- In which I visit the Media Archeology Fundus of the Humbold-University in Berlin. Hosted by Professor Dr. Wolfgang Ernst and curated by Dr. Stefan Höltgen, Philipp Schäfer and Philipp Sander, the fundus is home to a hands on collection of "dead media". From wire and tape recorders, cocktail mixing analog computers to incredibly rare synths, this place is playfully eclectic.
Thanks to Kasper Dornfeld for initiating this.

I love that he is compelled to talk about the cause of moire on your camera.
Me too! It’s so at the core of what they do
Dude, your thumbnail is practically a vitral. It could decorate the church of the sacred order of synthesizers.
I also got a Beatification of The Experimental Musician vibe from the thumbnail.
Holy HAINBACH, the savior of sounds 🎛🙏🏼🎚
Experimental electronic music made with old school tech is the most german thing Ibcan think about. Don't change, Hainbach.
6:15 I think this is the first time I've ever heard anyone correctly use the term "cybernetic" to refer to a governor.
I was reading Wolfgang Ernst's book last year and then recently I discovered Hainbach, and I was like oh shit they are both in Berlin, I think Hainbach would find media archeology theory super interesting, and bang.
It is super-fascinating, so happy to have been invited!
More videos like this! I can hear your joy in your voice when you do these.
This reminded my of a wonderful book I read last year - Kristen Gallerneaux's High Static, Dead Lines. She explores similar 'dead' sound objects, and I think she even runs an American equivalent of this wonderful facility!
Wonderful and interesting video as always, too.
I think we have located Techmoan's German cousin.
Matt from Techmoan would love this.... oooh Korg MS-10.... lovely place! Brilliant idea! Ooooh.... analogue computer.
This is so awesome to see how things came about, how other areas of technology influence others. I hope we never stop building new gadgets.
Thank you, Hainbach, you inspire!
That recordplaying car is the best! I believe the finnish label Fonal once released a record with such a car for playing it as a part of the release?
I hope you can go back and jam on this stuff! Just plugging an old analog synth into that Copycat would be a dream.
You should make an album out of that room:) Would be cool. 8:11 one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen.
Why, Hainbach's house is where you want to visit! 8-)
Yesyesyesyes, my favorite youtube musician meets my favorite European media theory institution/department!
Loving this sooo much! What you're doing was great from the beginning yet you keep getting better and better - congrats!
Thank you! I just had a live stream where I thought about the department - the Zoom compression made everything sound super weird, definitely listening to the medium revealing itself.
amazing!!! the first place im goona visit as soon as i'm in berlin.
OMG it's a fantastic collection 👌👌👌
I’m heading straight there from the train next time I’m in Berlin.
I have a 4 disc set of locked grooves made for the use of 4 or more VW record players.
Nice to hear some Merzbow! 9:30
You should definetly come check out the SMEM in my town Freiburg - Switzerland once it would be awesome to have you !
Well that was awesome.
Love learning and exploring sound instruments/devices. I wish you could explore the world and find more places like this create, improvise, experiment while narrating your experience.
It might be my headphones, but this gentleman sound a bit like Blixa Bargeld.
Lovely, looks just like home! :D
This is my dream playground
What a fascinating place!
6:09 These devices are where the term "balls to the wall" comes from, so I was told, anyway.
Merci beaucoup...très interessant
Thank’s
What the f- was that at the very end?
Was that your impersonation of a ninja pretending to fight someone in the background of a scene? It’s glorious!
I tried to play pitches on this, which was really hard - needs calibration. But yeah, martial arts extra is my fav dance style
HAINBACH Yeah I figured! Thank you, HAINBACH! May the electro-magnetic field be with you!
i was glad to see the korg ms10 on the shelf in this collection of amazing gear
12:05 rename this dance dance theremin revolution .. you got to work those those microtonals Hainbach 😎
nice dad dancing at the end there :)
I wish I'd known about this when I was in Berlin ;____;
Is that the world's biggest slide rule up on the top shelf at 02:32?
"Hi, I'm Hainbach. It's good to have you bach."
an immaculate thumbnail !! and great video
What I want to know H. H. is how you keep your luxuriant hair looking so impeccably fly?
😁
What a nice place!
Hainbach in Sampling Heaven - hope you've got that software disc sampled :)
Yes, and I put it in the soundpack for patrons 😃
HAINBACH super - hole ich mir dann gleich! Danke
It is the @Techmoan's basement?^^
My dogs both left the room while the bus playing the code record. Uncultured, clearly!
I think @Techmoan will be interested in this video...
Five people dislikes obsolete media!
das war sehr interessant ... I think I got lost quick Dankeschööön
Well, this video answered a question that I’ve had. Does Hainbach dance?
Theramin Tai Chi!
Waaaw the phonograph klang
And that sample is too cool
@@Hainbach You mean the returning male voice ? One more question what is the white panel over the Polivoks name ?
Wait, maybe my Teenage Engineering PO-33 can understand the code from the vinyl and deliver some interesting beats :)
Hello fellow audio spectrals
I can't find part 2. Please help!
