Katy Perry Hero Award Acceptance Speech at Trevor Live

- Katy Perry was presented with the Trevor Hero Award at Trevor Live on December 2, 2012 at the Hollywood Palladium.
As an ally for the LGBTQ community, Katy has supported equality and the freedom to marry. Through her video "Firework," she inspires LGBT youth to find their spark, and in all things, Katy strives to let young people know they have value, and by being themselves, they can be anything.
Katy has been involved with The Trevor Project for two years. She has dedicated songs and performances to LGBT youth in crisis, and inspires LGBT youth to be proud of who they are. Most recently, Katy spent Transgender Day of Remembrance with Trevor staff and volunteers to learn more about the unique challenges faced by transgender and gender non-conforming youth. It's not only what she has done to inspire and empower, but her commitment to being a better, stronger ally for LGBT youth that makes Katy Perry a Trevor Hero.

Everyone has value; Everyone deserves respect; and Everyone deserves the chance to live their dream, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. I feel so blessed to have been here this night! Was incredible . Being a proud young gay from Australia it was my dream to meet Katy Perry. I got more than that. I was her server at her table and she was just as I imagined . Very sweet. She even posed with some fans including myself after it ended. Her speech was clearly amazing. Great night Trevor Project. katy is my idol and i love her and look up to her so much. i am a lesbian myself and a very big supporter of gay rights and i have been for a long time.
when i was 9-10 i started learning a lot about homosexuality and gay rights and i ended up getting very passionate about supporting lgbt rights.
at the same time that was happening i discovered ur so gay which actually started my love for katy. i have met her and she is the kindest, funniest, and most sincere person i have ever met.

yo i came here from tumblr after a gif claimed katy said "gays are so fun who else will i got shopping with and talk about boys" but i can't find this quote anywhere within this video which actually comes off as a genuinely thoughtful speech revealing her contuining process of learning and educating herself about LGBTQ people. sad that people have to fake a quote to make the world seem worse than it is.

I don't get why people are dissing her for making LGBT youth more accepted. You don't know her, I believe that she is doing it because she truly believes in it and she believes in people. I'm a pretty big fan of hers and I know that Katy doesn't just do things for shits and giggles and publicity.

Also your so gay wasnt meant to be an insult. She said in an interview that it was very specific to her life and she just thought that her boyfriend would be happier as a gay man. That's all she was saying. People can take it for whatever reason they want, but i think shes a great person and I've met her before and I'm really happy she won this award

CLEARLY Katy deserves this award. This comes from a non-biased point of view, even though I love her to death. If you think she doesn't deserve this because of 'Ur So Gay' you're horribly mistaken. You clearly have no idea what the song is ACTUALLY communicating. It's NOT a diss to gays. It's simply a song about her boyfriend who seemed gay, but wasn't. It was a humorous song, not a diss to gays. IN FACT, Katy has a lot of gays working with her on tour.
"Ally" can be both a verd and a noun depending on context. Just saying ;)

I do certainly agree that labels are important and that "colour-blindness" is covert racism, however I do hope that there will be a time in the faaaaar future where privilege will be dismantled and labels will no longer be important. Labels will never be a bad thing, but as so many people don't fit into labels no matter how many more we create, this is my hope. I'm not saying this in defense of Perry as I am not a fan of hers - this is just my thoughts on labels.

If it wasnt for her, I would have committed suicide. So, I wouldn't say that. I've been a fan of hers ever since 2008 and I met her last year. She's an amazing person and those lyrics is simply her sense of humor.
So somebody was uneducated about gay sensitive and issues, then understood that she was wrong, changed, educated herself and became and ally... and all people can think about is how before being educated about it she WASN'T an ally.
You'd think gay people would appreciate someone who changed their views when a lot of the time we hope for the part of the world that hates or doesn't understand us to do just that.

Sure maybe her lyrics were IGNORANT but she was just coming onto the scene after being brainwashed into christianity. I think she's come a long way and you should at least take it from her point of view.
I'll be fair, it is totally possible to change your views. HOWEVER, she can not be called an "ally" until she has completely apologized for her earlier views of gays as punchlines. Saying "OMG, I didn't mean THAT kind of gay" is not an apology. Saying "I'm sorry, I was wrong" is.
Its time to empower the Asylum statuses of countries to help LGBTs to shift into liberal countries.

UM no I'm a lesbian. If people get butt hurt over song lyrics, that's their problem. You're looking at those lyrics in a close minded point of view. Many of my other gay friends think the song is funny, if you think its offensive than that is soley your problem.
