I would say for anything under the custom shop that’s probably true. And then, if you get into the custom shop range, there’s a pretty big price disparity where you’re paying more for not as good of an instrument and certainly not as customized.

Your playing skills certainly enhanced the demonstration, wonderful choice of styles and songs to showcase what must NOT be an inexpensive guitar. One can only dream...

Different brands yes , but still designed by Leo Fender. I bought one of the 1st G&Ls back in the 80s it was a strat style , it played and sounded like a fender
He founded Music Man as well and I just bought another of his designs, the Sabre 2 from '78. The neck on this thing is amazing. Similar to MM EVH which I recently tried.
@@emdblues yes I had a music man sabre 2 and it just so happened it was the one George Terry used on Lay Down Sally. The case was sensiled "Fragile electronic instrument" Eric Clapton Group , I got through my friend who ran Modern Music in Sunrise Fla. His name was Dave Morgan. He got straight from George. All the laquer had be sanded off the back of the neck and it was a fast fret board. I wish I still had that thing.
Sounds killer! Finally, someone who shares my enthusiasm for a triple pickup Tele! 🙌 In mine, I've got a classic in the bridge, tri-sonic style in the middle, and mini humbucker in the neck.
I'm onboard, I put p90s in a Tele with a filtertron in the middle position, wired to have any possible combo of pickups including all three. Great sounds!
Yeah man! I’ve been playing three-pickup Teles off and on for a little over twenty years now! The most stable Strats I’ve ever had were three-pickup Teles! It took a long time for me to learn to appreciate a standard Tele. I kept hoping to find Strat sounds that just weren’t there. So I always added a middle pickup. Eventually I grew up and committed to building a standard Tele style guitar with Warmoth parts and insisted that I would let that Tele be a Tele, and I’m super happy with that guitar. I still rock a Nashville Tele from time to time though. Great vid!
Yes, he played a Tele on the live and studio version, but the opening part that I played was Don Felder on a Les Paul. Joe Walsh comes in after the part that I played with a Tele.
G&L with Seymour Duncan????? 🙂🙂🙂 This is exactly why I play a Fender Telecaster with a Gibson Humbucker...... Simple and perfect instead of complicated and not authentic......
I made a similar tele out of an original American fat telecaster, which already had the humbucker, and added a middle pickup, a Seymour Duncan tapped quarter pounder bridge, which I leave tapped as the standard position, a super switch, and my own wiring tricks, until it was exactly what I wanted. It has been my number one for quite a while now, and has been on the road with me through many gigs. There is nothing more versatile.
The guitar that has never left my side is a Tele with a strat pickup in the middle. However I'm using a freeway 10 way switch (two banks of five). Can do all the strat positions, all the Tele positions plus bridge and middle in series, bridge and neck in series, middle and neck in series and all three in parallel. None of the series sounds are classics but... give a helluva kick and have their uses.
Try a Z-3! It has three Z-coil pickups which are fantastic. Mine has a 6-way switch to get 1-5 strat positions and middle Tele position for bridge and neck. I loved to G&L about 10 years ago and have never looked back. Some don’t like their pickups but I’ve really liked them. I have owned basses and guitars.
I have a Will Ray Signature that has those Z coil pickups. These are a little hotter than the regular pickups in the Comanche. I love my G&L’s. My Will Ray also has a B bender on it with skull inlays for fret markers. Also have a Legacy HD and a Bluesboy. In my opinion some of the finest instruments out there and very overlooked.
That’s my ideal pickup configuration! I have a 2001 G&l ASAT Z-3 with some custom options, but they didn’t have a custom shop then-they WERE a custom shop!
I have an Asat Classic Bluesboy from around 2005.... it is just a KILLER guitar... I put in some Suhr pickups for a bit more traditional tele tones.... plus four way wiring and a pull pot to split the neck humbucker..... I'm a big G&L fan... I'd love to design a custom shop from them.
My favorite tele is an Austin I picked up at a local guitar shop for $169. Its in a beautiful white with the wood sort of coming through the finish. Idk why but she sounds so good and I tend to pick her up more than my Fender.
New subscriber and small town music store owner in Oklahoma. I just picked up the G&L line recently. I'm very impressed with their quality and customer service.
Mason, I've learned a ton from you over the last couple of years. Referencing mostly your videos, I built a super-tidy (you would be proud) mono wet/dry pedalboard that delivers a huge range of the best sounds I've ever attained. I am constantly inspired to try new songs. Your G&L kicks ass and although I can't go for that right now, I can't wait to try the songs and sounds you demo'd, with what I've got. I never knew how bad I needed a Univibe fuzz sound.
I have a warmoth build with Frailin P92 humbucker, steel pole strat middle, and Split pole tele bridge. It is a treasure trove of tones!!! Slept on configuration.
Steve Howe of YES has had a custom Telecaster with a single-coil in the bridge, for that "icepick through the forehead" Tele bite and a humbucker in the neck position for mellow, Jazzy tones. Andy Summers of The Police also played a Tele with a humbucker in the neck. I had an American Fender Telecaster H/S, which had that same pickup configuration plus "5-Way Switching." It was THE MOST VERSATILE GUITAR that I have EVER owned!
We mention Andy Summers and Keith Richards. I think they’re the biggest most commonly associated with the neck humbucker and Tele bridge, however neither used coil splits I don’t think nor had a middle pickup.
Gonna finish paying off my fullerton deluxe doheny (jazzmaster style) in lake placid blue literally tomorrow, should be here next week this time. So stoked on G&L at the moment. I had been wanting a music man for a few years, but the cost was prohibitive and I finally remembered g&l. I wished I could afford to get a quartersawn neck and a matching headstock, so maybe next time and that practically takes it up to music man costs anyways, but just a little cheaper. Cheers Mason! p.s. i've become obsessed with g&l for the past few months, i hawk their online store for b-stock stuff now and watch all their youtube videos
The perfect guitar! Thank you for posting the specs. I had to sell my ASAT classic several years back. Biggest regret of my life. I’m going to have to get one built like this.
So for the bridge pickup sounds when playing stairway and hotel California. To get that older les Paul type sound That’s just the bridge pickup alone to have that sound or was it expanded combined with another pickup?
Dang it! Although I do have a G&L Fullerton ASAT Bluesboy already (and I love it very much!) I now have a "Super Tele/ASAT" like yours in my bucket list (customized to my own specs of course). Your guitar is pure fire! So versatile!
It just needs the neck-on mod for the neck and bridge pickup combination. It would be nice if the tone knob had a push/pull as well to activate the neck-on mod.
Hell, yeah! Glad to see you're on the G&L train with me! MFD pickups are the best. Not only are the USA and Custom shop ones incredible, there's no better value than the Tribute line.
Killer guitar Mason. Great noodling around too...I'm a proud original owner of a 1999 black guard asat classic semi-hollow, a fantastic custom shop quality build. Super chunky V-neck with gun-oil vintage tint, & magnetic field single coils summoning all the classic tele and 59 LP sounds. G&L ARE the "REAL ONES" for sure...
I custom ordered an ASAT Blues Boy from Rudy’s in Manhattan (back when they were on 48th Street) and yes, it was pretty great but the fret work was surprisingly pretty bad (I’ve seen better fret work on $300 Asian imports) - a little heavier than I expected but after I got a fret job, it was a pretty great guitar. Loved the 7/8 body size and brass slotted bridge barrels.
I love G&Ls. My only issue is the unique neck pocket. If you need a new neck (which I did for my G&L) you have to get it through G&L, no one makes aftermarket necks for them.
I absolutely LOVE my G&L. I dont have much experience with them, and have never had the pleasure of trying the USA made ones, but my G&L Tribute S-500 is amazing. I would love to be able to own a USA model one day. I own a Player Series Tele and even though i prefer a Tele over a Strat, the G&L surpasses the quality of the MIM Tele by a long shot and the G&L is 200 bucks cheaper. Mason, have u messed with the pole heights on the MFD pickup yet? Its surprising how much of a tonal difference it can make. I had my G&L for almost 2 years and never messed with the poles until about a month ago. I just love how u can fine tune the pickup to your liking. Such a cool idea. I really want to replace my Player Series Tele with an ASAT. Cant afford a custom, but even the Tribute ASAT would be nice.
I love my ASAT classic, but I've also thought for several years that it would be awesome to make a Super tele out of one, just like this! What a great guitar! It has everything you need, and sounds incredible.
You are an amazing salesperson ! Great playing and examples . One note.....an oversight maybe .... on my own set ups I DEFINITELY prefer the grub screws on the bridge saddles to all be adjusted BELOW or FLUSH with the surface of the saddle so that they do not dig into my picking hand ......see 1min34sec.... some of them seem to be sticking up a bit .......anyway , great tones . Thanks
My main guitar is a tele with strat neck and middle pickups and a 10 position freeway switch. Does that guitar have a treble bleed and if so do you know the values?
Excellent demo & playing! I have a custom built Suhr T/S style guitar built about 16 years ago that is excellent! Did not know that G&L has s custom shop. Also didn’t know they cost well over $3,000. Thanks!
I've owned both a (Tribute) Bluesboy and both the MFD and alnico ASAT Classic S. This guitar is a happy marriage between the Bluesboy and the MFD Classic S.
I have a Strat and a LP. Almost all the music I want to play is covered by one of these. I love the Strat sound but I find it so much harder to play than the LP; my hand and forearm get fatigued much, much faster. The Strat is a USA Deluxe from a decade ago (us10088164). The LP is a '96 Standard. Is there a guitar out there where I can get that Strat sound but with a neck that is more like the LP experience? I don't know what it is that makes playing the LP feel different (scale length?). This channel is excellent at explaining the science of tone so I'm hoping you can answer.
G&Ls are the best. You have a real beauty on your hands! I have two ASATs, a chambered Bluesboy w/o F holes and a Seth Lover humbucker and my other ASAT with two soapbar pickups. Thanks for the video.
Great video, player, and guitar. Thanks for showing us what the guitar can do. I have a Fender Am P2, Fender Tele in HSS, and recently got a G&L Tele (ASAT classic tribute). After a good set up, I find myself play the G&L a lot more than the other two. The MFDs can put out great tones. The grunge and bite you get is inspiring but still nice to play jazz stuff with the neck. G&Ls make really great guitars.
I am currently building your next favorite Tele. Keep an eye on GT handmade guitars on E-Bay. There's a couple on there now, but this one will be there soon.
It almost looks like your hair is blowing in the wind when you play the Hotel California solo, and whether or not that's intentional, it works. I didn't realize you were so good at playing guitar, seriously +1
Love G&Ls, the s500 is one of my fav guitars ever. I am a tele woman though, and this configuration is the best for me. The SC2 is amazing too. The MFD pickups still retain some of the regular single coil sound, but beefier and with much less hum. Sometimes I prefer them against the alnico singles. Such a pretty guitar, thanks a lot for sharing :D
@@Lalairu my G&L that I moded is a 2011 Legacy. I also have a 1982 S-500 from the first week of production. It has the original body shape so it is slightly offset. The Skyhawk has that body now. The S-500 does have the big square MFD pickups however. Those two guitars each have unique sounds and sound different from traditional strat single coils.
@@douglasaxtell oh my that s500 must sound amazing. So it doesn't have the regular single mfds but the big ones? I didn't know that model. Maybe its something like an SC3?
HOLY... Every position absolute gold! Sheesh, I was already completely stuck which Fender Tele model to get and now this... This might just get me past my itch for a wide-range HB neck... or a thinline.😮
@@VertexEffectsInc Aaaany chance you'd give the pot and cap values? You pushed me over the edge - doesn't take much :-) and I grabbed a mint used tribute bb thinline. Has SD antiquity bridge and neck but I'm switching to a Seth and putting a Lollar 64 strat in the middle all just so I'm not ripping you off too shamelessly :-D
@@VertexEffectsInc Thanks loads! And just picked up a 70s reissue Fender Tele Deluxe, so thinline, wide-range and your super-beast tele for the hat trick!
So beautiful... I have the import model of the asat tribute... I think p90s style called mft pickups... idk, point is that the quality is seriously there... feels so solid... I can only imagine how good their custom shop stuff is😮😮😮
Nice Tele...great pickups & cleverly wired...that G&L Tele asat style pickup is really good...i like their bass pickups to...they done a really good job...it is a Tele on steroids...yep,Jimmy used a Tele on 'Stairway to Heaven'...argued with Gibsonites about this yrs ago..lol..they aged it just right...very nice...enjoy 🎸

I love my ASAT classic, but I've also thought for several years that it would be awesome to make a Super tele out of one, just like this! What a great guitar! It has everything you need, and sounds incredible.
Now's the time for your Super Tele!
@@VertexEffectsInc maybe someday!
You are an amazing salesperson ! Great playing and examples . One note.....an oversight maybe ....
on my own set ups I DEFINITELY prefer the grub screws on the bridge saddles to all be adjusted BELOW
or FLUSH with the surface of the saddle so that they do not dig into my picking hand ......see 1min34sec....
some of them seem to be sticking up a bit .......anyway , great tones . Thanks
I've not had an issue unless they're above the bridge flange. In 25 years of playing Telecaster I've never had this issue or even considered it.
That is my dream pickup configuration!
Yes, indeed!
My main guitar is a tele with strat neck and middle pickups and a 10 position freeway switch. Does that guitar have a treble bleed and if so do you know the values?
Yes it does, don’t remember the value. It also has 500K pots by my request.
Very cool guitar! Hmm . . . maybe with a B-bender?
Thought about doing the palm bender but I don’t think I’d use it much
Own 3 G&L's.......2 of them are Asat Specials and 1 Legacy. Great guitars!!!
Heck yea!
Excellent demo & playing! I have a custom built Suhr T/S style guitar built about 16 years ago that is excellent! Did not know that G&L has s custom shop. Also didn’t know they cost well over $3,000. Thanks!
They’re wonderful instrument and can be had for the $3000-3500 range. That’s about $1500-$2000 less than the equally equipped Fender.
I've owned both a (Tribute) Bluesboy and both the MFD and alnico ASAT Classic S. This guitar is a happy marriage between the Bluesboy and the MFD Classic S.
Heck yea!
LOVE G&L's. Question: what guage strings are you using?
These are D’Addario XS 9’s
I've never seen a telecasterbridge like this, with 6 individual brass saddles? Is it a G&L only? And can it be bough seperate?
G&L custom
Are there any wiring diagrams for this config? with the push pull?
Ask G&L? I'm sure they're out there.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome, I love G&L, Leo would be proud, cpngrats
Thanks!
Great video!!
🙏🙏🙏
Great guitar! I’m trying to imagine how it would look and sound like with a Bigsby.
I'm sure it could be cool, as an alternative you could go with a Palm Bender?
Palm Bender?

@@VertexEffectsInc Thanks. I'll add it to the list of things I probably don't need but desperately want.
I am currently building your next favorite Tele. Keep an eye on GT handmade guitars on E-Bay. There's a couple on there now, but this one will be there soon.
Nice!
Damn. That is one hell of guitar. G&L here I come... 😊
It almost looks like your hair is blowing in the wind when you play the Hotel California solo, and whether or not that's intentional, it works. I didn't realize you were so good at playing guitar, seriously +1
I think my AC was on. Speaker cab is in an iso room so you can’t hear the fan.
What chorus pedal did you use for the summers bits?
Red Seven Lil Wave
They should just make that a custom shop option and I’d just buy it. That is the dream axe for me.
They should, maybe they will!? In the meantime you can order the same guitar, I put the specs in the description and pinned comment at the top!
G&L has the proper pedigree, no doubt. Compliments!
Thanks for watching!!!
I put MFD pickups in my HSS Legacy. I probably have the only HMM Legacy 😮
@@douglasaxtell I would love to have an s500 with a humbucker in the bridge 🤣 you made a very nice mod!
This guitar and amp combination covers a lot of ground. Sounds great man!
Heck yeah! They did a great job!
Now that is a Super Tele! I know I'm in the minority but I also prefer a 6 saddle bridge plate. Intonation is a beautiful thing.
Stays in tune and intonates beautifully!
amazing instrument and sounds!!
Heck yea!
HOLY... Every position absolute gold! Sheesh, I was already completely stuck which Fender Tele model to get and now this...
This might just get me past my itch for a wide-range HB neck... or a thinline.😮
They’re amazing guitars especially for the price!
@@roughcutguitars I did 500K on the pots
@@VertexEffectsInc Thanks loads! And just picked up a 70s reissue Fender Tele Deluxe, so thinline, wide-range and your super-beast tele for the hat trick!
So beautiful... I have the import model of the asat tribute... I think p90s style called mft pickups... idk, point is that the quality is seriously there... feels so solid... I can only imagine how good their custom shop stuff is😮😮😮
Great instruments!
What a beautiful guitar! All the sounds were great. Highly jealous hahahaha
Thanks Sandra!
I ordered a custom guitar with very similar specs inspired by this video.
Gl in my opinion makes great amazing guitars !!I love them 2 don't get me wrong!!🌻
I'm a sucker for versatility and T-style guitars. This pickup configuration is incredible!! I'm jealous.
You could wire this way on an existing Tele
@@VertexEffectsInc I am very tempted to do this but I would have get creative with my Modern Player Plus tele (HSS configuration).
in my experience G&L guitars tend to be heavy and the necks are not good (too small)
I love it but i have already have a stratocaster, i don’t need it a second one
On their website, they don’t offer roasted figured maple necks… but yours certainly looks roasted… was that something they did special for you?
They offer it on the custom shop. I see it on my order form. I would suggest reaching out to their Custom Shop.
What action did you go for? I have pref for like action. Interested to see what you got on bass and treble at 12th fret. 🎸👌🇬🇧💥📺
Typically medium, I try not to go too low as I like to have a little something to get under. I've not measured it.
Well that a very versatile Tele, as a Tele head. that would make an ideal single guitar! Having more than one guitar is still better though ;)
It's a great guitar. If you need a one and done solution to take to a gig, this is it!
G and L asat classic(blond) is my best guitar, do my own fret work because I do wear them down, the best tele, leo fender said so.
They're great, absolutely!
Yes! I love it , the Super TELE !!!
We need more Super Teles!
G&Ls are sooooo good!
Agreed!
