Kneeling after a total knee replacement should only be performed after your surgeon and physical therapist have approved it. If you have poor bone quality or complications with your surgery kneeling might need to be avoided.

I was 3 1/2 months post op, and I fell on black ice on my deck. It was horrible! I had to scoot inside. When I went to the ER they thought I had broken the new knee. Thankfully I hadn’t. At my subsequent PT appointment I couldn’t even lift my leg, and I had been doing it with ankle weights before the fall. Although it set me back about a month in my recovery, I healed and am now at 128 (unassisted) and 132 (assisted) flexion and 0 extension. I share this to give people hope if they have a setback. Keep working at it, but listen to your body!

I have fallen in my bedroom and was not able to get up. It was terrifying. I live alone to make matters worse. Do you have.any suggestions that would help me?

I asked to be trained on how to get up/down on the floor, by my Physical Therapy team at about 3 months PO. I was very hesitant, but once I knew the "proper" mechanics of getting down/up, it was quite easy and by no means caused me any pain. Thanks for all of your expertise and experience. I wish I knew about your Your Tube videos and the Support Group earlier on in my recovery process. LTKR - 08/25/2021.

Hello Tony, sorry I missed your video on Kneeling down. I am 6 months post opt, still not able to kneel down. How should I go about it? I am seeing my deep tissue massage therapist each week, should ask him to help me? He is working on my knee and leg as I still have leg pain, tightness around my knee in the morning when I wake up. I am doing massage on my own and doing the peddler bike. Thank you Tony.

Im so happy you brought up about doing too much..I thought I was helping myself sprint ahead by doing more, only to find my knee swollen and tight by bedtime, and my rom deminished. You nailed that info. Thanks for reminding me to not make this rehab a race.

Sometimes we need someone who can objectively look at the situation and suggest something completely different. I am glad it worked out for you.

    Hi Tony,
I’m at 6 months now since my TKR and I’m at 95% however I can’t seem to get my knee totally straight. My guess is 10 degrees less than straight. Also I experience some discomfort in the back of my knee at night while in bed. BTW I’ve used the grocery bag over the knee with 8 pound weight in it while my knee is lifted up on a chair. Can you recommend an exercise or do a video on this or just offer your opinion on my condition. Really I can function very well but I’d like to do better if possible. Thanks for all your helpful videos.
    Frank

In our pre-op session they said most can't kneel. They don't know why some can and others can't. But as Tony said, what if you do fall and no one is there to help. I think it's important to try. Even if you get to a piece of furniture being able to kneel is helpful. My PT worked on that with me at my last couple sessions.

Thank you for addressing kneeling. I’m 6 months post-op TKR and I hadn’t even thought about the idea that I even COULD kneel. I’d just been avoiding it but I want to do gardening in the spring so I’m going to start working on it now.
