    This video is SUPER and people with animal companions need to see it! The more that an animal trusts and respects a handler, the more likely they are to listen and relax. I've found that a gentle tone and confidence are very effective in communicating with dogs (probably other animals too). There's no reason to boss an animal around when we can get results by being kind :) I always like to end a training session with my dog's favorite command so he can feel confident and happy with what he's doing.

    Great video, Jessi! I cared for my aunts horse last summer and completely underestimated the importance of a turnover procedure. I feel like so many mistakes were made, both on my own and my aunts side, that led to confusion and I deeply regret it. First of all, the relationship between the horse and my aunt was still very new and she only cared for and trained it for a few months. Second of all, me helping out for a couple of weekends only was NOT enough time to build a good connection with the horse when it was my time to care for it. And third of all, I felt like the horse did not understand my attempts at communication and trust building, which led to a lot of confusion and even anxiety. I wish I watched a video like this before deciding that I knew enough to care for the horse.

    My golden retriever knows sit, stay, down, shake, and leave it. Sometimes when I tell him to do something (especially if I’m teaching him something new) he just cycles through his old commands - I don’t think he knows the words I’m saying, he’s just a good guesser :) he’s very sweet and tries (and doesn’t get frustrated by training easily) but is not that smart!

    This video was so helpful! I work in dog training both dog training and zoo training and behavior and being able to switch between trainers is so essential! Whether it be between family members or between keepers. How do you communicate/record training sessions? Is it just verbally or do you keep written records?

    What do you use for training a chinchilla? Everything I’ve read says you should limit treats, like only one or two a day. But how do you train with only two treats a day? There’s a lot of contradictions on the internet about nutrition for them.

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  5 лет назад +1

      I've trained chinchillas with one raisin per day, cut into 8 pieces. So 2 training sessions each day with 4 opportunities to give a reinforcement. Planning, precise communication, and patience are the key to success with them. Good luck and have fun!

    Training a pigeon that does not go for treats or food as a reward. Plus no toughing as a reward. Two things easy to win the animal trust would not work. Took two years to unlock a way to get my bird to something... Anything actually and suddenly it happen

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  5 лет назад

      Please take her to a vet to get her some help. She can't fix her wing on her own and you could cause more damage if you don't know what you're doing. She's most likely in extreme pain. I hope it goes well and she's back to herself soon!
