    @SDKsa1 Silver fuming is toxic when doing it without proper ventilation. I would imagine that if the silver were in the bowl then that would be quite toxic to the smoker as well. However, it isn't. The silver is on the sealed inner surface.

    @TimiaGlass so you mean the bowl that been silverfumed is sealed under a coat of glass or somthing.. then its okay for me to smoke out of that bowl.. but just to make sure is there anyways i can clean my bowl just to make sure there is not silver fumes for me to inhale

    thanks for showing this.
    one question though-
    isn't fuming hazardous?
    i see no protection, and i hear no ventilation.
    is this ok?

    it does work but produced very different colors and results than in boro, byt then again the soft glass allows the use of gold and silver foil where boro just burns it up.

    Actually, it is O2 that tarnishes silver, The oils in our skin help to burnish off tarnish and help to avoid tarnishing.

    Oh that is so cool. I'm suffering from boro envy. What a wonderful technique.

    does a silver-fumed piece of glass
    darken (oxidize) just like a silver piece of jewlery?
    do you have to encase it to protect it?
    or will encasing just burn it off?

  • @catman72
    @catman72 16 лет назад

    so i can just encase it normaly?
    any "right" way to do it?
    i'm worried about tarnishing because i want to make pendants, and human skin tarnishes silver very fast.
    BTW, don't we need a mask when fuming?

  • @catman72
    @catman72 16 лет назад

    could not hear anything but then i put the volume to max and heard the venting.
    thanks.
    i always thought you needed a mask as a precaution, too.
    was i wrong?

  • @TimiaGlass
    @TimiaGlass  16 лет назад

    It can be encased and often is. The few pieces I have around have not tarnished but they are not all that old either so I'm not sure about that.

    Even when not covered with clear glass, a moderate amount of heat will fuse the silver to the glass such that is won't come off with normal use. That said, I've seen cheap pipes that the silver was never worked in and you could wipe some of the fuming off. Even there, the amount of silver rubbing off is microscopic and nothing I'd ever concern myself with. Gold fume has a harder time bonding to the glass and is notorious for wiping off (especially inside out gold fume) but again, it's a tiny bit

    Hey there. What is your exhaust fan set up like? Im trying to keep my fan purchase cheap since im still trying to get my kiln. Have my glass and torch tho! gettting there.

    1. Do whatever is needed so that you do not breathe the toxic vapours. 2. Experiment to find what works out best for your application. That's the fun part. As for me, I don't do a lot of fuming. Maybe 5 minutes a month.

    I know Im a bit late but Im having trouble burning off my fume, Im trying to incase as well and seem with no fume when done, is this going to be my flame characteristic I just need to get it right I take it?

    alrighty.. is silver fuming what ever it is un healthy?? like if i smoked out of a bowl... will the silver fuming colorchangeing thing will be unhealthy??

  • @TimiaGlass
    @TimiaGlass  16 лет назад

    Fuming produces toxic gases and ventilation is important. The area I am working in is well ventilated. Can you hear the freight train?

  • @TimiaGlass
    @TimiaGlass  14 лет назад

    @SDKsa1 Well, I can't say for sure since I can't see your pipe or know who or how it was made. An acid wash is about the only thing I know that would remove it. Something like nitric acid. But if I were you and I had doubts I would just toss the thing.

  • @TimiaGlass
    @TimiaGlass  16 лет назад

    Fuming is just plating. I would think it would work on soft glass just as well as boro.

  • @egoegoegoego
    @egoegoegoego 15 лет назад

    No it doesn't rub off the fuming, almost all of my glass is fumed and ive cleaned it all a few times over.

    @SDKsa1 no lighter can fume silver, it has to be a much hotter flame

    he had alot of good points but i didnt seam him mension ALL glass colors come from from metals, if your bowl is colbalt blue it has uranium in it. if its pink i believe it is made from gold, (the colored rods them selfs) there are colors with mercury aluminum chrome uhh and lots of other metals, i honestly wouldnt worry about it at all if its jus silver or gold fumed. if you have any worries use a water pipe!,it should filter everything heavy out

  • @TimiaGlass
    @TimiaGlass  16 лет назад

    Actually, I have done that. I suppose there are many techniques for working with fumed metals. Personally, I don't do much with fuming.

    your lighter cannot get hot enough to melt the silver
    no worries it safe to use a fumed bowl

  • @SDKsa1
    @SDKsa1 14 лет назад

    @TimiaGlass its actually made professionally so i hope it wont do that XD if it need an acid wash i will do it... maybe... thanks alot though

    Smoking out of a silver fumed pipe is fine. Your Bic will never get the silver hot enough to vaporize like these torches can. Your okay, I promise.

    i know this is 3 years old but shit... this is so dumb i have to explain it for you.... First of all, theres no possible way you could inhale silver fumes while smoking... the lighter flame does not get nearly hot enough to release fumes... and when he said sealed on inner surface... he meant that its not in the part where you pack the weed, its on the INSIDE surface... you know the area where your resin builds and you scrape from?
