I make this cake a lot in the summer. However, I go a step further and I make pudding when I make the cake. So, after the jello cake is done in the fridge I add a layer a vanilla pudding and then the whip topping... so it's really a jello pudding poke cake. :)
I just made this yesterday for my dad’s birthday! His mom used to make it for him when he was a little kid. :) How cool to see Josh and Ange making it a day later! 😊
Yay for poke cake! Right on for midwestern traditions. Our Michigan family loves an “orange cooler” version of this cake. Perfect for summer! Your strawberry version would be great for the 4th, with some added blueberries. 🍓🇺🇸🎆🥳
this is totally a Midwestern cake! I'm from Minnesota and this was a popular 4th of July cake. Same deal with the strawberry jello... But, we added blueberries and strawberries on top of the whipped topping into an American flag 🇺🇸

My grandmom used to always make this for birthdays!! But we called it jello cake :)
We had this cake often when I was growing up. I also remember having it at school... and I love it! We had all different flavors! Yum! 🥰
When I’ve made this cake, I’ve used a can of soda instead of water with the jello. Then “frosted” with pudding sometimes mixed with the whipped cream. I’ve made it with strawberry jello, and strawberry soda, lemon jello and lemon lime soda, orange jello and orange soda, etc. It’s really good!
I have never heard of using soda! Cool idea we will have to try!
This is my lifelong favorite cake! My mom made this for me every birthday growing up. Strawberry is my favorite but it is also yummy with other jello flavors too like orange or lime. ❤️

@@roxysmom1986 changes the flavor and consistency. It's the only frosting I've ever had on a poke cake, and the frosting is what makes this my favorite cake.
Had this cake a lot growing up. My favorite version uses lime jello.

Have you ever heard of the better than cake? Its German chocolate cake after you cook it you poke holes in it and pour condensed milk and caramel sauce on it and than top with whipped cream and crumbled butterfinger candy bars sooo good.

I was curious and googled. Jello brand designed this cake in the 70’s. Apparently poke salads with jello were a thing in the 50’s and 60’s, but popularity was winding down? Who knew?!
