Hello Joe! I recently came across your channel and watched this video. I've been fishing pretty much my whole life and while I won't be joining the Bassmasters tour any time soon, I'd consider myself in the experienced to advanced group. If I may I'd like to give just a little theory about Spinning vs. Baitcasters when it comes to casting. On spinning reels, your lure is pulling the line off of the spool and the spool itself does not spin or turn during the cast. This means your lure is fighting against the friction of the line being pulled off the spool during the cast. When the lure loses velocity, it simply stops pulling line off the spool. With baitcasters, the spool itself starts to spin and feed line out when you cast the lure. This reduces the drag and friction the lure encounters, and the lure can fly freely. However, if the spool is turning faster and feeding out more line than the lure is taking out during flight, this is when you get an over-run aka backlash. The magnets, braking systems and thumb are used to slow the spool down during the cast so that the spool isn't turning too fast and feeding out more line than the lure is going to travel in distance. Having your thumb on the spool too much won't cause the backlash necessarily, what will cause it though is if you have your thumb on the spool and you cast with enough force that when you remove your thumb the spool has to speed up in order to try to "catch up" with the amount of line the lure needs to travel.
