What bothers me most is Luciana Paris' smile during That's Life... Very odd. Instead of giving back as good as she gets she's
smiling blissfully all the time. There's generally not much nuance in the dramatic interactions and phrasing but otherwise quite okay.

Totally agree. I thought I was the only one considering this. Anyways it is such a beautiful piece. They are both wonderful dancers.

I can understand why you'd think it's misplaced, but dancers are coached to be tough but not mean for this pas. It's a fine line, but she is supposed to kind of love it. Life knocks 'em down, but they get back up. Twyla doesn't let a woman play the victim. 😏

CiCi Houston You jump to conclusions. Just because I don't consider her blissful smile suitable for this ballet it doesn't follow I wish her to be mean. There is a difference between grinning all the time, being tough, and being mean. Elaine Kudo got it right, she was mysterious and tough without being mean and without toothpaste ad smiling, and she was a little bit different in every part of the ballet.

Ballet Janie, I understand, and maybe I worded my reply carelessly. It's a really fine line that many artists struggle to master. I'm ballet master for 9 Sinatra Sings right now, so I've been hearing a lot of discussion from the Tharp stager about this very subject. It's so hard to get it right.
