Kendrick has helped me in ways I never would of thought music could, I heard To Pimp A Butterfly when I really needed to connect with something or someone that I felt understood what I was going through. Kendrick talking about his depression in TPAB helped me heal and actually be proud of my struggles. Kendrick man you're truly a modern classic, thank you!
I don't understand why people, including Kendrick Lamar don't give his actual first album Section.80 the stature of album. It was probably one of the best album of that year.
DEVANSH SHARMA it is his debut album. But gkmc is his major debut album, and his first physical release, you can therefore say that it was his "proper" debut.. Section.80 was a great album, indeed, one of the better hip-hop releases of the past years, gkmc and TPAB on the other hand are arguably the best hip-hop releases in the past years
connorreecelucas14 is that a polybag with signed CD just like the copy I own of Cilvia Demo by Isaiah Rashad? They don't really count as physical release.. Has more of a bootleg :D
I love when the interviewer asked wholesome, intelligent question that a conscious musician can Vibe with and open up to. It's been hard to find good interviews that give Kendrick room to breathe properly.
What he's talking about the whole grandma situation is on Sing About Me/ Dying of thirst from his album Good Kid MAdd City. It was truly eye opening and a really brilliant segment to incorporate into his song.
5:09 there goes the introduction to DAMN. Just put the pieces together and listen to the opening of the album. Matter of fact you can pretty much say that by the start of the question being asked, the explanation Kendrick gives pretty much foreshadows the album Damn
Just wanna say these are two people who are non chalant about what the world thinks of them.you can tell by the way they carry themselves, the way they dress, and how genuinely relaxed they are Most other celebs are far too concerned with looks and prestine/edgy image that they end up not landing it all about the talent. God bless these two.The real MVPs,literally!
Alex Fraknoi theres a difference between a jazz sample on a 90s record and an album full of (mostly) original, progressive compositions of jazz flowing through entirely recorded with live instruments!
Alex Fraknoi And addin to what the other dude said, she probably was talkin about For Free? since it's a straight jazz instrumental. It's also kinda difficult to flow over them since it's hard to find the rhythm to follow
Alex Fraknoi She should have said "rap over a bebop jam" (in reference to For Free). Stuff like A Tribe Called Quest's Low End Theory comes close buts it mostly loops, which For Free was not
It is a genre L.P which perfectly represents Hip Hop of the time it was released and still about a year later.Up there with Public Enemy Takes A Nation, or NWA Str8 out of,The first 2 BDP L.P.s later ,Enter The Wu Tang, Scarface The Source or Pacs All Eyes or KW College Dropout.A classic. Please I have not left Biggys LPS out.I have saved them for last. Two brilliant examples of Timeless Hip Hop.
I think that the European interviewers are some of the best interviewers. They don't seem to ask the same questions over and over. you seem to get a sense of who Kendrick is from there questions. Great interview!!!
The most recent interviews i've seen in Paris, England, Australia. i just think that they don't do repeat questions and if they are they are more in depth.
Thnx!!!!!! Noticed after typed. I figured everyone would know that. My main point was that some of the American reports seemed redundant in the questions asked. Europe as well as Australia seem to support Kendrick as well as most artist more than they do here in America and that;s by album sales as well as concert tickets. The venues are much larger ever there than they are here!!!! Anyway this was a good interview!!!
Haven't heard people rap over Jazz? It's amazing thats he's keeping up the trend but what about ATCQ, The roots and so many others? Jazz has always been in the production
***** Anyone who has a brain Knows that A. Rock...does not suck dick lol He's talented and makes better music than most artist. His album was not better than TPAB though.
Btw rapping over Jazz is nothing new. Jazzrap exists since the beginning of rap in the 80s. A Tribe Called Quest 'The Low End Theory', Digable Planets 'Blowout Comb' or The Pharcyde 'Bizarre Ride II' (the latter being highly influential on Kendrick while making TPAB) were all done in the early 90s and lowkey do all belong in the top 50 of the greatest hip-hop albums ever.
Those records contained loops of a jazz influence. But it is an entirely different thing to rap over actual live bebop. That's what he did on for free. Loops are repetitive but a live bebop track is more urgent and spontaneous.
Jon Elder Blowout Comb is live played jazz.. And if you want more live instrumentation jazz rap from the 90s there is Guru 'Jazzmatazz' (1996) or Freestyle Fellowship 'Innercity Griots' (1993). Also sampling jazz works really really good, if not the above listed projects wouldn't be some of the best of all times. Jazzrap is nothing new, you can't really argue against facts
In the grand scheme of things, the records you named are kind of obscure in the mainstream media. Kendrick being a artist with mainstream appeal made a record that went against mainstream rules. I think that's why she said she never heard it before. It was a totally different context than normal. I wasn't trying to argue just presenting a different opinion. Sampled tracks to me don't really reflect true bebop. But nonetheless it is still dope to be able to incorporate those elements.
Jazz is deeper than embellished chords and live instrumentation. We're talking about a whole different approach to harmony, improvisation, style and even drumming. "For Free?" is an anomaly in hip hop because the composition is straight up ii-V-i turnarounds everywhere, swung rhythms, and big band horn arrangements. Yeah, A Tribe Called Quest rapped a lot about how "they got the jazz" but the characteristics are actually quite different.
+Daniel Swift How the fuck do you not even know the difference between an American accent and a British accent? You seriously need your hearing checked.
sweiland75 she seems to sound inbetween so im not sure, someone above said she is irish so you are possibly incorrect as you didn't suggest that either, there is a lot of anger in you, i think you need to relax.
Daniel Swift You must have quite a pathetic life, if you get a thrill out of making up things just to try to make people angry at you. I pity you. Good riddance.
How? Good Kid was a very mainstream album that wasn't very different to every other rappers music. Yes it is very good for the standards of mainstream but doing something which is un original isn't the best road. Section .80 was Kendrick coming out and showing what he had to show off. To Pimp a Butterfly has influenced the rap game of this very moment. His Jazz and early Pop influencers are what lots of rappers try to re create but can't do it as perfected as he did. The topics he covered were very diverse from suicide to gang life.
She's far too jumpy in her questioning. Zane was a great interviewer as he had conversations and managed to steer the artists into talking about what people wanted to hear - Annie is just straight up interrogating him and it all comes across a bit awkward
i love how chill annie is asking the questions, it feels like a nice relaxed environment
megalomaniac word!
megalomaniac +1
I love her as a radio host
It was a pure genuine interview
Kendrick Lamar, by far, realest negus alive...

Kendrick is going to be around for a long time man, like I can see him at 50 like still doing music, not just rap
Section.80 was a great album, indeed, one of the better hip-hop releases of the past years, gkmc and TPAB on the other hand are arguably the best hip-hop releases in the past years
beflygelt yeah I agree, and I prefer Scetion.80 over TPAB lol
beflygelt Section 80 was a physical release but not mass produced. I have a copy
connorreecelucas14 is that a polybag with signed CD just like the copy I own of Cilvia Demo by Isaiah Rashad? They don't really count as physical release.. Has more of a bootleg :D
Independent release from Top Dawg. 'They don't really count'. Its an actual disc from the people behind the music, behave yourself haha

Urghhh he's so beautiful and handsome! I don't know why i am so drawn to Kendrick! Haha
I love when the interviewer asked wholesome, intelligent question that a conscious musician can Vibe with and open up to. It's been hard to find good interviews that give Kendrick room to breathe properly.
Thank you Annie for bringing me this!

What he's talking about the whole grandma situation is on Sing About Me/ Dying of thirst from his album Good Kid MAdd City. It was truly eye opening and a really brilliant segment to incorporate into his song.
+IAm Exqluhsive it also explains alot of the talking scenes inbetween the album and shows they were all about the day he's friend was shot
Good Kid, M.A.A.D City & To Pimp A Butterfly are great albums.
Such a great interview! Should come up immediately when I search for Kendrick Lamar interview!
Annie Mac could whisper in my ear all day
Chill ass interview.
clicked on this interview cause it looked like kendrick was wearin a onesie in the thumbnail.
5:09 there goes the introduction to DAMN. Just put the pieces together and listen to the opening of the album. Matter of fact you can pretty much say that by the start of the question being asked, the explanation Kendrick gives pretty much foreshadows the album Damn
Some facts you're saying here 🔅🔅
He's a great soul. He has got some enlightenment.
I could listen to KDot for hours. Dope seeing Annie interview him, different questions, got a different perspective.
His voice
Just wanna say these are two people who are non chalant about what the world thinks of them.you can tell by the way they carry themselves, the way they dress, and how genuinely relaxed they are

God bless these two.The real MVPs,literally!
Kendrick is genuinely a nice guy
Kendrick wanna be a ladybug so bad
One of my if not my favorite hip-hop albums of all time
"i've never heard anyone just rap over jazz like that" -- the interviewer is def missing out on the first two decades of hip-hop
Alex Fraknoi not only that she missed Kendricks own work - Section.80 which was all Jazz rap LOL
hgewhew hewdhewr tru
Alex Fraknoi She should have said "rap over a bebop jam" (in reference to For Free). Stuff like A Tribe Called Quest's Low End Theory comes close buts it mostly loops, which For Free was not
Loving Kendrick Lamar's new music!
Me too!
King Kendrick Lamar!
His voice is so smooth
man I adore him
Love this guy ❤️
What a relaxed interview.
He has a beautiful mind ❤

I think that the European interviewers are some of the best interviewers. They don't seem to ask the same questions over and over. you seem to get a sense of who Kendrick is from there questions. Great interview!!!
Europe is too huge for you to put in a bucket like you did
The most recent interviews i've seen in Paris, England, Australia. i just think that they don't do repeat questions and if they are they are more in depth.

KING KENDRICK
great interview
what an amazing man
Around the 6:00 mark, is he referring to the prayer made in the skit of Sing about me, I'm dying of thirst?
Fangot247 pretty sure thats exactly what he was referring to..was the first thing coming to my mind as well
+Fangot247 yeah i think he is, surprised nobody seems to have noticed that
Yes. He is. The homeboy he's referring to is 'Dave' off the album. The entire story throughout the album is a true story
Anyone know where I can get that sweatshirt?
Eric Bonner-Irving I searched 'red dot bull sweat shirt' and found out it's made by D&G. Fancy. www.farfetch.com/uk/shopping/men/item11024055.aspx
How did you find that?
You the real MVP!
Partly because I'm an internet nerd and the other because I'm a saddo :D It is a nice sweat shirt tbf

Swimming Pools by Kendrick Lamar
Haven't heard people rap over Jazz? It's amazing thats he's keeping up the trend but what about ATCQ, The roots and so many others? Jazz has always been in the production
Sure, Jazz samples over hip hop beats. Not traditional swing drumming and horn arranging.

Daniel Parra good point. important point. But still, does that mean Kendrick was the first to rap over improvised jazz instrumentation?
what is her accent man is she english or american
+Daniel Swift How the fuck do you not even know the difference between an American accent and a British accent? You seriously need your hearing checked.

just wrong.

Annie are you okay?
very dope, he very talented, hopefully yall can give me a look an sub or just listen, if not its all good, just enjoy, his words and advice
She's far too jumpy in her questioning. Zane was a great interviewer as he had conversations and managed to steer the artists into talking about what people wanted to hear - Annie is just straight up interrogating him and it all comes across a bit awkward
Cal TotheT she's doing a good job by keeping the interview relaxed and more of a conversation but you're right about the jumpiness
Cal TotheT shut the fuck up
Cal TotheT he also had an hour... she got 20 mins. there's no time to fuck around.
asmr 😍
