    Thanks for this video! I recently inherited a 10 year old Senegal when my sister passed away. He hasn't been out of his cage in years. He was so traumatized by losing her, then being moved ,that I could barely put my hands in the cage to feed him. It's been about a month now. Last week he started to play with toys again, and this week we're working on him taking a treat from my hand inside the cage! This progress is so encouraging for me.
    Thanks again

    After spending 3 months of RUclips searches on parrot training, I just discovered your channel! I'm a new cockatiel parent with what feels like an untamed bird. in a way, I feel like I made the mistake of buying the bird from a pet store and not waiting to adopt. Your videos have been informative and I look forward to seeing more... possibly training a young bird compared an older bird. Thanks!

    Found your channel and it has been so helpful to learn about parrot behavior, etc. I just got my Quaker last week and I love him, but realized that I'm in for a challenge with training. He is absolutely smart and defiant. What about the morning grumpy behavior? When I go to uncover him, he is angry with me and won't stop squawking. I place his morning food and water in his cage, but he just spends his time yelling at me. I've tried sitting with him, but all he wants to do is yell. Suggestions, so that I don't get into any bad habits with him? Thank you so much!

    Thanks so much for this video. I purchased to 4 month old cockatiels that the store claimed the were handfed but got wild in their time at the store. Personally I don't believe they were handfed. They are aggressive they bite to draw blood. They eat pellets and I gave them millet spray as treats . I sit with them so they are aware of my presence.
    I am trying my best to be patient .

    I have a very fearful Indian ringneck that I have acquired 4 days ago from my father, as soon as I enter the room he starts becoming very anxious pacing up and down in his cage, I have tamed my parrotlet using this method but boy oh boy this ringneck is way more stubborn. But your tip on allowing him to just be around me for the first week with no interaction other then feeding , water and maintainance of his cage I completely forgot about. I am struggling to get him to eat pellets, and ideas on how to convert him from a sunflower diet to a pellet based diet with veggies? He shows no interest in eating them or isnt aware that it is food and I fear he will starve.

    • @parrotsco.3224
      @parrotsco.3224 4 года назад +1

      Consistency is key, it can take some time. Positive reinforcement goes a long way. As for diet it can be tough forsure if all it eats is sunflower seeds for years its like going on a diet after burgers and shakes all your life. You can try mixing 1/4 pellets to seeds for 1-2 weeks, then 1/2 pellets to seeds etc. to make the transition gradual. It sounds like there could be underlying issues that can be impacting diet/behavior. Try to get as much history on him as possible.

    Ive got an african jardine named perry, and ive had him for about a year now. His previous owners abused him. Hes very sweet when hes in his cage, he'll let stick my finger or hand in the cage and pet him. Once he steps out from his cage, if i try to pet him, he'll lunge at me and try to bite me. Do you have any idea of how i can get him to start coming out of his cage more, and eventually step up onto my hand?

    I was given a Blue Fronted Amazon Parrot, he’s 37 years old. The only thing I know about the parrot is, that he’s been kept in his cage. His owner didn’t interact with him, and was told that he doesn’t know how to fly. I’m trying to teach him to become more tame and lovable. I do know that he let me pet his head a couple of times. And he does take treats from my hand. Also I observed one time he was trying to regurgitate his food to feed me. I’ve had him now for a month, would like for him to be more friendly and not try to bite as well. He doesn’t like for you to touch him.😢

      I had a 2nd hand birb. He wouldn't let me touch him. I used a pillow and he would stay on that. It would only last 2 sec then back in. Then every day it was more and more time out of his cage. Slowly. I think if a bird is biting a wing trim brings them down a notch. Mine becomes more loving. Less aggressive. I'd try every day just petting his head 1 sec or one stroke on the head and work on that with a treat. So that every day he assoc that with you and human is good. Over time I could pet him all over but he still didn't like the sides under his wings touched. Also study his body language and get to know his feathers and eyes. I learned when he was about to bite.

    • @parrotsco.3224
      @parrotsco.3224 4 года назад +1

      Hi @Rhi Funke ! What I did to transition Elfie, was I bought Zupreem Parrot Mix (All pellets, fruit flavor), I did 25% of his meals with pellets for a 4-5 days, then 50%, 75%, then 100% pellets only did this transition over ~3 weeks. It might be difficult in the beginning because she's used to the fatty stuff (kind of like people when we go on a diet haha) and your conure might throw out the pellets at first, but just follow a similar transition so she can adjust. Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes

I really want to tame this bird so I will try this method. If by any reason it does not work, the staff from the aviary told me I had to grab the bird with a towel and just pet him and keep trying to handle him. I will be basically forcing this bird. Is that a good idea???

I haven't had him for long but my mom who does not listen to me whatsoever was very.. ill mannered towards my bird. He seems to now hate human hands and I have been reading so many articles on what to do. No matter what I do my bird bites. I have been handfeeding fruits lately to gain trust. When I show up he paces back and forth at the bottom of the cage and chirps but I don't know exactly what that means. Sometimes he climbs up when I get closer and bobs his head.
    I would like some tips on what to do about the biting.

      When parrots do this pacing it’s usually they are anxious/excited to get out or they are non stimulated in the cage and do this as an only means to release energy. You see this a lot with animals that are kept in zoos in enclosures.

Another thing is when he was younger my sister would tease him by taping him in the head I would always speak out against it but my parents wouldn't stop her after that he never really let anyone touch him and that has escalated to full on flyby biting and a lot of aggression any tips or more like instructions I really at a lost here

    • @parrotsco.3224
      @parrotsco.3224 4 года назад +2

      Hey Edgar, could be the cockatiel is jealous (maybe) or he doesn’t like certain people around him/his cage so he flies and full on bites people to let them know they’re not wanted. Setting up formal training sessions, making sure his diet is good/good sleep, and socializing him around other people (with positive reinforcement) might help. He could also be transitioning to adult life when they get hormones going and birds are known to get a little crazy for a while. Just some thoughts!

      Well it is what it is, any opportunity you get to socialize your parrot, you should and make it gradual. Don’t just put it on someone’s shoulder etc. start with educating guests on parrot handling, ignoring for a bit then, treats through the cage, then step up with new people + treats etc.

He used to be the best parrot in the world but an accident happened some weeks ago in which I step on him by accident and now he absolutely hates my feet. He chases them frantically and tries to bite them(or destroy them completely). Ever since he has been extremely aggressive and I can't handle him anymore. I've been very sad because he used to be my buddy. I'm planning to let him alone for some weeks so he disassociates my feet with danger and then do something else with positive reinforcement. But what strategy could I use? I'm not sure if I give him treats when he sees my feet would reinforce the feeling of danger that he feels when he sees them or if he would associate the treat with the feet themselves.

      Sorry to hear that, maybe try not letting him be on the floor so he’s not reminded of the feet that hurt him. Keep him on a perch/play stand and start building trust again rewarding with treats for good/calm behaviors. You could also try getting his attention on something else through training sessions with you i.e. target training with a clicker or trick training?

      I would say between 3-4 months. It will depend on your parrot Elfie has a tendency to be shy/on the tame side when I got him so I had a bit of a head start. A lot of it had to do with getting him to not bite others/my gf + socialization.

    Salam (peace) what to do if you use a stick to put in the cage to try to train and all it does is bite it and sometimes bites you as well what to you do to get it to stop attacking the stick and or your finger aggressively thanks in advance my bird is a Black Cap Conure or / Neo Tropical Parrot 🦜🌴

      Wa-Alaikum-Salaam! Hmmm sounds like your bird is aggressive at the moment. I would start using positive reinforcement using clicker train and a target stick through the cage with treats. Also make sure the diet you’re feeding it is balance with chop and pellets. This can have a huge impact as well.

    Hey awesome videos! I wanted to know what could be the cause of this weird biting out of no where, I have a pellet/ veggie diet, he listens only when I have a treat in my hand I have had him for 1 month. At the beginning he was more fearful and I understood that. I purchased him from a guy who knew nothing about birds, I have tried petting his beak at the beginning. Was ok, but he lunges at my finger now.
    I tried touching his feet or his head but he really doesn’t like to get my hand anywhere near his head.
    I tried playing with his toys with him at the beginning was okay and then he tries to find and bite me.
    Inside his cage he tries to bite me and then outside of it he just flies away.
    I would appreciate to know how to get him to trust me better and more.

    Hi there. We adopted a Young African grey that abuse by her previous owner, he used to hit her and swear at her. I wanted to know how to go by to get her to relax and stop stressing. I have started working with her by talking to her and she is taking food out my hand but she is in her cage. We also have our own African grey called Elvis and he goes everywhere with us and has the freedom of the house and love the the kids as well. In short he is the king of the house. He walks in the garden, in the house and goes where he wants. He only sleeps in his cage at night. Nollie is a different story. Like I said in the beginning she did not want to come close to me, now she is talking to me and talking to me but we can't take her out of her cage as she bites. Hoe can I win her confidence to trust to come to me by sitting on my hand and getting her to get out of her cage. Any tips?

      Yeah things get interesting when you get a mating pair. They basically can lose interest in humans because they have each other haha. Evil I know right 🤦🏽‍♂️. You could try having them in separate cages and working with them individually. But once they become a bonded pair things get tricky. Also if they were wild caught (without you knowing) and sold to you, it’s going to be challenging to get them more tame. What have you tried before?
