    Y'all should watch Hanging with Pawpaw (Lester's dad) he puts heavy whipping cream in a jar with a lid and shakes it until butter forms then he pours off the buttermilk and shapes the butter by squeezing the excess liquid out and then he washes it gently in cold water and adds salt at the end. He's a great guy to watch.

      We had a butter churn. We had cows and Mom would save the cream from the milk and sometimes I would crank the handle until we had butter. Then Mom would pour the butter milk off and wash the butter and add salt. She worked the remainder of the butter milk out while she washed it. My kids made butter in preschool with baby food jar with cream in it. They shook the jar and made homemade butter.

    Crandall and Marci, one thing I'd like to add to your butter making is that you do need to wash the butter after you have gotten most all the buttermilk out of it first. You then put the clump of butter in ice water and squeeze it with your hands to get more buttermilk out of it. Change the water and keep squeezing until the water is clear. Then salt the butter by squeezing to mix it in. The reason for washing the butter is that butter will spoil if it isn't washed of all buttermilk. The more you enjoy the butter the newness may wear off and you won't use it quite as fast. I wouldn't want you to loose the great butter for missing this step. Lots of good eating when it's done from scratch cooking.

    Marci....for whipping heavy cream....Place that metal mixer bowl in the fridge for awhile before whipping.. A chilled bowl will help the cream whip better and faster. Also, you can first wipe down the bowl with a tad of vinegar to remove any film that might be left after washing from your last use. That chilled bowl is a big help though.

    This brings back so many memories! Growing up Saturday was always bread baking day. My mom and I would make the bread for the week. My mom's bread would win blue ribbons at the local fair every year. We did have a written recipe, my mom had just worked out how much was needed and taught me the same. I always just eye balled it and knew when I had the right amount of each ingredient. The smell of baking bread is really what makes a home feel so cozy and welcoming. The best scent in the world. 💖💖💖

    To get butter from a cow, you need to separate the cream from the milk first. My grandpa used to do it. They had a machine they called a "separator" that separated the cream from the milk. My grandma made the best homemade bread and butter. I could eat the butter all by itself or on the bread. They lived that way all their lives. I miss them. They passed in the 1970's. (I'm 73).

    All you really need is good heavy whipping cream, and some salt and some cold water. You don’t even need a mixer you just need a big jar with a lid that you can shake your jar pour it half full of heavy, whipping cream, and then shake it till it becomes solid takes about 2025 minutes depending on how big a jar you got or you can use your mixer. Then once it’s solidifies, and your jar or your mixing bowl, take it out, knead your butter rinse it with cold water until it runs clear. Once it runs clear, you wanna knead all of the water out of it then if you want salt in it, you add a dash of salt depending on how much butter you’ve got you can taste it as you go until you get the saltiness you desire. Then put it in the container and put it in your fridge or the freezer.

It is a big sheet just doubel it cut off what you need.

    I use a piece of gauze or even muslin. Gauze is closer to the cheesecloth that my great grandmother used than what you usually find today. You can line a strainer with a piece of cotton muslin and use that. You can put a towel up over top of mixer to keep from splashing everywhere.
    When we were growing up my mom would put cream in gallon jar and we would roll back and forth across the kitchen floor between us till we had butter. Almost a game.

    Cream is expensive, but the butter taste better.
    Making butter is easy, and you will fine tune it each time you make it. I add a lot of salt in the beginning (it blends better) because a lot will come out in the butter milk.
    I found emptying the liquid into a bowl, the first time, then, beating a few seconds more to remove the rest. You don't need cheese cloth. I make a few little containers of it, and freeze what I am not going to use, for a later time. I am so proud of you for trying this!!
    It should last close to 2 weeks in your fridge.

    • @leannekenyoung
      @leannekenyoung 8 месяцев назад +1

      Only if they washed the butter and removed all the buttermilk because it’s the buttermilk that will go bad fast and the butter will as well but if you truly get all the milk out then all you are left with is the fat and it will last a long time especially if you freeze it. Also the buttermilk is terrific in a lot of recipes like buttermilk pancakes or buttermilk biscuits! If you can make bread then you definitely can make buttermilk biscuits!! God bless and best of luck!!🥰❤️🙏🏻🇨🇦🍁.
