This isn't a glitch. It's an intended legacy feature of the Xbox 360. The 360 came out when CDs and locally downloaded music was much more common. So the 360 had a feature to rip cds and play music off the hdd. And as a bonus from the 360's sound API if you play music through the music player, the game will mute ONLY the music so you can hear your music
Music really adds the mood to things Final Hazard but without music: Feels like the end of the world Final Hazard but without music live and learn: you feel powerful super forms and have hope
but the biolizard's roar is something else which you can't hear what's going on with the music playing, if you hear the roar without the music sounds like a dinosaur-like sound.
Music was always critical in demonstrating intrigue, suspense and just plain emotion in general. The same effects would occur in advertisements, tv shows and movies alike. Good job!
This actually makes me wish there was a mod of this game with no music, but modded to sound good. Could add gritty background sound effects to flesh it out, add a high-tech hum noise to Shadow's shoes (like Hydra from Kirby Air Ride), remove the mech lock-on beeping, etc.. It would be relaxing to put someone's whole playthrough of that in the background I used to practice certain hardcore games like Smash Melee without music. Made me feel extra focused in a locked-in meditative way, like an episode of Samurai Jack. Would be cool to practice speedrunning SA2 speed stages with no music, being locked into the sound effect patterns.
I think this can be done without much difficulty by editing the sound files. The part where Sonic is talking to shadow, the GameCube remake was bugged and the lines play over each other, unlike the original dreamcast version that lets everyone properly finish their lines. Sonic even talks over himself when he says "He must be using the Chaos emeralds to teleport!" He didn't even finish the line before that. There is a mod for this PC version that fixes all the audio bugs.
@@user-pz8eg4ps5eHe meant X as a placeholder. Like playing some specific game without audio to see how in changes the feel. Reminds me of Megaman Legends. I always knew this game had a problem with the timing of dialogue and characters talking over eachother, but 5:28 without music helped me to see that Sonic literally spoke over HIMSELF!
I think it's the same thing with Minecraft. With City Escape, it feels dead because usually theres people and liveliness, but it's just awfully empty without the GUN Robots. WIthout music, it just reminds you of the fact you are actually alone (except for the giant truck with an inexperienced driver)
Ok but spotify and whoever ported this being genius tho??? This basically means that you can play whatever track you're vibing to, but not lose the important audio cues (ring collection, jump and land, enemy deaths, etc), done seamlessly. Bro that is not a glitch, that is an entire feature.
This was super interesting! Hilarious when Sonic runs down the skyscraper and it cuts to him running straight down insanely fast in silence. Made me realize his footsteps don't have sound. Really enjoyed your analysis of everything. I wonder how far into development the music was made, and if game testers played in silence.
This video was really well made, it worked good as a documentary analyzing what the lack of music does to the games and also worked good as a comedic and entertaining video that was easily able to captivate your audience. I hope your channel gains more subscribers.
If you honestly think THIS is scary, you should see some of the gameplay videos I put out for some of the VR games I have on the meta quest; I.e. Dead Hook and HellSweeper VR, (Not to shamelessly promote myself but just to give you a perspective). Because I want to make my experience in VR games feel as realistic as possible, I ALWAYS turn off the music in ALL of the VR games I have because in reality, there’s not gonna be a stereo constantly in a corner of the room if I go in and start murdering enemies. But this didn’t stop me from getting comments on said videos being like “Is the game glitched? Because I’m not hearing any music.” Or “Thank you for showing me how awkward this game feels with no music.” On a completely unrelated note, as I am watching the helicopter scene with no music, it REALLY has the same energy that Plankton has when you take his audio where he sounds like a pipsqueak being thrown out of the Krusty Krab, but you slow it down and turn down the pitch and his line is from a different SpongeBob episode that is taken completely out of context and messed with because they had a random voice clip at their disposal to use for the pipsqueak audio.
Please, you need to show the cutscene accompanying Radical Highway, with Shadow's flashback with Maria without music. Just pure ambience and trauma haha
Geez I never realized how weird sonic games would sound without music playing but it does sound kinda good when it comes to the cutscenes because some scenes are so hard to hear the characters talk with the music blasting over them
I wonder if the last cutscene of last story (so after shadow sacrifices himself) would feel any different without music. While that's my favorite song in this game, I could imagine how dead silence might make it more impactful idk
I really want more of this. This is super intriguing and I think this should be done with more Sonic games, weather through the Spotify trick or other modding means.
Funnily enough, this is pretty much how I experienced Sonic Heroes for the first time because the bootleg DVD I installed the game from had removed most of the character voice lines, almost every single music track and all of the pre-rendered CGI cutscenes.
i wish the video were longer this was v silly and epic also side note i feel like it's gotta be an intentional thing that when spotify is open and actively playing, whatever video game you're playing is gonna do that exact thing of muting their own music, no? r u sure it's a glitch? cause sometimes ya just wanna play a game w all the sound effects but reallyyy wanna jam to ur own music instead
Just goes to show how important music is and when to use it cause that cutscene with Sonic and Shadow worked really well without music, while the Knuckles and Rouge cutscene needed music. They were sound effects in those cutscenes I've never heard before because the music is loud you can't hear them. Very interesting.
Imagine King Boom Boo with this shit I didn't even play the game until recently, but he STILL somehow gave me a nightmare iirc, and without the music it'd be horrifying again
I feel like this would particularly be jarring for the space levels, since those have a ton of background sound effects. Would possibly add tension to the King Boom Boo fight and getting seen by the Egg Beetle in Egg Quarters though.
why is it weird for it to not override more than the music? it's logical that it only muted the in game music.. because ur most likely listening to music on the MUSIC related app...
I'm just looking at it from how SA2 is designed settings wise. The game has no feature to tamper JUST music. I kinda figured that the sound of the games comes as a package, where when one is affected, the whole thing is; if that makes sense?
you can mute music in all the games, this is common feature not a bug. but ya ig not knowing much about this would cause anyone to come to this conclusion.
I've played a lot without music because on Dreamcast there was an occasional bug that removed the music from stages and I kinda like it, but I prefer to play that way in games like Sonic 06, Unleashed or Gens because sonic's steps are audible and he often speaks
I would argue this is just the characters perspectives. For example the GUN truck lacking tension makes perfect sense considering Sonic isn't worried at all. He knows he can outrun it with zero difficulty and leave it in the dust. But instead he's running JUST fast enough that the truck can keep.
That's actually a good outlook. The counterargument could be that it, at the very least, surprised him briefly, THEN he just goofed around with it. Great point, though!

Man without the music I do wonder how much of a horror feel it has. Like this is legit creepy I feel like something is watching our playable characters in the background. Like something evil and terrifying. I'd go as far as to say the game feels haunted without the music. Maybe the music playing is all in thier heads as they do the missions in the game.
White Jungle and Aquatic Mine without music would be creepy. First one because of it's Silent Hill vibes. And the second one because of jupmscares and overall damp dark aesthetics.
There is in fact an Action Replay code to play the game without music. I've done it before on the original Gamecube version, and on an emulator. In fact, that's how I recorded my own version of SA2 so I could add the music tracks in manually and thus control the volume levels so that they weren't playing over the voices during cutscenes.
I think the music muting when Spotify plays is to make it where there isn’t the Spotify music fighting the game music to be heard. Makes sense to me, but idk
