The sound is of a sequenced MIDI in a piano VST. :) So yeah, even though it is a solo, and maybe "virtually playable", I believe what you hear here is a machine playing.

The moon seems to be rather important to mythology and such in general, and since Lunatic comes from Luna which means moon, it seems reasonable to shove lunatic everywhere. ...I'm pretty darn sure there's another reason, but I'm too lazy to do any research. Nice piano arrange, by the way; I don't like Lunatic Princess too much (listened to it too much), but this is quite good.

Nope, never, most likely! Touhou has never been associated with Smash or Nintendo, though maybe you were playing with someone who somehow imported their own music into Melee? I don't think that was a feature of Melee though, it's probably too old for that. Maybe a soundtrack like Corneria or something equally energetic is what you're thinking of?
