Steven Wilson - The Same Asylum As Before

- Lasse Hoile's brilliant video for The Same Asylum as Before has only been viewable as part of the live To the Bone concert experience until now, but with the tour finally coming to an end in a few weeks, the time has come to share it online, especially since it's been very popular and much requested. Lasse and the actors shot the video in sub-zero temperatures in Denmark in January 2018, so it sounds like it's a lot more fun to watch that it was to make. Enjoy!
Shot, cut and directed by: Lasse Hoile
Produced by Fade to Grey 2018 for SW Productions Ltd.
Papermache heads designed by Bente Laurenz Jacobsen
Woodface designed by Bettina Ejlersen
Line producer Camilla Schmidt
Woodface actor Nikolaj Buhrkal
Perturbed big-head guy Frank Rosgaard

The chorus of this song is gorgeous.
Definitely
Which one?
Oh
To all people saying this is his worst album. Consider this, To the Bone is his most daring and risky album yet, it deviates so far from his usual style. He his trying something new, appealing to a wider audience. I respect him for that. I love this album for that reason. Nothing SW produces will ever be bad or "not like his old stuff".
I love this album, es espectacular!
did anyone ask
This is a good album.
The downfall came on the next album...
To the Bone is a fantastic album. I know a lot of fans were not that happy with it, but I think it's a great mix of prog and pop. Was just watching the DVD of the concert yesterday. Good job, SW!
old fans get very upset when the public like them ///but they cant all be wrong
This song feels like it could be on Porcupine Tree - In Absentia and the guitar parts remind me of the song 'Prodigal'.
The tree dude from Harmony Korine's back! Seems he's been well
missed him quite a bit! Seems like it represents the bad things in our world, trying to get ahold of our heroes (bird man and woman and crazy faced guy)
Gotta be careful with those Scandinavian animists..... Tree dudes, rock dudes, wave creatures.
Can’t believe I’ve only just got into this guy his songwriting is absolutely superb 👌🏻 beautiful chorus
Glad i wasn't into Steven Wilson when i was 10, or I'd be having nightmares for the next week.
Michael Clarkson I started listing to this dude when I was 7 and I’m 11 years old
I also want to his concert for his hand connot erase tour when I was 9
@@alexweselinski I don't know that album.
Joseph Bennett UHOH ITS HAND CONNOT ERASE NOT HAND COMBAT ERASE AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA
A true modern day musical genius. Steven we love you ... you collapse the light into earth
His fans are way too fanboyish. They'd have an orgasm if he released an album of farts. A very average song. Were this a new, upcoming band it'd get lost in the mire.
@@Cheximus we love his farts
@@Cheximus also you are a fart of the earth! So piss off if you do not like the song and let us enjoy it
Where’s the guy who comments lyrics?
lol in my feed he's literally right above you. not even joking
@@bashar7964 dododo, dododo!

lol, toooo much...

Empathy. That's basically what Steven's music is. Heart wrenchingly beautiful.
Steven is humble. But he is VERY BIG!❤
whenever I watch the news or hear mad stuff on the radio I get pulled into a stream of bad conciousness, despair and hopelessness because I cannot seperate myself from the agony thats going on everywhere. Yet I have the feeling that I need to be informed in order to not become ignorant.
Its a neverending circle which prevents me from getting truly happy.
I feel like this is the first time a song and its music video expressed exactly this problem and yet again I am so grateful about having Wilsons Music in my life.
Mmm, it's a give and take. I've come to think those experiences aren't about the stuff out there, it's what's inside of you... sort of a product of how you internalize suffering. That's the difference between the extreme and the moderate. Tough not to let it get to you, but remember that it's not YOUR anger, or YOUR pain. It is just visiting. It's good to have dialogues with it, lest as you implied, you forget how to understand the pain of others. To reject it is to lose sight of compassion. And without that you really are just stranded on an island. No different from the perpetually shouting news anchor.
Think about it like this. You can turn it off. The source doesn't always have the luxury. Want to be happy in a world full of anger and confusion? Accept it into yourself and transform it into something better. That's something you can bounce off of people to counter the misery. And maybe then we can all be a little less miserable.
Still difficult. It's the hardest work a person can do. As I'm getting older I'm realizing the importance of knowing when to clock out. But what I don't do is allow myself into 'the same old asylum' as the song cautions to beware of it. The answer to 'same bad' isn't 'same good' it's 'new good'. Travel to new ones. How many different asylums can you find? And what can you learn from the yin and yang there?
That's my take anyway. Everyone has their own way of perceiving things and dealing with them. I can't even say my way is close to perfect!
@@differentbutsimilar7893 That's a pretty insightful perspective. Extremely relevant given the times.
Do you want your Creator to be happy about you?
Then be happy yourself.
As naive and stupid as this could sound
ALMOST NOBODY HAVE understood this.
Happiness starts with yourself. Take some sunshine before you wanna make others shine.
This album get better and better with every listen...and this track along with People Who Eat Darkness are gems that are only made better with their videos! Can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us SW fans ...
Brilliant as always...Steven is a peerless artiste....
Only a SW vid would have "Woodface actor" and "Perturbed big-head guy" in the credits. Nicely weird.
Woodface should become the SW pet
Steven Wilson is the true alchemist: everything he touches, turns into gold.

This man just keeps producing flawless record after flawless record I don’t know how he does it but I’m so glad
I love everything you create. Thank you for all the hard work over the years. Much love from Toronto Canada
I second that!
Also sending 💜 from 2 hrs SW of Toronto in London
why on earth he is not famous ???? i'm blown by his creativity . much love from morrocccccoooo
Wut?
He is famous, but painfully underrated
It's impossible and mustn't as the same time, to be "famous" or "selebrity", if you/its have that quality and musical rareness skills.
If he/its become famous, I won't be a listener anymore. Well, I do not think this is a will come scenario
Reminds me of that old saying, "Don't ever drop acid and visit Disneyland. There are things there that you don't want to know about."
Discovered that song in 2020, and fell in love with it....so good...stuck on repeat! why didn't i know of it's existence before?
I love Steven Wilson from all my heart ❤️
"I took a pill in Ibiza" bad trip version.
To The Bone is a fantastic album. Glad that I discovered it!
Well, at the beginning of this video..."the lunatic is on the grass" 😎
One of the few Artists who really think about the Art, not the business!
I am so happy that there's still music like this :)
That solo... Gives me chills..
"Local man haunted by Slenderman imitator."
'' To The Bone haunted by Insurgentes ''
This is brilliant! The message delivered here is justified. Thank you Steven. You're the hero the world needs.
Such a beautiful song with great meaningful lyrics and really awesome guitar love it👍👍❤
I’ve just seen the event in London they made, the visual art of steven wilson. Lasse Hoile said he recorded this on JUST ONE DAY. And the meaning it’s something like waking up and living the same nightmare over and over again. He was influenced by human crazyness, that’s why we can see images of world war in the woodhead character. That’s why it’s the asylum as before
I saw you live last year, and The People Who Eat Darkness and Same Asylum As Before were my absolute favorite songs; listening to you while the music videos were playing brought me so much happiness and awe. Thank you for releasing them on RUclips! They remind me of that wonderful performance which I'll never forget!
Jesus, this album is most high on my list at least, genius indeed.
Never heard of this guy until today. I like it. I’ve got some catching up to do
indeed!
The videos on the tour for this album have been brilliant! This one is right up there with People Who Eat Darkness, and Song of Unborn. Got to see all three for the first time in Chicago last year. So glad Same Asylum was released finally!
The guitar sounds are just powerful. I love it.
Steven Wilson is my religion 😛
The best drum recording ever on this song and album and I've heard a heck of a lot of good albums . The recording and mix engineer done a superb job....work with them again.
Did not expect to hear this in Watch Dogs 3
Me neither it’s pretty good right
He's British, i wouldn't be surprised to find pink Floyd references too here and there
*Watchdogs Legion
That's what brought me here and this is exactly my cuppa
@@ianjuarez2856 it’s the third in the series, stop with your technicalities.
Watching this in Dallas in Dec '18 gave me the chills, not because of the haunting imagery, but because every moment in the video perfectly demonstrates and mirrors the sentiments interwoven with the philosophy of the song.
GO STEVEN!!!!!! amazing!
One of Steven's better concert/tour productions. A very compelling story behind the album and another treat for the senses. Can't wait for another one!
Seriously, the slenderman should be scared of the big head guy instead the other way around. Dude looks horrifying!
One of the most prolific artists on our planet 😍
@3:03 I can’t get enough of this bit, I want an entire song of just this
Hey, thanx for being there through the tough times 08 09 10 yrs of century 21. I went through quite an incident during those yrs. And now I got everything I need basically today secured now! Let's just say the worst is over.
What a proper, proper tune. Too many SW hotshots to list now. Harmony Korine, closely followed by Dark Matter, Song of unborn and then this. 2019 and it just keeps getting better -. SW is just gonna run the shit out of everyone else in the next ten years!! Keep 'em coming sunshine, I can't wait.
There's something very Storm Thorgeson-y about this. Keep up the great work Steven & co. 😉
Dit nummer was mijn eerste kennismaking met Steven. Wat een album!!!!!! In het bijzonder Son of unborn - geweldig
Wow. This a wonderfully haunting song and video.
Any reason not to like?! SW notification.. Instant like!
So basically you are saying you do not like the music itself, but the fact it is published by SW? He can just record his poop falling into water and it would make no difference.
@@baumkuchen6543 the level and amount of quality that he has produced over the years is sufficient to give him a lifetime of respect. This isn't a bad song either.
Oh and of course it's his music we care about. I don't like his videos because he has the most beautiful hair in the world.
Cause the video is crap? (but music good)
Are you proud of all your failures?
Are you dragging mother nature down?
You believe you have dominion
So you force your lame opinions on me
And my eggshell mind
Wake it up to see through you
We'll all disappear in the same asylum as before
Make it up you always do
It's tough to live here in the same asylum as before
You have your inspiration
You control in domination, yeah
You represent the people
But you don't believe in free will for me
And my eggshell mind
Wake it up to see through you
We'll all disappear in the same asylum as before
Make it up you always do

You did such an amazing show in Tel Aviv

Quelle merveille cet album , pour ne pas dire celle ci précisément ❤
C'est enchanteur, aérien et entêtant à souhait 😊 Merci à Steven Wilson pour ce vrai moment de partage.
Jesus! SW never disappoints...
Never.
I love the nod to In Absentia-era Porcupine Tree in the chorus...
-- Nice mix. Well written and executed. Thank you.

True my man! Viva DeaDSec
Try his other works as well. I fully recommend his works on Porcupine Tree. Here are some tracks that I'm sure you'll love too: Anesthetize, Hatesong, Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, Trains, Futile, Fear of a Blank Planet.

@@kimdokja1354 Yes. This song does have distinct shades of the PT. I was pleasantly surprised to hear it while playing Legion.
What a video !!
Hiii
I've never done drugs but damn every Steve Wilson song trips the fuck out of me
So I saw Steven Wilson back in 2018, in Pensacola, and they played this. To say I was a bit weirded out by the video is an understatement. I loved every minute of that concert.
a hard rock piece, in an album, which contains many progressive pop pieces… Art rock and and pop rock. A majestic work which follows the sounds of the 70s. Bravo Stewen
thank yoy very much steven, its to listen to good rock... the quality and timing of each instrument is appreciated, very good work..a hug
This song is freaking awesome!
Felt a lot of The Scream painting by Munch as a reference ~~ anyone else?

Ok now this has a PT feel. Good job sir!

Hell. Yes. First saw this at the show last year, very cool to have it accessible now.
He’s truely a musical genius🔥
original and good,,, often wonder if the good bits are original and the original bits are good?
Thank you for finally posting this. It was hard to pay attention to you and this at the same time at the concert and I was definitely curious what was going on in the video
Great video for an awesome song!
Naysayers be damned. I'm glad you do you. Great video, and another incredible tour good sir!
Awesome 😎🎸🎶
Was waiting for this so long ❤️

just brilliant!! Wow!!
Brilliant!
fantastic stuff... nice visuals and audios.. Its always a pleasure to hear the future of music playing today :).. while knowing that 20 years from now it will be as fresh as today.. \m/ thanks..!!!
Never change, Hoile. Although recording the intro in broad daylight is a strange decision, to say the least. Nice and surreal, just how I love ‘em.
just gets better and better :-)
Love this song and seeing it live was so cool!
Totally enjoyed this on the big screens as the band played this live!
