  • The title of this piece is ginga 銀河 (galaxy).
Suminagashi (墨流し), often translated to "floating ink," is the ancient Japanese technique of marbling. For me, it is art therapy.
There is something so healing about lightly touching your brushes to the surface of the water and creating those entrancing ink rings. Any slight breath or movement and a new design will take shape. You can't control it. You can't replicate it. It just is. In turn, forcing you to just go with its flow. To live and create without certainty.

Thank you so much for watching! I hope you will try making your own suminagashi print. A list of the materials I used and their links can be found below...
    + Brushes: www.dickblick.com/items/yasutomo-bamboo-sumi-brush-size-6/
    + Ink: www.dickblick.com/products/yasutomo-liquid-sumi-ink/
    + Paper: www.dickblick.com/products/yasutomo-japanese-sketch-paper-pads/
    + Tray: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071XJR3X1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
+ Water: I use distilled water to fill the tray about 1/4"-1/2". I use tap water to fill the cup and some all-natural dish soap (I don't measure it... whoops). You only need a little bit of soap - start with three or four drops (you can always add more).

Beautiful! The video is great- the music, filming, framing, and content. Can you comment on materials? Specifically I'm curious as to the ink (india, sumi, etc.) and the water (pure water, sizing). Thank you and thank you for sharing.

Hi Aaron! I left a pinned comment that I hope is helpful. I kinda just go with my gut on the water to soap ratio, but the tray is 11 x 17. You can use any tray really (I started with a baking pan). You only need 1/4-1/2 inch of water.

Hi there! Thank you so much for watching. 😊 You're right. One brush has ink, and the other has soapy water on it. I put water in a cup, add a few drops of dish soap, and then mix it together. I hope that helps!
