  • I didn’t realize how much I had to say about this book until I actually sat down in front of the camera. Managed to cut almost 2 straight yap-hours down to 45 minutes.
I finished reading Daughter of the Moon Goddess, which was HIGHLY recommended to me from my other #1 supporter aka my big sister and honestly, I had pretty high expectations. Once I finally started the book I was super excited for what I would get into and about 25% of the way through the book…I was still waiting for something to happen.
This book takes place over a long stretch of time and doesn’t get to a lot of the impactful, plot-developing action until almost halfway through the book. I constantly found myself going back and rereading sections because after a while, my brain would just tune out. This book has a very specific style that is heavily dependent on narration to deliver world-building and other exposition. Which, for me personally, is not something I gravitate towards.
As I already said in the video, I think my reading and potential enjoyment of this book was impacted because I am consuming it for content. I may be more hyper critical of the book and its contents than if I were only reading it for pleasure. And I can also recognize that this book is written for a specific audience and maybe I’m just not that audience. That is OF COURSE not to say that this book is “bad” nor am I discouraging anyone from reading it. In fact, I would love to hear what people have to say, especially if they disagree with me.
This is also a debut novel and Sue Lynn Tan is a national bestseller and I am a baby booktuber so, who am I truly?

I DNF'd this at 52% a week or two ago. The fact that she was willing to give up the quest to save her mother for a cardboard man.... I just couldn't. I waited to see if it would get better when she started fighting monsters and was so so so irritated that it didn't. I'm so glad to find this video!

I think the allure for me as a full Chinese who grew up on these myths and legends and also an array of Chinese tv shows that portrayed all these stories in a variety of ways, this book was good for me because it was reminiscent of those vibes. I found the writing was poetic and beautiful in quite an Eastern way. I fucking loved the worldbuilding and I felt so immersed in landscapes and scenes. I can understand the writing wasn't deep or complex. The characters also all felt flat but in my mind they all hit the mark exactly as I imagined the characters little child me saw. The pacing also reflects Chinese dramas so I found it comfortable for me. The end felt a bit rushed though idk why but I'm not massively mad about it lol.
All that to say... This book really made me feel represented and I loved it as a little yellow girlie. But I respect that it's not for everyone but just wanted to offer a different perspective. Also I'm excited to see more Chinese inspired stories!

So glad we're talking about this. This book sucked me in DEEP at first. And then it was class time with the prince, and joining the military I guess. Oh great a love triangle. I DNF'd it in Act 3 because I forgot about it and it went back to the library. Anyway I feel so validated by this video. The characters were super boring. The cover art is so beautiful it makes me want to cry though. Also the main character feels like she's made of paper, she's just flat, emotionless, basic. Everyone is into her for some reason. Ugh. I often still think about how this book let me down. EDIT: "I support women's wrongs" had me guffawing

Exactly!! 😂 This book was so bad. I bought it last year and after reading, I sold it! Extremely disappointing. Nothing special about it at all.

I feel so validated. One of my friends LOVES this series, and I just couldn't understand why 😭 it's so juvenile and the characters are so bland

i'm so glad i found your video! I just finished listening to the audiobook for this as well and had the EXACT same thoughts and experiences. I almost dnfed thinking maybe i'll just try to pick it up another time, maybe i'm just not in the right place to be reading this book right now. and then was like NAH LET'S JUST BLAST THROUGH WITH AN AUDIOBOOK lol. I had the same issue with this book that i had with She Who Became the Sun. Everything felt so far removed from the reader so there was no connection with any of the characters LEAST OF ALL the main character. I thought what would have made the book even more interesting would have been for the demon realm to actually be the good guys (since it was very ham fisted down our throats how awful the emperor and empress are) and for her to form an alliance with them and take down the Celestial Emperor, but what do i know...
EDIT: i mentioned to a friend after finishing "I have never in my life read a book that simultaneously felt like nothing was happening and yet so much had happened"

This is so valid, that book took me a year to finish, no joke, biggest reader's block ever. I think the main problem is that YA-ish than how they sell it
