Love Zwift, but I hate the companion app. I just can't understand why someone would think it a good idea to create a UI that forces people to have two devices open at the same time.
The coolest feature I recently figured out was that if you are in map mode in the companion app, if you double tap the arrow icon, it will give kudos to the riders around you in a certain radius.
I quite like using the "clean view" option to clear the clutter off the screen & then just use ZCA as a head unit as I would when riding outdoors. It reduces some of the artificial feel of Zwift especially if using a large screen close to the bike. It also seems more respectful to the graphics designer who spent hundreds of hours building the worlds which whilst not as realistic as other platforms are more flexible (e.g. u-turns & detours) & so more fun due to their efforts.
My favorite hack is to pick longer routes that have the particular segments I want in order, even if I'm not going to ride the whole thing. I've found that the first half of Four Horsemen gives a 2, 7 and 21 minute climb in order in the first hour. Likewise, Uberpretzel packs a lot of early climbing in during the first hour followed by plenty of flat if you want to have an hour of climbing followed by an hour of zone 2. Pick the route that suits and stop when you've completed the parts you want.
I wish there was a way to tag fellow zwifter during the ride. Like if you were doing the Watopia volcano circuit and wanted to try and lap your friend. Would be great to tag them to be able to know where this tagged rider is on the map so you can give the right chase effort.
I wonder if they have a world that is only rideable for half the year at best, has a lots of potholes, angry hillbillies in pickup trucks, and shit all for cafe stops.
I think you can arrange a meet up in any world regardless of the schedule and you remain in it even if you leave the meet up. I learnt this on a Shane Miller 5min hack some weeks back.
We need some augmented reality apps for real world cycling, so you can ride your bike and see interesting things overlayed on your AR glasses. Game features like power ups and pokemon, or useful data like a GPS map and progress, Strava competitor tracks to race against, dangers like potholes that the community has marked on a map.
Yikes! That's a list of everything I hate about Zwift. the less clutter teh better. I also reduced the resolution to minimum as it's _more_ realistic, as human vision prioritizes the center of the field-of-view: having massive details in the periphery is superfluous. Each to their own, I guess!
A few days ago I was caught out by a rain shower, got drenched, then skidded and fell off my bike coming down a hill. I bet you can't do that on Zwift!
Thank you Manon, very informative. I'm one of those ones stuck on free riding with the same equipment, I really need to try more event types and customise accordingly!
What I don't understand about the Companion app is: why can't we search for events? Say there's a club ride coming up in a few days, how to know? There doesn't seem to be a way to see that, you'd have to rely on club emails. Or am I missing something?
15 €/month. I really would prefer a feature reduced version for half the price. For me the features (gamification, xp, digital clothing, ...) are not worth the money.
To be honest, I’m never able to understand how I can join my current Zwift session in the companion app. I wish there was a button that said “You’re currently in a session, would you like to join that with the Companion app?”
It should take you into the GAME view for your live Zwift session automatically when you open ZCA as long as you are on the same wifi network on both devices. So check this before you start your ride on Zwift & open ZCA. Sometimes you might lose GAME view on ZCA during a ride if wifi signals are lost and so one device has to rejoin a (different) network or switches to a 3/4G network on phone for example so some advise putting your phone into airplane mode to prevent this.
As a father, the correct sock height is the maximum, and only wearing white socks. If they would let me show sandals instead of shoes, the Dad Look would be complete!
Is zwift worth it for a brand new cyclist? I already spent some money in my bike and the zwift trainer stand plus subscription seems a bit too much. So far I enjoy ride outside here in Spain, but my focus is to join some real races in about 5 months (still losing weight).
ride outside....waste of money. i tried it hoped on the trend wasted alot of money on new trainer and zwift. after 3 months during pandemic i couldn't deal with riding outside staring at a tv. it fills a gap once in a while when you absolutely cant ride outside but never really enjoyed it.
If you are enjoying riding outdoors then by all means you should keep doing that. Join a local club to find rides and people to ride with and work on bike skills you will need in the real world. Zwift won't teach you the physics of braking, cornering, etc and unless you have a rocker plate or a fancy trainer you won't enjoy time out of the saddle very much. However, when weather turns unfavorable or you should find yourself unable or unwilling to ride outside, then you'll appreciate Zwift most.
It entirely depends...if you like riding outside and enjoy that, then keep at it. Personally I no longer have any desire to road bike outside. I no longer have to deal with traffic, I don't have to carry hours worth of food and water on me, or click clack through the shop looking like a prat if I can't, I don't have to deal with traffic, I can ride jerseyless with my music blasting, did I mention I don't have to deal with traffic? I say this as someone who loathed indoor training and could never manage to ride one longer than 30 mins and would ultimately just fall out of shape during the seasons where the weather sucked. Obviously that won't be the case for everyone, some people will still hate riding while staring at the tv, or have no interest in the racing that zwift offers, or the training you can get from other apps. So know one can really tell you if it's worth it, because it will entirely depend on you. But I would say to be aware that it exists and that if you have the opportunity to give it a try and see how it goes, becuase if it works for you it opens up a whole nother world for your riding.
Indoor training is great for structured workouts. Nothing will beat riding outdoors for sure, but for me I ride indoors majority of the time because priorities take over, kids, wife, work. Training at 430am or 11pm is only the time I really have to ride my bike.
ive never cycled zwift, although i used to run on it from october to feb - end of last year through to this year. often saw cyclists in gcn kits. One of the best things with zwift is that you sometimes get pro athletes on the same course as you. I was able to run with Mo Farah during a 5k event on xmas eve and at least 8 times was able to run with lionel sanders. perhaps i should invest in a smart trainer.
8 things you might not know about Zwift if you have never ridden on Zwift. :-) Good content as usual but choose titles wisely, don't just feed RUclips algorithm.
That could be correct, if Zwift in fact was a game. But it's a trainingplan, a VR, a racesim, a coach, and yes a game. Much more than what you claim it to be :)
It might not be for everyone, but it's certainly good fun for those that want to ride, train and race indoors - it's up to you where you prefer to ride of course!

Probably the smoothest "I sit myself on a bike while talking to the camera" right at the start ... kudos!
Was just thinking the same. And also wondering how many times they had to retake it😀

Just a slight correction on Meetup, you could only invite users that are following you and not users that you are following...
I wonder if they have a world that is only rideable for half the year at best, has a lots of potholes, angry hillbillies in pickup trucks, and shit all for cafe stops.
They don't, but there is a place to find that. It's called 'outside'.

Try riding Zwift on rollers. When you start out there is ample opportunity for a big crash when you follow your cartoon man and lean into the corners.
Were you alright after the crash??
