OK well I did watch your whole 20 videos on this one! So I think I’ve earned the right to a comment.
Riven for me was the first immersive video game (on a computer) I’d ever played, back in ’97. Bizarrely my grandfather had been given a copy (complete with 5 x CDRoms!) back then. It inspired me in so many different ways. I felt aspects actually reflected reality in fact (beyond what is conventionally known.)
I didn’t have the kind of computer back then needed to play it on so I only got to play it when I visited him. I became a bit obsessed by it.
It was fantastic, and although maps and hints did exist back on early internet back then, there were long gaps where you just had to sleep on it, let the thing to try come to you, and come back and try that later.
You should (if you haven’t by now) go back and at least look at the character videos that were the real actors embedded into the game (all on youtube) as they really made it as good as it was.
Although I love the new stuff that’s been added (you’ll see if you go back and play the original version in maybe a year or whatever) - the real actors playing Gehn, Catherine and Atrus (Rand himself) make it. The CGI of the characters is just not the same.
One thing that was frustrating was watching you run past everything (you really need to take it slowly) and miss a lot of the detail.
Another thing was that you never learnt the number system (the D’Ni one, that Gehn taught the villagers), which does actually make sense - it’s a base 5 system where the symbols rotate around the square and then extra digits added. So if the symbol for ‘2’ is rotated once, it might mean 2 sets of 5 (ie 10) plus whatever other symbol has been added for the single digit.
    I’m sure you’ve seen this by now…dni.fandom.com/wiki/D%27ni_Numerals
I hope you go back and play the original one day, it’s actually harder!! And has different aspects to it. You do actually have to make handwritten notes etc.
But even with the still shots for the different directions - it’s still amazing.
Also - at one point you talked about searching for similar games (solo adventurer explore games I guess) - similar to this. I don’t really think there are any out there truly like this. Nothing as good as Riven, in my opinion, although people have tried.
Also - Cyan made a game after Obduction called Firmament which is good, but frustrating, and nothing like as ‘real’ as Riven. (Plus Riven had Robyn Miller’s music - Rand’s brother.)
Myst IV in my opinion was underrated, I think it’s playable on Steam. Not as good as Riven, again, but still worth playing I think.
    Cheers.

@tegannorthwood1891 Thanks for taking the time to watch, and I do hope it was enjoyable despite me cheating here and there. In my defense, I got some of the numbering system, just not all of it! 😁
Had I given it more time and thought, I am sure I could have puzzled it out eventually, but impatience caught up with me there for sure.
Most of the time with this playthrough when I was really stuck, I was using something like a 'no spoilers gradual hint' steam community guide. Just to keep things moving along.
Fantastic game, and I may go back for the original at some point just to see how it was. I can see why many people liked the original. I'd be interested in checking out Myst as well.
      Thanks again for watching!

@@HawkzzBroadcast yeah just go through it slower lol 🙂
Btw - I meant Myst III Exile - not Myst IV.
Hope you get free of Covid symptoms, I had it around the same time as you made the video, still recovering…! was funny hearing you make the same noises I was, while watching.
