    Hungarian had the same tactic of feigned attacks and retreats to hide the flanking attack with horse archers 300 years earlier when they pillaged the west ... but then they lost the battle at Lech (Augsburg) and most of their troops and after that the light cavalry was abandoned and they adapted the German style heavy cavalry. It was tragic that they lost to the same tactic they once mastered. The mongol invasion was stopped by Hungary that was practically destroyed in 1241 ... same way Hungary held up the Ottomans for 150 years until they were finally crushed at Vienna in 1683 and then gradually pushed out of Europe. Hungary was the shield that protected Europe and civilization and when the time came after WW1 for Europe to remember this they threw Hungary in the gutter.

    When you think about it, Eastern Europe was constantly under attacks from Asia (Huns, Avars, Magyars, Mongols, Turks, etc...) due to its wide open space. Being constantly chased means being poor.

    The Mongol tactics were amazing... that's how they conquered the world. Most of the people think that they simply flooded every battle with huge numbers. Not the case, in most of them they were in inferiority. That "escape path" was used with great effect in many battles. Anyway, there is an ongoing discussion of why the Mongols left Hungary.. because they never actually reached as far back as Mongolia.
    As for the beginning, it's far from certain they could have conquered all of Europe, at least not immediately. The Western Europe was far more fortified.... it would have taken a lot of time to conquer each fort and city. Not to mention that they really did lose a battle in Central Europe.

    • @pugilist102
      @pugilist102 7 лет назад +9

      Forts only require time to siege and starve out the defenders. The terror tactic of annihilating an entire city would've caused many cities/forts to surrender. The Mongols had to be removed from the field, in another words, crushed in battle. Given their track record and the fact that the Mongols destroyed far more powerful, populous, wealthy and technologically advanced civilizations gives little reason to think that all of Europe would not be conquered.

      Tatar is another name for Mongols. Europeans knew about Mongols long before Genghiskhaan. Europeans named Mongols as Tatars. Chinese brought the naming through Silk Road to the West. Recently, the fact is proved by a note of Chinese diplomat from Southern Sun dynasty. The diplomat Huan Zhou visited Great Mongolian Empire in 1230s during Great Khaan Ugeedei. And he surprised at one thing and wrote like this "These days, Tatars no longer call themselves as Tatars, instead they are calling themselves as Mongols." Mainstream Chinese did not bother to differentiate Mongolian tribal associations by naming them Tatars, Mongols, Kereits, Naimans, Mergeds, etc.. Instead, they tagged them as Tatars, which was closest Mongol tribal association to Beijing.

    • @dorjbayar1286
      @dorjbayar1286 7 лет назад

      Ironically, this misnomer mistake is made by Mongols also. They name their southern neighbor Chinese as Kitad (plural) or Kitan. But this is a Mongolian nation which conquered North China few hundred years before Genghiskhaan. Even Russians use this misnomer to refer Chinese these days.

    the mongols out-strategised the enemy in most of their battles, with a lot fewer casualities than the opposing army. Chinggis khan the great leader was a genious in the art of war, he had close relationships with the leaders within the ranking of mongol army and he taught them well, and they are all generaly good fighters. Mongol men become worriors at the age of 16, getting multiple horses and continuing the training to join the military. They were all geniouses of war.

    what the hungarians should have done is cut off all choke points. Mongol horse archers are devistating in open fields as they can simply run if a charge starts, and move in when a route is present. What horse archers suck at however is taking vital objective points.
    Think about it, if the horse archers prime directive is to run away when attacked then they do not advance very fast, if at all. closing the choke points would mean the hungarians could hold off almost indefinately as long as their shields were thick and their archers were true.

    As the Hungarians I would have committed part of the army to hold the bridge while I focused all of my attention on one of the armies crossing the river with speed and determination, after having completely eliminated them, I would have then focused my attention on the remaining mongol forces and wiped them out. Hungarians fucked up, but I assume they weren't so proficient in warfare as the Mongols.

    • @lennartmeyerstenfjeld9473

      The Hungarians didn't know the Mongols were fording the river in other locations. They didn't have this graphic that showed them how the enemy was maneuvering at every step. It's easy to be a general when you have perfect information.

    • @TheLandOfTears
      @TheLandOfTears 7 лет назад

      Okay fine, I will take back my earlier criticism, but still... even though they had no way of knowing where the mongols were going to appear from, couldn't they have made fortifications?
      The Romans used to make fortifications all the time, for example Caesar with his battle against vercingetorix, he made himself well fortified, and he did not make one fortification, but two, from the front and back. I am sure the Hungarian nobles or army commanders must have studied some history about warfare, otherwise wtf?

    • @herrerasauro7429
      @herrerasauro7429 7 лет назад

      First, this is a battle, at most you can make makeshift fortications, like trenches, spikes and palisades. In Caesar's case againt Vercingetorix he was laying a siege, so he had a lot more time to build.
      Another big difference is Roman armies were professional soldiers, he had pretty well trained soldiers in all manners of warfare not just the fighting, so they were well versed in foraging and building campaign structures. In this battle, most of the hungarian army, as most medieval armies were levied troops who can't match the structure of campaigning of a professional roman army.
      And last, leaving freedom of movement against the mongols was exactly their plan, they had siege weapons and were mostly a mobile and ranged force, so campaign structures would be mostly detrimental to the hungarians, because they would just be sitting ducks (as in fact they were in their encirclement).

    • @TheLandOfTears

      The Mongol camp location was unknown as the vid mentioned. Actually, they don't need a camp.
      With four horses per person, Mongol transported materials by horse and drank the horses' milk for food. And horse only needs grass.
      Mongolians are unable to invade Western Europe because of lack of grassland and the dead of leader in Beijing. So they returned and fought internally for the crown of Emperor.

    This is total bullshit the medieval hungarian army couldn't produce more then 50 000 at the high og it's peak in the 1400... King Bela only had 20 000 or less soldiers with him in Muhi. THe mongol army was 100 000 strong when they started invading Poland and Hungary.

    Everything considered, Subetei is lucky he did not face a more experienced commander with better trained troops.. Alexander would not have made the same mistakes.

      The Hungarian General did his best, but was let down by his untrained troops, trying to flee which Alexander would never have permitted. In fact, Alexander would have: 1. Sent out scouts to check both for the enemy and more importantly to guard the river, 2. He would never have concentrated all his troops in a tight, enclosed area, and 3. If trapped in a defensive position would have again concentrated on breaking through the encirclement, probably with all his cavalry. Bottom line, generalship is not about numbers or weapons but about instinctively realizing what the enemy is up to, where his vulnerabilities are and taking advantage of them. Plus you must always control your troops.

      but still there is many holes in that strategy its not easy to suspect that enemy split their troop in two group even by sending scouts cuz there was big distance from each group and like i said before it was an ambush and secondly what defensive position could have been better okay the famous wedge position of Alexander in front phalanx and then heavy cavalry but remember the Mongol army specialized with armor-piercing arrows and also catapults as mention in video they can easily adjust in any position so they will crush the very first section which is the most important part of the enemies army Alexander is very smart man so might scatter his strong troops from arrows and boulders but it will lead to disaster obviously, but if he tries to break the siege by all his force then other Mongol army will backfire him from behind, Mongol army use terror by making dummies on horse so they army would look much bigger so Alexander might get problem since he will try to find weak or strong spot and Mongols can easily retreat their group of soldiers which Alexander choose to break and they can make illusion of defeat and by this method they can easily make their enemy in their favorable position to ambush, Its the main and tricky strategic of Mongol army.

      He invaded old Russia in winter, the Khwarezmia Islamic empire, the Xi Xia and the Jins of China which were the most advanced military forces of their days. Hungary and Europe were minor league in comparison.

      Kenneth N. Shortlidge lol alexander had mostly just infantry his army would be divided and crushed by the out speeding, out flanking, out manuvering army and made up of mixed cavalry, even worse this battle was during night time.

      Read up on the Battle of Jaxartes, Alexander was no fool, he understood the fighting styles of the nomadic cavalry.
