    Good looking pastures Cliff. I’m intrigued by your change of grazing program. I’ll be interested to hear more about it and see how it works for you.

    Just found your channel. I'm a little north of you and also graze a mixture of bahia and coastal. Your cattle and grass look great! I really like a pasture with some color in the cattle rather than all black cattle as far as the eye can see. Just subbed your channel. Thanks for the content!

      Multi species is good. This pasture is straight Bahia. Most of my other pastures are “multi species”. Keep on grazing!!

    I just started rotational grazing my two heifers to one acre paddocks and leave them there for one week. My pasture is mostly costal hay with some Bahia. They ate the costal bermuda and left all the Bahia. Do the cows Passover Bahia if there is coastal available? They didn’t seem to like it as much as the costal.

    • @cliffhonnasregenerativerancher
      @cliffhonnasregenerativerancher  Год назад

      The Bahia gets tough when it seeds out. My cattle prefer Bahia while young and tender but leave it to graze coastal, Jiggs, or Tifton 85 if any available in that pasture. If only Bahia available, they eat it fine. I think it’s all related to the amount of lignin and n the grass which increases in Bahia with maturity.

    What grass can you get to fro year round? I have a great coastal field that I leave standing but would rather have a different program that can grow spring summer and fall..located in Salado. Any recommendations?

    • @cliffhonnasregenerativerancher
      @cliffhonnasregenerativerancher  Год назад

      I don’t think there is a grass that will grow year round. In our part of the world the warm season grasses die over the winter and you have to plant rye grass, wheat, or oats for cool season pastures. The grass that may bridge warm and cool is Chisolm Fescue. I haven’t planted any but the company in Oklahoma says it will grow here. Look into that.

    What’s your take on savory grazing methods. And Bahia grass what are the benefits over say Arizona cotton top, side oats grama, and grammas in general. Which for central Texas I would’ve thought was a natural grass since I’m in sandy loam on the base of the Edwards plateau and that’s predominantly what I have growing here pluse three one, and Texas’s favorite, Sandspur, and beggar’s lice

  • @HeritageFarmsTexas

    Wow, those pastures look amazing. I’m jealous. What weed killer do you use on Bahia grass?

    • @cliffhonnasregenerativerancher
      @cliffhonnasregenerativerancher  Год назад

      Any of the sprays that have the active ingredient metsulfuron. So sprays like cimarron plus, patriot, or you can buy MSM 60 which is just the active ingredient itself and spike the weed spray you’re already using. The other ones I mentioned are what most people use cause they go ahead and get broadleaf and some woody stuff as well kinda all in one. Biggest thing on killing Bahia is spray it when it’s younger and hasn’t headed out. So in a real growing stage like a couple weeks after baling or when growing good in late spring or early summer.

    Not enough out there to watch about Bahia.
    I’m wanting to establish my property with Bahia, lespedeza, and fescue. I’ve always heard not to mix warm season and cool season grasses but I don’t have enough land to have winter pastures and warm season pastures.

    • @cliffhonnasregenerativerancher
      @cliffhonnasregenerativerancher  Год назад +1

      I think you can do both but may depend on region of the country. Where are you located?

      @@cliffhonnasregenerativerancher I’m in central Alabama, that weird transition zone, Bahia does great here, but so does tall fescue. I just haven’t heard of anyone overseeding fescue with Bahia or vice versa.

    Nice video I have a quick question. I have 6 acres and looking at planting it for cover and looks I plan to mow it like grass. Do you think it is a good option? I love watching your cows btw
