  • Welcome to my channel! I am kicking off a brand new movie reaction watching Hacksaw Ridge for the first time. I always thought that war movies were not for me but this one has definitely changed my outlook. One of the best movies I have ever seen! I was not prepared for what I was about to watch, that is for sure!

My father was a 18-year old german soldier fighting in Aachen against the allies. They had agreed with the Americans that medical personal would not be fired at nor taken prisoner. One day an american paramedic brought an wounded Geman to their lines. When they told him, he could back to his side he refused. The man said "I´m not going back, i surrender. I´ve seen enough for one lifetime!" Great and emotional reaction, by the way!

My grandfather's brother traded his rifle for the red cross, and fought up through Italy. He said the average german troop respected the cross, SS not so much.

    • @MC_605
      @MC_605 Год назад

Little did he know surrendering most likely means he would end up in the hands of the ss at a pow camp and see even more of the horrors of ww2.

    • @lanzknecht8599

@@MC_605 The german POW-camps weren´t run by the SS. The british and american POWs were treated according the Geneva Convention on Prisoners of War. The death rate of Americans held by Germany was 1.19% (held by Japan about 33%). So most likely this man will have survived his captivity.

Good job. The actions of Desmond Doss are just amazing. Not a selfish bone in his body. He only cared about helping and saving the lives of others in the face of absolute horror. Amazing man.

Desmond was in incredible human being. We need more of him. I recommend you watch these films:
13 hours the secret soldiers of Benghazi
    The outpost
    The hurt locker
    American sniper
    Patriots day
    Zero dark thirty
    We were soldiers
    Saving private ryan
    The thin red line
    Platoon
    Full metal jacket

    More facts!
    3. Doss was one of the guys who helped attach the cargo nets to the escarpment. He did this numerous times because the real Japanese soldiers, unlike those portrayed in the movie, knew that it was much harder for the US to get up there every day if they just CUT THE NETS DOWN WHEN THE AMERICANS WERE ASLEEP.
    4. 75 is actually just a compromise. Doss claimed that he lowered 50 men or less, but the surviving members of his unit insisted it was well over a hundred, not including the men who weren't wounded badly enough to need a lower via rope bra and got themselves down, or were too disoriented to know which way to crawl. Gibson and the Doss family agreed to split the difference.
    5. Doss earned the respect of his company while still in basic training, long before they entered the Pacific theater. He WAS resented at first, --- They thought that he got a free pass for Saturdays off, but as most of them were off-camp, Doss was taking double duties on Sundays among other things --- but that changed when they went on those 20 mile hikes in full gear. They had assumed that since he wasn't carrying weapons or ammo, he would have it much easier than everybody else....except it turned out to be the exact opposite. His medical gear was much, much heavier. At the end of the hikes, just about all of them had blisters on the soles of their feet, including Doss. However, he made his way through the entire company, treating their blisters before tending to his own. They called him "Preach"
6.) Gibson had to tone down the heroics. Even HE thought audiences wouldn't buy it because half of it was "over the top."
7.) Gibson got a 10 minute standing ovation when this film premiered.
Addendum - Doss was awarded SIXTEEN separate times for heroic actions on the battlefield, courage under fire, and exemplary conduct. One of them specifically for bitchslapping a live grenade. The movie text state that the Medal of Honor Doss received is America's highest award for courage under fire, and let me clarify that it takes an ACT OF CONGRESS to earn that and since its creation during the Civil War, less than 4000 people have been so honored. Doss is one of only THREE conscientious objectors to be awarded this.
Anyone who somehow thinks the US Government would give this to a coward is either being ignorant on purpose, or does not understand what the word "courage" means. Or both. I'm going to say both.

My dad had me when he was older. A ww2 hero, he fought the Japanese. He was shot through and through the spleen. He stuffed the holes and patched himself up on the battlefield and kept fighting until the battle was over. He said no way he was gonna wait for a medic or stretcher to get him off the battlefield. No way he was going to be caught by the Japanese. He told me a few stories of their brutality.

Of all the talented filmmakers there are in the world, only Mel Gibson has been blessed with such a sheer amount of talent that it is even enough to make a movie about a Christian that is celebrated even by atheists, anti-theists, Muslims and other people who otherwise don't really have anything to do with Christianity and don't want so see films about people with this faith.
If you're generally interrested in his work, I would recommend "Apocalypto" (2006), which is also an awesome Movie.

Look for a movie called “So Proudly We Hail”. It’s about the army nurse corp at the beginning of WWII. The scrip was based on the actual diaries of the nurses and had the head nurse as a consultant on the film. It leaves you with survivors guilt.

It is hard to top HACKSAW RIDGE. It is one of my top ten favorites too. But if you are interested in seeing some other, inspiring, emotionally charged, true story war movies that are comparable to it in terms sheer heroism, below are 5 that, I think, will also blow you away.
    BRAVEHEART
    GLORY
    SERGEANT YORK
    SPARTACUS
    WE WERE SOLDIERS
And to that list I would also add 3 more true stories: JFK, SCHINDLER'S LIST and AMISTAD. They are not war movies but they are just as powerful.

It may interest you to know that it took nearly 9hours to find his bible and his brothers in arms would not rest till they found it other battalions joined in the search because of what he did for them all. Doss was also at the time of hacksaw ridge had tuberculosis to which he later lost a lung so he had to stiffle his coughing so as not to give away his location while finding injured soldiers. As u also saw he was a vegetarian but due to the food mainly consisting of meat he was surviving on crackers and water so he was so weak when all this happened but by the grace of God he was able to do what he did. According to company records it was around 150 that he saved including Japanese soldiers but he was a very humble man and asked for just 50 when he recieved his medal of honour so they compromised and said 75. He also received the bronze star for lives he saved in previous battles in the Pacific as already seen action before hacksaw ridge, so the actual number of lives he saved was around 300. His father also received the bronze star for lives he saved in WW1 too but tragically he was unable to save his friends.
Mel Gibson had to leave so much out of his story as there is so much more but it was thought nobody would believe any of it if they included it all. I would definitely recommend his autobiography as his story is absolutely mind blowing, honestly if u are going to read or listen to a autobiography I would recommend his. Such an amazing human being.

No offense as I was a soldier deployed to Iraq and really have trouble explaining to people what war fear is, how to embrace it and do your duty. One has to almost completely surrender that sympathetic element to one's demeanor, you must believe that your mission is the moral one over the convictions of the enemy. SO imagine coming back home trying to fit right back in when most people are so carefree and do not know the true nature of existence on planet Earth, where evil STILL exists. So when you first began with your video if you watch it again, you have this wonderful yet naive excitement to watch the movie, looking for your snack and so on. Again, not an insult, just the cushy soft underbelly of life in a developed world where freedoms are really taken for granted (while half the rest of hte world fights for clean drinking water for example). When I saw your opening my immediate thought was, "wow, this girl is in for a shocker! I'm sure her tasty treat will be relegated to the side as the severity of this story comes into play...).
Your reaction however was PERFECT! This is why I bother watching reactions to these true life storied films, because one should see a mostly innocent carefree reaction turn into tears, agony and sympathy for what true human sacrifice looks like.
    Good job! Enjoy your channel.

Mel Gibson movies are great and extremely violent and beautiful. Most are based on true events or true story. This, passion of the Christ, Braveheart, Once we were Soldiers, but not Blackhawk Down tho some people think so. His main writer/producer is a descendant of William Wallace!😮😮😮 I would put this up there with 13 hours, Lone Survivor, once we were Soldiers, Blackhawk Down, Fury, Dunkirk,1917, American Sniper, hamburger Hill. Maybe the greatest soldier ever lived, this guy or Roy Benevides. In Vietnam, the Lazarus Soldier! I met him once in the early 90s when I was stationed at Bragg. Watch his video here, Roy Benevides Lazarus Soldier! U can also watch videos here of Sgt York, Audey Murphy, Chris Kyle, Carlos Hathcock.
