fun to watch. Such a shame ...
Jean-Pierre Lafitte getting buried by the Kliq was his biggest obstacle in WWF, same with Shane "Dean" Douglas. Regarding Chris Candido, somehow I doubt HBK was the only one in the WWF locker room having "Sunny days" at that time.

Original Doink the Clown has to be on here! Matt Bourne played that role to perfection, and of course it ended too soon! They could have done so much with the schizophrenic/bi-polar and sadistic clown who was an expert grappler and technician role!
Matt Bourne's Indy doink was pretty dark in comparison. And his Bourne again character in ecw was awesome too the whole BPD and losing the plot because he'd been forced to play a clown was a nice twist.
It was very controversial at the time and def wouldn't fly today. But most people watching weren't making fun of Eugene. Instead, they were rooting for him. I sure was. I loved when he could do all the random finishers.
I still remember the first time I saw Jimmy Wang Yang on Smackdown... it was definitely a wtf moment hearing that good ol boy accent on an Asian dude... but he totally sold it and knew what he was doing in the ring...
I feel like Jamie Noble's trailer park gimmick is underated. Dude was was cruserweight champ for most of 2003 and then gone and forgotten before 04 ended. Dudes run was so dominate and so brief that he was never in a WWE video game.
I think that KWANG was a very underrated gimmick. That was the first wrestler I remember being excited about as a kid watching back in 1995. A wrestling ninja who spits. What's not to love? He was even a playable character in WWF Raw 32X.
As a huge fan of Kushida and Back to the Future in general I agree with him being on the list. He's a great Technical Wrestler and has a unique charisma about him. He's an underappreciated MVP of the Pandemic Era I honestly feel he should have beat Gargano at Takeover Vengeance Day for the North American Title. Hope to see him on the main Roster one day and booked the way he deserves
I believe Al snow was also MMA guy helping train Dan sevrine and became The avatar for a second. Also take a shot everytime you hear how Shawn screwed so many people's lives
It's interesting that many of these have 2 things in common. They're on the small-mid size range (in relation to other pro wrestlers) and despite being "gimmick guys" were very talented in ring performers. Definitely makes you wonder what if
Jimmy Wang Yang's character had SO much potential just thrown down the drain. Could have been in a stable with Cade and Murdoch or Jesse and Festus. And was mid card enough to hold the US title. A large number of WWE fans, if not the majority, are southern kids. This would have been a hit.
Jimmy Wang Yang owns a Red Neck Party Bus company in West Chester Ohio. My friends rented it for my birthday and he drove us around Downtown Cincinnati. Super nice guy!!!
Part of the reason The Mountie was dropped so quickly was that the actual Canadian Mounties did, in fact, get quite upset with the gimmick despite how nice he tried to be in Canada. I believe they actually threatened the WWE with a lawsuit for defamation, hence why the gimmick was changed to a more comedic one with a more slimmed down gear appearance before the Quebecers were introduced. Also, one little known fact about Shane Douglas is that he had a brief run in WWE in early 1991. He was actually a participant in the 1991 Royal Rumble.
As a Native Texan, I'm here to tell you that guys like Wang Yang are real. Black Red Necks are real too and Black Cowboys are very real. It's true, it's very true.
In the same vein as Losing Streak Curt Hawkins, I absolutely LOVED Heath "I got kids to feed" Slater. Perfect for the post-pipe bomb era of reality wrestling.
Man, I miss Deuce N Domino. You never get a tag team like that, and it's such a shame. I liked the greaser gimmicks. And who would've thought that Dean Douglas would be the precursor to Matt Striker's teacher gimmick too?
I remember Kama in his days in the Million Dollar Corporation, he was my favourite member of the Corporation and he was brutal and tough. It's too bad though that he wasn't used properly but at least his character got a good send off in the 1996 Royal Rumble as he was the 2nd last girl to be eliminated and it was at the hands of Diesel after a brutal fight between the two men PLUS he caused Diesel to get eliminated by Shawn Michaels as Diesel got distracted eliminating Kama. Even when he came back in 1997, he still had that badass edge to his character which made him a valuable member of the Nation of Domination.
I thought Kushida got that gimmick from when he and Alex Shelly formed The Time Splitters because they split their time between the states and Japan and he rolled with it . Maybe im wrong . Either way Kushida is a great talent ! But so is Jimmy Wang Yang ! Great wrestler ! Silly gimmick but I actually dug it . And im not big on comedic wrestling . But that was a perfect blend if your gonna go that route . I wish he was wrestling now days though .
Yes it was ditched too early and the character would have to be a world title threat to truly garner the super heel he could have been. He could have been a menace sabotaging people who questioned him and fought him for denouncing his latin race, or something along those lines
In the same vein, Simon Dean was perfect as the guy you tuned in to (hopefully) see get the shit kicked out of him. Even more so once he got teamed with the Gymini.
Kushida's almost been one of mt favorite wrestlers coming out of new japan deep down vince would have had him chasing the 24/7 championship on the main roster
Jaques Rougeau was awesome. Great tag team with his brother. Great singles run as the Mountie. Great tag team with Pierre. Should be in everyone's boy stable.
I'm half way through but something tells me they forgot the most underrated gimmick of all time... Nails the Innocent convict(The babyFace that got violated by BossMan).
Nails got blacklisted for kicking Vince's ass. Don't remember why. But that's what happened. I saw him 20 something years ago at my local flea market lol.
