Exactly. This is not an individual project, and she brought up a good point. There are so many seniors that only speak Spanish and that was discrimination. Most of my great uncles who are citizens have trouble reading in Spanish because they weren’t able to finish elementary school. Their grandchildren help them fill out paperwork etc. That was a valid concern, no need to make it a big fuss.

I went back and watched the full AP coverage of the press conference. It was a "Harris County" press conference, so YES she can dictate what is going on. There was also an agreed upon schedule and Whitmire just thought he could change it....

The guy on the panel talking about her mental health is unprofessional and gross. This isn't an issue about her mental health, but of two people in elected positions unable to come to an agreement to professionally work together.

What the hell does a federal judge have to do with a presser for a natural disaster, especially when the mayoral representation of the affected area is there?
Mayor came into her house and tried to run the show. Transtar is county facility ( which serves about 4.8 million people) and the judge runs it. HEC 'Houston Emergency Center' is a city facility ( which serves about 2.3 million people) Hidalgo is in charge of county facilities (which was where they were at) and the mayor is in charge of city facilities. It is disrespectful for him to try to overstep his authority live on television, during a disaster. And whether we like her or not, if they had an agreement before they went on air and the mayor tries to change it while live on air, he is the one who committed the first act of disrespect.
It’s not her house. Houston is the majority of Harris county and the population hub.

The mayor exhibited mature behavior by stepping aside from Hidalgo’s childish hissy fit, rather than letting it spiral even further.
This is why I don't ever listen to the opinions of Marcus Davis. I KNEW before he opened his mouth that he was going to "both sides" it. Lina's behavior was so abhorrent that even Marcus could not defend it, but I knew he would not criticize her without criticizing the mayor as well.

She has handled several disasters very well. This his first one. He should defer to her experience. Fox news titled this a "petulant" exchange. Who are they assuming was petulant? Whitmire should follow the script and not try to grandstand.
I don’t see anything wrong with this. Sure we can clearly see they don’t have the best communication skills with each other, but that is an important point. Houston is a majority minority city, and the Spanish speaking community is huge in Harris and surrounding counties. At my daughter’s clinic we would often use the translator services because my parents and husband speak Spanish as their first language and English as their second. The pediatricians and translator worked great together, the doctor would explain something briefly and then the translator would follow up. I see why she “interrupted” I’ve translated many times and it’s often hard/ impossible to translate if you don’t do it after having heard a few sentences. Hidalgo and Whitmire have a long way to go and need to put their grudges behind them. Their duty is to Houston and shouldn’t let personal grudges get in the way of their duties. The ASL person was translating for the deaf/hard of hearing, it’s the same concept. People need to know what our mayor is saying.

what we have here is a situation that would create emotions to swell or run high for everyone. And what you saw is was someone who could not regulate those emotions correctly. Of course it’s not because she’s a female and being emotional, that’s not what I’m trying to say just to be clear. It happens to anyone when, as I said before , their emotions are running high and they cannot regulate them. They’re very dramatic or over-the-top or a little too overly zealous about in their reactions, and their perception is probably skewed a bit. It’s like calm down no ones out to get you, no one’s going to miss out or be left out. take a step back and let everyone speak in order. Your job is to keep people informed, calm, and updated. Not have a petty tiff in front of everyone leading by bad example.

Both were in the wrong, but it was 80% Hidalgo. Mayor John should have left the “qualified list” comment at home. This is a case of a mayor who has been a life-long public servant and a self-serving young politician who remains unqualified for her office. It’s just making my decision to leave Harris County when I retire all the easier.

Shame on the news caster for name calling; it clearly demonstrates mental health issues with this news caster who doesn’t understand that it is important to communicate in Spanish and English when we have 35% of our population who speak only Spanish.

@Mew2twwo There are two local Spanish speaking channels that ALWAYS translate the updates in Spanish. Why isn't there a Vietnamese, Urdu, or Korean translator? Because we don't have phucking time to listen to EVERY damn "SPECIAL" group's translator stand up there during a crisis.
No other country accommodates EVERY ethnic group and/or foreign language, ESPECIALLY during a crisis. So sick and tired of the woke 8ull5hit.
