A few years back at some hot springs near Mammoth Mt, CA, a couple of folks were in some local hot springs (used regularly), when there was a "thermal event" which sent scalding hot water into their spring and cooked both of them. There were other folks there, but not in the water, heard the screams and called 911. Sadly the first responders had to remove the bodies that had no flesh, only bone on their lower extremities. Not a pretty thing to deal with for those brave responders.

If he wanted to soak, they should have just went up by the state's north boarder to Boiling River. There's literally a parking lot and a path to enjoy the water. Much safer to find a good spot.

In the book Death in Yellowstone, the author's first story is about a guy who dove head first into a pool in order to save his friends' dog, who had jumped in and started yelping terribly. The guy emerged, his skin cooked white, his eyes completely white. His friend, the dogs' owner, stepping in (burning his legs) to pull him out. The diver guys skin came off his hand like a glove, but he got ashore. They raced him to a hospital, where all they could do was give him morphine and IVs, in a desperate attempt to keep his body hydrated. Not having skin, you don't hold in water. I believe he lasted for many hours, but eventually died of dehydration. The park rangers were able to retrieve the dogs bones. The book is full of stories like this, but none of them describe the victim as dying instantly. I took my 10 yo son to Yellowstone a couple years ago, and I told him this and other stories. We actually met the author, who was signing 2nd edition copies of the book he's famous for. As for this guy? I can't feel to sorry for him, despite the horrible way he died. He was destroying the beauty of this park, as he thought his amusement was more important.
