In today's Masterclass, I am going to walk you through how to trade Futures on Coinbase. With this knowledge, you will now have the option to trade Bitcoin and Ethereum with leverage while also giving you the ability to Short crypto and make money as the price of Bitcoin or Ethereum falls.
Do yourself a favor, take out a pen and paper, and get ready to take notes. Futures trading is quite simple, but some intricacies are not the same as the spot market which you need to be aware of. With that said, let's dive in 🤿
Note: Coinbase Futures contracts are calculated at 0.01 per contract/ price of Bitcoin which is a nano size. Some exchanges allow a 10th of the contract as explained in the video.
❤️ Have a great day, God bless, and I'll see you in the membership!

I’ve been waiting for a decent tutorial on this (I know the one guys video you’re talking about). Glad there’s something more comprehensive. Thanks.
Great video it shows you really care about the people watching and teaching people risk management.
Can you actually show yourself trading from start to finish on futures?
Thank you, I wish you would have waited to the trading was live. Please do another one and go through it live.
Thank you very much. I have the in-dept knowledge about leverage trading but coinbase is a bit different with this, you answered all the questions i had

Thank you! I am shocked that there aren't more videos on this ... especially from Coinbase.
Thank you so much brother, this video was great at giving a very precise tutorial on using futures trading on Coinbase. This was everything someone would need to know to get started.
I'm so glad it helped! Shoot us an email at BeTradeConfident@gmail.com if you have any questions!
So in order to stop a long trade you need to set a stop limit? Or can you just cancel the order at any set time?
Can you setup a take profit and a stop limit on the same contracts? Seems like you can only protect yourself if don't plan to take profit
Nice!! Thank you!
Happy to help!

I'm also curious to know how you realize gains. Don't you have to do that first before you transfer excess funds from your futures to your spot account?
Thank you so much for the information. I'm new to crypto and got interested in this side

Hey. I love the video. Sorry if im not understanding this correctly but I have a question. Instead of adding a stop loss or limit for a short. Can i realize my p&l by going to positions and closing the position? Is that a way to complete trades or no?
Thanks so much! Apologies for the late reply. Yes, you can always choose to manually close your position. You would click over your open trade at the bottom and close it manually from there.
nice
Great video, I’m still confused with shorting/BTC. I wish I can see it done
Still not sure. 1. when should buy/sell 2. How long can you hold a contract 3. What happens if you open a position and the end of the month comes? Can I set limit orders?
1 up to u. 2 indefinitely 3 nothing 4 yes
it says will close the position for you if you leave it open until expiration, no choice. Youre saying this isnt the case?@@Brandon-nr8fn
@@Brandon-nr8fn 2- Contracts do have an expiration date. 3- the contract closes
@user-dg6vw7et7f I don't think there are futures contracts on coinbase yet.
This is crypto bro.
These markets are 24/7 this isn’t the stock market.
Another thing. If your risk management isn’t up to par.
Your pain will be magnified 24/7
So in the video you did not talk about how to liquidate positions. Sort of important?
Thx
Happy to help!
also, how do I realize gains on a short position without using a buy stop or buy limit order? do you just sell?
In a short position You have to buy in order to realize the p&l
Does Coinbase have a practice futures trading interface like think or swim had for TD ameritrade ?
Not that I'm aware of, but you can do it in TradingView!
Great timing on the tutorial -_-
This was posted in January 2024 :)
Bitcoin is pulling back before moving higher again so right now sounds like a perfect time to buy futures long on bitcoin to sell as soon as it Springs again.
Just so I'm hearing you correct I can set both limit and stop limits orders on my long position that I have already open?
Yes you can! It is called a TPSL order. Here's a link from Coinbase with more info on it: docs.cloud.coinbase.com/exchange/docs/fix-msg-oe-tpsl#:~:text=TPSL%20orders%20allow%20users%20to,closed%20with%20a%20limit%20order.
Beautiful tutorial, how do you cancel or edit an order on the futures trading, the orders have been filled but does'nt allow me to do any action. T
Thank you! This link from Coinbase should help: www.coinbase.com/learn/advanced-trading/managing-orders#:~:text=Just%20select%20the%20order%20and,that%20have%20already%20been%20filled.
I been waiting To trade futures on Coinbase
I know right? Very excited!
We can only trade future btc and etf on coinbase ??
Or many different coin can make future trade ?
Btc and eth
I am very confused about the liquidation buffer calculations they show. How do you estimate liquidation price from the numbers they present?
This is very confusing and something that I don’t feel Coinbase did a good job at. Basically, what you want to pay attention to is the “percent to liquidation” level they give you since this will show you how close you are to having the trade closed as a margin call.
Is that only available on the desk top version???
You cannot place new trades on the mobile app, but I believe you can close or cancel current trades!
@Trade Confident this is a great video, but as a new trader, I'm left with one question. When I want to start a long or a short with a stop loss, is it actually 2 separate trades that get entered? Is there any way that you could make a follow up video on Coinbase where you actually place a trade with a stop loss?
Hey there, great question! A trade consists of an entry and an exit, so its more like the second part of a trade! We don't actively trade futures so we may have to put that request on the backburner, but we will let you know if that changes!
Here's a link from Coinbase with a full description: www.coinbase.com/learn/advanced-trading/order-types
i used futures for the first time today befor ei watched this video. i had no idea if i made anything lol but i made a couple thousand!!! had to wait that contract clearing period
lol
Congrats on the win, that's awesome!
can I just close position after make a profit with the sell short? or do I have to buy long after the profit with sell short?
You can close after you place a short, you don’t have to open a long!
Great tutorial! The only thing worth nothing is the difference between Stop Price and Limit Price when setting the stop limit for the BUY, i always get confused... thanks for the video!
Thanks so much! We appreciate the feedback!
It's fascinating to observe a futures market fueled primarily by credit. It's a realm where two non-existent entities collide: credit, which represents money that doesn't yet exist, is poured into a future that is also non-existent.
That's an interesting observation, I agree!
does this charting platform have renko bricks, 15 second and 30 second charts?
We don't personally use Renko bricks. TradingView does have 15-30 second charts on their paid plans!
Is there a trading view chart that’s in sync with this Coinbase futures chart? Thx
At this time, I don't believe there are Coinbase Futures listed on TradingView. The regular Spot charts should get you pretty close though!
Is there a profit/loss calculator you recommend for trading futures?
Your profit and loss should show on your trading page!
I wanted to know if there is a way to review/calculate the profit/loss of a completed trade. The order history is missing the margin or leverage amount to determine this.
What you’ll do is calculate your starting balance in the account and then calculate any growth of loss in the account after the trade has been officially close
When you buy spot you never have to sell because you're buying crypto. With futures, do you have to sell and expiration? And if that is the case, would it be better to buy spot if you're thinking about investing long term? (1-2 years)
Thanks!
You should close your contracts before expiration. If you don’t it will settle to cash at expiration. It’s similar to options. You can also “roll” your futures contracts like option positions (for long term hold). This will trigger a taxable event however.
Coinbase allows you to place both a stop-limit order and a take-profit order simultaneously.?
Yes! It's very useful!
Is this only available on a coinbase "Pro" Paid account or the regular coinbase????
To my understanding you can use a regular coinbase account, but I would recommend verifying that before taking any trades!
I follow every steps and it really helps. Thanks so much, but I don’t see the option to trade short or long with others coinbase rather than ETH, LTC,BTC and BCH
I'm glad to hear that! Good luck in your trades! Unfortunately they don't offer much currently, but they plan to add more futures contracts as time goes on :)
Great class, you talked about how to transfer money out (i.e. cash out) from the futures acct but did not address how the money gets into the futures acct.
Thanks so much!
Do you perform dollar cost averaging for spot trades?
Yes, this our risk management strategy is built on risk management!
I just coinbase on the sol network it’s getting crazy out there guys good luck 😂
True!
Can you explain more of how trading futures work? I don't understand it works entirely. So let's say you bet its going down, and BTC tanks by 10%, can you just exit right away? Or do you have to wait until the end of the day for the final result to be determined? What does 6pm to 5pm mean? Like you can buy and sell freely during that time and its like spot trading? Please clarify.
U can exit right away. You don't have to wait until expiration
Can you get margin call on futures trading if I do not click stop loss button?
Yes, you can! Be careful when using leverage!
can you transfer from spot to futures acct or only futures to spot
I believe you can transfer funds between all Coinbase accounts, but I would double check with Coinbase support first :)
how do you know when to buy or sell to close your position
When you are comfortable with the amount of profit you've made!
why does it say futures is a view only market for me and cant place any order?
Are u using mobile?? Have to be on desktop version
no on desktop. it says join waitlist that i can't join @@worthygainz6367
If I have a contract at Friday close will it close automatically or can I hold it over the weekend like an option?
You can hold the contract until it expires!
How to get to this screen? I have a spot account but how to open futures account?
Here's a link for Coinbase Futures: www.coinbase.com/advanced-trade/crypto-futures
I would love to know how to close or stop a trade on the advantage or the futuristic manually
Shoot us an email at BeTradeConfident@gmail.com and we will do our best to help out!
Coinbase keeps cancelling my order whenever I put in a stop loss or limit order. Anybody else having the same issue?
That's weird! I would reach out to them directly to see if they can fix it.
So holding positions over the weekend is dangerous? Mine currently says I cant trade for 2 days.
He still makes videos occasionally!
Thank you! I really needed this!
So helpful, thank you
Fantastic video explanation - best I've found yet
please show us how to place order when futures market is open, we need to see how you calculate margin, leverage. Coinbase doesn't have a paper account, how are we supposed to practice?
You can use TradingView to practice paper trading!
Beginner here. Quick question…
How can I close my position on the weekend while the market is closed? Coinbase won’t give me the option to “close position”
Futures market should be open during trading hours on the weekend, except observed holidays!
Thank you. this is the only sensible video that available on youtube
Great video but can you make another one on just buy and sell ty
We have tons of videos on regular spot trading!
very good job bro! Thank you u da man! Hooked it up fat!
Will my limit to sell order be fulfilled when the market is closed on the weekend?
Unfortunately, these orders only close out while markets are open!
when do i close my future investments with coin base?
Whenever you are happy with the profit levels!
Do you buy with dollars or crypto as collateral?
We use USD for all trades!
After watching this, I went to place a short sale future trade. I placed a 2 contract market sell order at $69,490 and it said filled.
I set up a stop buy at $71,500 for my stop loss, and then a limit buy at 68,000 to take profit, and it filled!
I canceled the stop loss afterwards. How do I know how much money I made? I can’t find an answer or tutorial ANYWHERE!
I'm sorry to hear that! I would recommend reaching out to Coinbase (or whichever broker you use!), we don't want to accidently provide wrong information!
@@TradeConfident it showed my PNL at around $29… does that low of a dollar value track with the amount of $ I put up originally? I thought I would’ve made more money, but it was only 2 contracts and price didn’t move that much so maybe not? Haha, guesses/predictions are fine I won’t hold you to whatever you may guess
Man got my mortgage in his coinbase balance and hes still doing youtube tutorials i hate this guy😭 much love
Lol! Thanks for watching!
Can you do a short update now that’s available on the mobile version? Don’t need all the technicals but going about interface would be nice
I've sent this request up the chain!
what if the trade is open during the break? can you close the trade during the break?
You can not. The break doesn’t allow any trading until the break is over at 3pm PT
@@TradeConfident That is important to know. thanks
Had a question for you, when you deposit money back into your back account do you keep it under 10,000$ to avoid the transaction being reported to IRS?
its reported to the irs regardless its connected to your ssn
The question is where do you type the price on STOP PRICE or LIMIT PRICE...?
I'm not quite sure what you mean, could you send us an email at BeTradeConfident@gmail.com so we can ask some clarifying questions? We look forward to hearing back!
Excellent tutorial
what ticker for coinbase futures..is it BTCUSD or BTCUSD.????
You want to use BTC but use the top contract that most recent contract it shows you.
Can you trade eth/usd as leberage?
Yes you can!
