  • When I saw the boarding ring for the first time at a chandlery in Cherbourg, I knew I had to get my hands on them and give them a try.
Could those goofy looking glasses really be the “miracle cure” against seasickness? I had to find out…
So ladies and gentlemen, after months of trying them out in various conditions onboard Polar Seal, here is how the seasickness glasses worked for me…
And if in spite of everything, you still want to order your pair, here is where to do so! (Definitely not a sponsored link)

Hey R&S. Can you talk about the other things you take/use for seasickness? The wrist bands worked well for me back when I did the Amalfi Coast a few years back on a cat, but a review of what else is available (pills, patches, Ondansetron, etc) would be great. Thanks! Hope Iowa is treating you well.

    Hi Sophie & Ryan,
Great video quality over here !
The liquid of your glasses looks red, which is surprising as we only sell glasses with blue liquid inside. Not the main concern though.
The best way to improve your experience with the Boarding Glasses would be to move them a little bit further toward your nose tip. This would make sure your eyes detect the move of the (blue) liquid in the side rings. In some instances, some adjustments need to be done, which seems the case here, according to some parts of your video. Feel free to reach out if any question, have a safe trip !

After sailing 100s of miles with someone with a similar condition as you have, we stumbled upon the cure. When there is ANY risk of sea sickness, you cannot go below. EVER. Use a bucket if you have to go. Stay out of the cabin... period. NO, you can't go below even for a minute. NO making meals below (eat MREs enroute). Sleep in the cockpit if you must. You should be looking at your next boat being a center cockpit.

Scopolamine is the only thing that has ever worked for me. BUT, here is the key, if you use "the patch" remember it takes HOURS to get that product into your system, so....put it on the night before, it's good for three days. How do you know if it is working? If you have "dry mouth"; if you wake up in the morning with serious dry mouth--it is working.

No too suprizing they don't work for sea sickness since they were design for travel (car) sickness, which is very a very different problem.
For sea sickness the problem is that the (apparent) horizon is moving while our brain thinks it should not. For car thickness, the problem is that your inner ear detects mouvement while the eyes don't give any clue about mouvement if you're reading. So the solution for car sickness is to give back to the eye the same mouvement clues thanks to the little tubes half-filled with liquid.
So, for car travel, those glasses actually work : ruclips.net/video/HZlD_g8GXms/видео.html

Hey François ! Actuallly, the cause of motion sickness is the same in cars and boats (or any vehicle) : it is called kinetosis and results from a mismatch between your vestibular system and your peripheral vision. Even if the motion is quite different on the road and at sea, the solution is to re-synchronize the eyes with the inner ears. And a liquid moving in the peripheral vision is the best way to achieve this because the inner ears also get their perception of inertia from a moving liquid :)

Here's a breathing exercise for you to try. Next time under way , as the boat rises to the top of the crest inhale and fill your lungs. As the boat comes down the crest exhale and breath normally. When it rises to the next crest take a deep breath. As long as your lungs are full you won't feel that nausea or that funny feeling in your gut. It will relax you and think of it as Boat Yoga. Be safe.

There are two factors at play when it comes to sea sickness. Psychological and physiological. Psychological is the biggest problem. Anxiety being a big cause. The more sailing you do in the most austere conditions, your sailing anxiety will decrease. Likewise, if you convince yourself you are going to be sick, you will be sick. Remove that negative cognitive link. With regards to the physiological medication can help. Try eating ginger and put one of the small disposable earplugs in just one ear.

The best thing you can do when seasickness is coming on is take three fast shots of rum. It’ll speed up the puking, and then you’ll feel a little strange which will take your mind of the sick feeling.

You need to learn to manage your seasickness, by managing the 4 Fs: Froid: Make sure you don't get cold by wearing proper clothing. Faim. keep your stomach full, but not too full, with proper food (plain pasta for instance) rather than shit food. Fatigue: Prepare your trip by being well rested before the trip (and that means a few days before, not just the night before) . Frousse: (and I think this is where you fail...): if you are scared, or even worried about seasickness, you will get sea sick... so you need to work on that, trying to convince yourself that you will not be seasick... so am sure you have heard "it's all in your head"... well that part is... Once you start feeling bad, the only cure is to sleep under a tree. That being said, I always have a small bottle of coke (coca-cola). Get rid of the gas by shaking it, and slowly sip some... very slowly, like a medicine. The liquid will stabilise your stomach content. Not sure why or how, but after all, Coca Cola was created as a medicine and it works... it does not work with pepsi for some reason...

My wife and I are planning to do pretty much the exact same thing you and Ryan have done. Maybe a slightly bigger boat for us, but same idea. Is seasickness something that you think could eventually convince you to not like sailing, or is it manageable enough that the great days outweigh the rough seas?

    • @chrysM34
      @chrysM34 5 лет назад

Seasick is something that when started you want to quit the boat right now. It’s very strange how hard it can be , specially on the psychological part.
If you are planning to buy a boat for a long time I will suggest you and your wife/husband rent one for a week and go for sailing the full week. If you have heavy seasickness then have a discuss with your medical doctor. Be aware that some people are really very sensitive and can’t even sail.

@@chrysM34 Thanks for the advice :) As for my part (husband), I was on submarines in the navy many moons ago and dealt with 40-60ft seas coming into Bergen Norway one time. Of the 140-ish people on the boat, two of us didn't get sick. I was one of them. I had advantages like not being on watch so I could go to the lowest deck on centerline and ride it out, but it was still really awful and crazy. Subs don't have traditional keels, just water ballast in a big steel tube with very little to balance out side-to-side motion. Since then, I've gone on about a half dozen sailing and offshore trips and haven't had a problem. My wife is totally new to this whole thing though and we're looking to charter some medium size sailboats for the next few months along with taking the ASA classes, then re-evaluate and make the Big Decision. :)

@@ecliptix5436 I would suggest perhaps getting yourself a smaller coastal cruiser, and seeing how you like traveling in the slow lane... w/sea sickness or without. It will make you a much better sailor than just taking courses and then plunging into a big sea boat. Remember, the smaller the boat, the larger the adventure. Even lakes can be challenging and a lot of fun. IMHO, Lots of submariners seem to find their way to sailboats. Best of luck, swab.

over here in the US there is a program called Myth Busters. anyway, after rigerous testing they determined that products containing ginger were the most effective agains sea sickness, ie, CDN Dry Ginger Ale and tea with ginger in it. give it a try.
