- "Exploring Paul Butterfield Licks Part 1." I am using a "C" Hohner Marine Band by Tom Halchak of Blue Moon (Linked Below) in the key of "G" 2nd Position/Cross Harp.
This video and the others soon to follow are way overdue as Paul Butterfield has had such a tremendous influence on myself and hundreds of thousands of other musicians. Today we start with one of Butter's signature licks that employ a bending inflection that we will need later too for other Butterfield lessons.

Thanks so much for honoring Butter. There’s a high probability that many of us white kids not would have been introduced to the blues in the 60’s and beyond w/o Paul’s band getting out there and having Sam Lay, Jerome Arnold, Elvin Bishop , and my personal favorite electric blues guitarist, Mike Bloomfield in the early line up. It was. an honor seeing Paul’s band play in ‘71. You represented his memory well ( and still do ) at their Hall of Fame induction.. Awesome sauce J. ❤😎

Even Lester Butler had a bit of Butter in his arsenal.
Butterfield doesn’t get enough credit from other harp players because he didn’t tongue block enough in their estimation. He was an incredible player and he could sing better than most of the harp greats
They are jealous of the tone he achieved through puckering.
Yeah, that about right. The other players couldn't achieve the tones he had and also couldn't match his incredible timing. Hard to compete with genius I guess.@@stephenkatko3236
Im only 23 but I found PBB and Bloomfield a couple years ago. I showed my grandpa and he blew my mind by telling me stories about his days in San Francisco and. He gifted me a blues harp so I appreciate the tutorials.
Watched butter in small clubs in the 60s I'm a chi town boy, Jr, buddy, corky, Morgan field, wolf, etc, you my friend pulling it off fairly well.
But piss on the tabs,I play what I hear, rock on brother, awesome video +!!!!

I absolutely love Paul Butterfield. He was one of the first blues harmonica players I was introduced to and I still listen to some of his stuff today, even after my blues phase. In my opinion, he played the harp like how Jimmy Page played guitar during his early days in Led Zeppelin. Both of them had melodic approaches to their respective instruments, but still had that bluesy rock edge which made them stand out. And I love them because of that. There was a song Butterfield did with Janis Joplin called "One Night Stand" and he played some of the tastiest backup licks I've ever heard. That dude was incredible as a harmonica player and as a vocalist. He's in my list of my top 10 all time favorite harmonica players.
nice Jason you do butter nicely...Paul & lil walter..& you killin it ...butterfield !!!! saw them at Fillmore in frisco with bloomfield one show the introduced their bluse godfather Muddy waters for a 2 hour set with him...I saw 3 times Before I got drafted for Vietnam ...nice job thanx ,,He had such a warm fat tone

Paul tearing it up in Everything's Gonna Be Alright at Woodstock is cut I always go back to. I had the pleasure of meeting him in Boulder in the late-seventies. Very nice guy.
Great video. Paul Butterfield was one of the first blues harmonica players I listened to back in the early 1970s, along with Magic Dick, Charlie Musselwhite, and Alan Wilson. Hearing the Born in Chicago album was the first time I realized that Chicago was connected with blues.
Great analysis and yes PB was just great. Yes to taking time for the music to sink in-- that's when you really start to see all the soul and sincerity in his playing. Thanks Jason!
For me, getting my interest in rock from the early sixties forward, the presence of Butterfield was in retrospect the most important growth of the harp in the rock and festival scene. His band was IT!!!

Really great, heartfelt lesson, Jason! I consider Butterfield one of my biggest influences and have to watch Horn From The Heart every few months. I thought it was very appropriate that you were chosen for the Hall of Fame tribute!

I didn't realize Paul Shaffer was the one who called you for that gig. That's huge in itself, but to then _be_ the harp player who helps to induct one of the greatest harp/lead men in history...
I've lost count of how many times I've watched that video. Imagine how happy (and grateful) I am to have some Butterfield licks to to explore, develop, and add to my own bag of tricks.

Butterfield...true story here. When I was 17 I was driving around in dads car with a buddy. He asked me to stop by the CVS drug store so I stopped and let him out. He came back in about 3 minutes and quickly said 'lets go". Unbeknownst to be he did a little shop lifting of some albums. He told me to take a couple and one was Butterfield Live. I knew zero about Butterfield, had never heard him before. The first time I put the record on I was blown away and I have been a blues fan ever since. This album still remains my favorite album EVER. The power and emotion was amazing and that band of his at the time were simply great!! I am 70 years old now and am still in awe. It took me until I was 64 to decide to try and learn the harmonica. I try to play and enjoy every day. Thanks for the lesson and the memory Jason.

Hey J R , I think Paul wrote the greatest harmonica licks of all time .... He played super fast but when you slow those licks down they were not only so bluesy but dark and mysterious which makes them so cool ... I love just trying to learn and play a riff of his over and over while sitting around not the song just the riff .... It's a blast and the ruffs are so cool ... No doubt

I so loved that you were the harp player chosen to play in that tribute. But Zac Brown and Tom Morello? Both great artists, no question. But I felt they were both out of place in a blues tribute of any kind. Just my 2 cents.

When I first flashed on this my initial reaction was that it's a long time over due. Then I realized that Jason Ricci has shared a ton of himself,
his playing and his lessons with us RUclips followers. So, above all else, I'm glad to see and listen to this. I get tired of hearing how Paul was
the greatest white blues harmonica player. Butterfield was and is still one of the all time great bluesmen. As far as I'm concerned, he out-Waltered
Little Walter. He could easily stand toe to toe with with Cotton, Junior Wells, and anyone else playing Chicago blues and beyond. Don't get pissed,
that's simply my opinion. One other opinion is based on the RRHOF performance for Butterfield's induction. Jason pulled it off without a hitch, and
he looked the part. I immediately thought of class guys like Paul Oscher and Jerry Portnoy. What puzzled the hell out of me were the choices of
country artist Zac Brown and super showboat Tom Morello. I'm guessing that was Paul Shaffer's idea and it was a poor one. It seems to me that
there aren't many that can cover Michael Bloomfield, and not for lack of trying, but players like Tommy Castro, Coco Montoya and Chicago's Dave
Specter would all have been good choices. Anyway, thanks for this lesson, Jason. EDIT - 2-6-23: Talking about guitar players, I should have mentioned
Robben Ford, maybe the best proponent of the Bloomfield style.

Hey J R great lesson as always ... Paul was a monster .... I've heard before that Paul did not tongue block and I told this harmonica player who's pretty good up here in Philly that I heard that and he said Paul did tongue block ... I would think if anybody would know it would be you ... Can you clarify a little more ???? PS I was watching your hall of Fame performance for Paul's induction back in 2017 you were magnificent .... Might be your all time best performance ... To bad Buzzy Fightenn wasn't there to play with you at the gig ... I love Elvin Bishop but I think Buzzy was just as good when he was with Paul ... Rock On !!!!

I've always lip pursed since I started playing eight years ago but for the last month I've really made it an effort to work on my tongue blocking and now I'm getting more used to it ... One thing I like about tongue blocking is it forces you to put the harp deeper into your mouth I've noticed that big time when I go to lip purse I automatically put the harp in deeper and I can hear the difference big time with tone and volume now when I do purse plus it's much easier to play dirt and bend notes .... Any who I think you , Paul and Howard Levy are the three best I've ever heard ... Little Walters right there too ... What I liked about Paul and Little Walter's playing is they both wrote the best licks ... I can never get tired of working on them they just sound so cool and mysterious ... Your definitely the new modern day Paul your a monster keep it up !!!!!!!
Thanks Jason I dig Butterfields Blues Harp so much that when I bought my first mic I bought a Shure 540s pistol grip because I saw a video with Him cupping one menne I expected that if I started off like that He'd send Me a MoJo Hand with these Blues Harps ,if He did then somebody else intercepted because I've never been able imitate Him,lol He and Charlie Musselwhite are at the top of My favorites I don't try to emulate them at the moment my focus is on My Bros GutterGrunge kinda songs He's been writing trying to somehow make it work and not sound like some adaptation Original all Me like His Blues are all Him so in being Honest with Myself I suppose in a sense I am emulating Him in some fashion or another six to one Baby half a Dozen to another I Love You for What You do My Brother

PB, Pat Ramsey, and Alan Wilson are among my greatest influences. Thank you for featuring all three in tutorials.
Imagine how different the music scene of the 1960s and 1970s would have been if Paul had not blazed the way. PBBB's explosive set at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival was a seismic event, musically and culturally. His influence on popular culture of the era cannot be overestimated.

dumb question but ya know what they say.....whats the difference between a regular bend and a double bend?
Regular bend equals a half step in music, double bend is Two half steps , triple is three half steps and NOT a dumb question.
@@jasonricci so if I understand its the length of the bend counted in beats?
@@normandube9158 no a single bend is one half step (the smallest PITCH change in western music, like from a white key to a black key on piano.... think: JAWS 🦈)! A whole step is two of those think: "Do - Ray (mi, fa, so).

Your 2 double bend a little less sounds, to my ears, like the actual single bend, but the velocity is the key.
Pretty sure it's well flat of the major 7. We could put on a tuner and find out for science!

@@jasonricci that's cool. I tuned pianos for 30 years and have a pretty high accuracy rate regarding tones/notes, and I stand by my comment as being accurate.

Was love at first sight , and he wanted to marry me ..but at eighteen I thought marriage was a death sentence . He stayed a my parents house between gigs. We planned to escape in "87", we almost made it.

@@jasonriccione of my favorite memories of Paul was when he did a show with B.B.King in April of 87, he knew I loved B.B. and had him call me. I thought it was a crank phone call and hung up on him. He called me back..laughing..he was very sweet.❤️
