    Eren's hatred towards the Titans was due to the belief that they were at fault for humanity being behind bars, and that the death of the Titans would lead to freedom. But that isn't the truth. It was never the Titans, it was the world itself. His target has changed, but the goal has not: the eradication of the enemy.
    And I feel like that's why Eren is a brilliant character. He grows, changes, and swaps beliefs; but he doesn't. Merely the target of his hatred does. His character isn't contradicted.

      exactly. Eren has always been like this, just look at what he did to those human traffickers-he was always capable of cruelty. his ultimate goal is freedom. even if he has to destroy the entire world to get that, and alienate his loved ones in the process.

    What makes the sea scene so sad for me is that it's a summary of what has happened to the main trio. In order to get there they had to change as people, and Eren's words made me suddenly realize that the kids from the beginning of the story, or even one or two arcs ago, are no longer there. Just like their idea of the sea, they have been contaminated by the world

      @@djehuty7771 Honestly at this point seeing his development up to chapter 133, I can be almost 100% sure that he's depressed and just wants to be over with it all.
      I mean, since that moment he connected with his dad's memories in S3 and even before that at the end of S1 with Mikasa he's said things that makes me believe he doesn't even want to be alive, but he has to keep going.
      Spoiler chapter 133
      I agree with Reiner's perspective, Eren wants them to stop him ; since he knows the future and we don't, and seeing how he feels in chapter 131, I can say he doesn't want to be alive by the end of this and he also wishes for peace.
      We just don't know the extent of what he knows and why exactly he's going by such a drastic plan.
      Eren is in pain, I'm sure of it, he must be in such pain.
      If Reiner's theory is correct (as well as mine because that's also what I've been thinking) then he must be in such pain that he wants them to hate him and kill him. Of course even if he wants them to kill him, doesn't mean he doesn't have a reason why the act of being killed would change something.

    As usual, you amazingly express a very specific aspect of the narrative that this exceptional season captures so incredibly well...the loss of Eren's idealism, the motif of the sea, of freedom, encapsulated in the closure of the story pre-time jump/Marley arc, that beautifully poignant scene at the sea, and the inherent melancholy within what this scene meant for Eren's characterization and the arc's resolution. I really could not have put it better myself, and in fact, as usual, you capture my feelings on the matter so well and crystallize it further by explaining it wonderfully! The realism that infringes upon the idealism of Eren's outlook on the freedom of the sea is one of the most vital thematic points of this season, and that final scene's significance is what you present so well here. It really was a false horizon, what a fitting way of putting it, well done!
    Armin's idealism, represented by the sea, that expanse, that horizon evoking hope and peace, is salvaged for him by his survival. Eren, however, with the memories of his father coursing through his mind after the discovery of the contents of the basement, erode his own hope in what the symbol of the sea represented. I think a scene you very easily could have included in this video to help bolster your point is during the final episode, when Eren is trying to console Armin about him being chosen to survive after Floch's criticism (before the ceremony), and as he tries to argue that they will now get to go to the ocean....a flashback of Faye, Grisha's sister (his aunt!), torn apart by the dogs in Marley....makes him pause, horror-struck at the epiphany that the very ideal they clung to, reaching that sea to be free, is a fallacy. The fact that Armin was not at the basement reveal actually adds to that point as well, his hope is maintained, but Eren's ideal has been compromised. Of course, this is because, as that final scene shows, beyond the sea are enemies....and to truly be free, to end the cycle that has been perpetuated for 2,000 years, it needs to be continued one more time, and resolved by the very horrors of war that feed the suffering of this world steeped in pessimism, violence, warfare, segregation and despair. From here, we hit a milestone of the narrative as a whole, a structural end to the Paradis reality, and the story sets up the dive into a wider, far more morally, ethically, and socially complex world and tale. As a springboard to this, what you describe in the video is a truly effective thematic point that resonates what is to come, and I'm so glad you touched on that so damn well!
    Magnificent video as usual, I'm very happy you did one about AoT, it's genuinely probably my favorite ongoing anime story right now (and the manga has been absolutely incredible from Marley onwards, the recent developments have just gotten better and better narratively, chapter 122 was crazy! The conclusion of the story will be a big factor in deciding how great AoT truly ends up being, though, as expected, and we are definitely getting closer). If the anime continues to produce an adaptation like this, with this last season literally surpassing the source material in so many ways, what comes next in AoT, this final season, has the potential to genuinely be one of the very best animes I've ever seen, it's already up there after S3 Part 2, but the Marley arc is truly exceptional, and I hope they really can continue this impeccable, in fact transcendent, adaptation.
    Brilliant job, I would love to see more on AoT, I'm glad we continue to share interests in similar stories/works of art and analyze them in very similar ways!

      Thanks as always for sharing your extensive thoughts on the topic mate! Definitely super glad that you enjoyed. It's such an amazing story, with unrivalled foreshadowing and plotting, and a mythos that just deepens, recontextualizes and expands upon itself with each new manga revelation. I totally agree, if S4 adapts Marley well then it'll become a top 10 anime for me without a doubt (it's already top 15, mind..), and that's at the very least. As for more AoT content - I'd definitely love to do more but most of the topics I'd be interested in occur during Marley and on, so it'll probably have to wait until S4 is animated (assuming I'm still making videos by then, lol)

Then two seasons later, with the world being given a chance to breathe, and the characters to develop, while simultaneously pushing the plot forward in crazy ways, I won't deny, I didn't cry, but I got fucking emotional in this ending scene. Coupled with the beautiful visuals, contrasting with Eren's VA superb line delivery, and the emotional score, this was easily one of the most bittersweet scenes I've ever watched in an anime.

Especially in the world of attack on titan where it is extremely cutthroat brutal and even borderline nihilistic in how people are discarded for the sake of a supposed greater good. I'm not really a huge fan of the series and I never caught on to it but this show definitely has its character growth and although Eren has become a person that he had initially despised at the beginning due to his black and white morality he matures and steels himself to do evil to counteract evil in the same way that the royalist tried to do when they sent hundreds of thousands of civilians to go fight the titans in an attempt to thin the population. He knows that he isn't a good person and that he'll most likely suffer some serious backlash and hatred for what hes done but it's what the world needs in order for him to save it.

    Attack on Titan Season 2 got me genuinely enjoying the series and Season 3 Part 2 made me consider it one of the greatest anime of all time. As Aleczandxr has covered in his video Isayama is impeccable at making such a masterfully crafted and intricate story, effective at symbolism (as seen by the sea example) as well as using that symbolism to help mark character development (as seen by how the sea has changed in meaning for Eren). I definitely look forward to the next season of Attack on Titan, it will be one hell of a wild ride.

    Yep, even across the sea is just more fighting. First the dream was just to kill all the titans and it would be over, the titans would be gone and everyone would be free and appreciate this new world but no, there was more to it. Less terrifying but so much more complex to solve. Personally when i watched it, i just considered it the next problem, something to solve after the titan crisis and after that it would be over instead of now but it makes that it meant more to them. I think they will eventually have to find a way to rid all Eldians of the curse in order to let the Marleyans trust them

    Vinland saga which is by the same studio is pretty good. This is coming from a manga reader who read far ahead. I think it is something that you will enjoy because I know you like shows that discuss different outlooks on life. The show really invites you to think about what causes violence and war and ways to live. I have spent a lot of time thinking a learning about Nordic mythology. The idea of Valhalla is scary in how it created a society of fighters and conquerors. This season is just the prologue to a much bigger story. The farmland and Baltic war arcs really pay off what this arc. The evolution of Thorfinn is great. I can’t wait for a video on it.

    I think after realizing the false finish line - it's a matter of compromise and finding that balance between realism and hope.
    Because let's face it, Eren now in the newest chapter is both right on protecting his own people rather than sacrificing them and immensely wrong in wanting to destroy the world. He's the one who values freedom, but he's ironically chained to his own idealized freedom which he becomes a slave to.
    While Armin (with the rest of Survey Corps) understand the depth of hate and trouble dealing with the world that just want them gone out of fear and hatred, but they know nothing will be worthwhile when you pay them with the blood of the thousands and Armin (in Ch. 131) still believes there is something out there, something good, which give him the ability to see this through.

I saw your twitter post about the 139 ending 5 months back ago and I absolutely agree with you. I personally liked chapter 139.5. The hope and hopelessness in 139 and 139.5 reminds me a lot of "girl's last tour" ending. The best I can describe the ending is that it's both idealistic and realistic. Do you like 139.5 too? [spoilers] it's sad how all of this lead to a shallow ending, where genocide is supposed to be some kind of heroic act by eren, and violence simply a tool towards peace, but everything up to the ocean scene will be perfection in my eye, even if the things afterwards completely dropped the ball and exposed the author's muddled (and at places "yikes") understanding of power, politics and freedom

    • @beastvicious8672

      Season 1 was far more than that. I never understood how people could percieve season 1 as just "superficial action". Guess too many are just incecure about not being seen in the "normie" crowd, as AoT got that stigma becouse of it's huge amount of popularity. So many people care too much about the surroundings of AoT (it's fanbase), that they no longer see the show for what it is. Really is a shame for something so well written as AoT. And yes, that goes for season 1 as well.

    • @muffy6519
      @muffy6519 4 года назад

      @@beastvicious8672 I never said season 1 was bad. It may have been hype fodder, but it was, and still is, one of the most hype shows I've seen. But saying it's "far more than that" seems faulty to me, because my biggest gripe was my most important aspect, and that's character.
      By the end of the first episode Eren was a Titan killing machine. Nearly all the scenes with him circled back to killing Titans in some way and that was the only thing that was ever "explored" at the time.
      Mikasa had 1 and a half aspects to her character, she loves Eren, and she's really good at killing titan. We get a reason why she loves Eren but I felt we didn't get enough of her own reasoning why it was so important. The reason why she was so good at killing Titans hadn't been explained yet either which is fine but could've been more interesting.
      Armin was the best character, actually showing progression throughout the season.
      And, at the time, most of the side character could be explained in a sentence or even less sometimes. The best exception being Jean.
      I want to emphasize that, while at the time I saw them all as mostly flat characters for the vague Titans to chew through, the action and hints of intrigue kept me watching. Having finished season 3 I'm so happy it was like this, having gotten a LOT of development for Eren and Armin, with a hint of what makes Mikasa AND Levi so special, showing there's a narrative reasoning to it. Nearly every surviving side character got great development, though I wish we got some for Connie, which I don't doubt will come soon.
      The fact that you reject people's opinions with something as weak as "not wanting to go against the norm" and "being insecure" is not only dismissive of the opposing argument, but also extremely insulting.
      Especially given that your current argument for it being special is because it was.
      If you disagree with me, that's fine. Every person is entitled to their own opinion. But going out of your way to insult someone else's opinion and character as you did is not afforded to you.
      If you wish to argue, feel free to give me your argument and/or counterpoints and I can assure you that I, for one, will not dismiss it and give it the full acknowledgement it deserves.

      @beastvicious8672 4 года назад

      Alright. I'll give a proper response tomorrow when i have time, going more in detail. It wasn't a personal insult. I've just seen so many jump on the "AoT hype" bandwagon, dissmissing what season 1 was about. Echoing people like Gigguk, regarding it as an "action spectacle". Which is a very superficial describtion, of what went down in season 1. I could see that describtion for Gurren Lagann and One Piece. But AoT isn't simply about showing off for shits and giggles. I never understood that sentiment for the show.

    • @muffy6519
      @muffy6519 4 года назад

      @@beastvicious8672 I understand that it wasn't a personal insult, it's just that I find it presumptuous that you seem to think you know why I have my opinion workout asking. I do watch Gigguk and other such critics, but I still form my own conclusions.
      Also, of you think Gurren Lagann is just an action spectacle, you need to rewatch it. It does have amazing active, but there's a lot more to it then that!
