Benny - been watching and listening to your work since 2012 - I love that you do pop songs as well with the “Leppardized” twist!! You’re my absolute favorite cover artist! Cheers from Portland Oregon.
Perfect mate, I've been looking for ages for that Def Leppard sound and you've nailed it. I've got a rg550, ME80, Junction box and a Blackstar Ae10 too. Keep up the good work fella 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Your so right about using chorus as a means for creating a "larger" sound. I use Boss GT-100 and have chorus rate low depth high on most my drive presets. I also sometimes use stereo pitch shifter with dry at roughly 12:00 for a faux wet/dry/wet sound
I just ordered me a Boss Me50 and a m-track solo audio interface, i dont have a palmer pdi09 (yet) lol, i just got my guitar brought back to life with new parts too and gonna get into playing again cause its been a while :)
So humble, knowledgable and dedicated, absolutely love you bud. Wondered if you’ve heard much from band Ratt? And if you’ve ever covered any of their tracks? Been a fan of you for the past 7yrs now. Love your content.
Dude, great video. I have the me80 and tbh my Leppard tone similar to yours, but this will help me fine tune things. Your are very knowledgeable and passionate on the subject. Keep up the good work!
Ben I have the boss me 50 and the Palmer junction box and my mixing board. I know the Palmer I can run to my sound board from the right side of the box. What goes into the two plug ins on the left side of the Palmer? I do have a pedal board so if you can help me with that I have my speaker our to my board and I do use the Rockman sustainer which has incredible sound but I would like to use my boss and Palmer. What are you running into and out the left side of the Palmer? You have great sound. John New Iberia, Louisiana. Thanks
Hey bwm love this video I’ve been trying to get a Def Leppard tone for what feels like ages but does the me50 work well with amps cause I have a boss amp and I really wanted to get the me50 to get the tones I’m after but idk if it will sound good and work with it
Yeah, so maybe the best way to think about the Palmer is that it is a consistent amp and any volume. I used to use my Boss through a regular amp, but the tone and settings would have to change depending on the volume so I felt I was always having to tweak. The palmer just helped keep everything consistent. Hope that helps, cheers!
Not sure if your familiar with Amplitube 5, but would you happen to know what amps, racks, etc that are available on amplitube 5 would get you the closest to their 88 Hysteria tour tone?
It's not something I've used but I imagine you would be able to get close using a high gain amp, delay and chorus. On the Hysteria tour they used Randal RG100 heads, TC2290 Delays and TC1210 chorus into Palmer Speaker sims.
Him and Phil were using Randall RG100 preamps with TC Electronic 2290 and 2110, Randall power amps into various Randall 4x12 speakers that were on the stage.
Hi Ben, great live. I could not arrive on time due to the time difference between countries. For next time I'll be more attentive, what is your time zone? Regards.
The purpose of this vid is to try and show what I think are the fundamental elements that hopefully others can replicate on their own. I have no idea but I’d suggest getting a compressor.
I use more or less your same sounds but with single pedals 🤣..boss dd7 delay, chorus ch1, overdrive sd1 and use a holy grail reverb to create atmosphere in some parts 😉
Great insight, thanks so much for sharing, look forward to trying to get that great Leppard sound on my Jackson PC1 PS, what monitors or speakers do you use ?
Don't think it's the Rockman so much as a stereo sound for the post effects like chorus snd echos etc. Chorus like this sounds a lot different So, like a stereo combo amp or modeling in stereo sound great for this. They ran the Rockman in stereo in studio and Phil has talked about using the Gallien Krueger which was a stereo amp with built in chorus and echo.
Not sure what you saying here in relation to this video. Studio guitars were double tracked and had post fx in stereo. Live they have stereo effects for sure. I’m showing how I can get a similar sound with my particular setup which is in mono. Also, there isn’t one specific sound for all these things. A lot of the chorusing on the albums is flanger too.
@@bwm5150 Your video is on getting there sounds, pointed out an element in getting those. You mentioned Rockman in gear they used, that's why I brought it up. I didn't mean they have one sound. A lot of bands use stereo but may not be as big as a part as in some of Def Leppards sounds as the effects are more prominent. 80's in general.
@@johncecilia4517 I still don’t understand what you mean. I mention Rockman as a piece of gear they used on Hysteria. I mention what they used live. I don’t get where your stereo point comes in. If people want to have a sound similar to them, they can achieve it by having certain effects. It doesn’t need to be stereo, it doesn’t need to be anything in particular really. As long as they feel they have a sound that they’re happy with which motivates them to play along.
@@bwm5150 So only your opinion matters or you just like arguing. Just adding an idea to your video. You don't have to like it. Might help someone else get a sound they like Most people that have the effects you mentioned would have stereo outs like yours, like most multi effects.
@@johncecilia4517 if you want to add a tip to say that stereo effects helps, that’s cool. But to imply that its importance is greater than the Rockman I think is naive and dismissive of the video. If that’s your opinion then that’s cool but I’d argue the sound of the compressed distortion, Rockman, is more akin to the ‘Lep’ like sound and why you find other videos showcasing Rockmans with its connection to the band. Also, I will always reply to correct blanket statements about how the album was recorded when no sources are provided. Just because something is or can be a stereo unit, doesn’t mean it was recorded that way. There is nothing I have heard on the multitracks that suggest what you imply. Sure, it may have been done, but the majority of the stereo field sounds like it was achieved with overdubbing. The mono multitracks certainly suggest this.
Sounds great man. Don't know if you follow a guy by the name of Michael Nielsen. He's got a video he did a few months back on the Marshall JMP-1 Preamp. The opening noodle he does at the beginning gets an incredibly close modern Lep tone. Dunno if there is anything you can glean from it, but worth a watch for sure. ruclips.net/video/qaqvyS67SmM/видео.html

I even have magazine scans from the Adrenalize era where Phil himself has said his Rockman had wires hanging out of it. Yes Andy Summers had a great Flanger effect, He used an EH Mistress which is kinda like a Flanger/Chorus mix.
Slipped my mind, of course, the infamous Mistress. I believe the closest copy out there is the Hartman flanger.

Did Def Leppard use palmers and power amps on the hysteria tour?
The Palmers fed into the FOH (front of house) mixing desk and the Randall power amps were for the cabinets on the stage.
