  • Ah yes. Stockings hung above the chimney, snow on the ground, rampant Steam sales draining my wallet. It’s that time of the year folks. It’s time to talk about gaming in the context of pro-wrestling. Get cozy for this one, we’re talking about storytelling through combat systems and through choice of offense. I think this one might be something special.

Howdy! In case you were thinking there are some.... *unusual editing choices* regarding some of the wrestling clips in this video, that's because there are! WWE decided that even though I've been throwing money at them my entire life, that they needed to gift me with some copyright claims for a few 10 second clips in this video and block the whole thing worldwide....
    Thank you WWE.
So to make this thing visible, a few clips needed to be tweaked. I'm sure you understand. Fingers crossed it stays live.

The greatest video game combat sequence telling a story I have seen was the last fight in Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 where you go through the history of Naruto and Sasuke's history as they change fighting in different periods in their life: when they were kids, teens, and adults, in every one of their battles throughout the years.
One of the most inventive storytelling devices I have seen in a video game.

Copyrights do not matter as your love for WWE world is all rampart trough the entire video. Just like Super Eyepatch Wolf does, you should too talk more about stuff you like and enjoy. Every video that you talk about what you love is better by just being that and you have enough skills and experience to sell it to us who otherwise wouldn't care. Even if the video is different style or is way too long, if you love it, you will make it good because you are passionate about it.

    • @Aflay1
      @Aflay1 3 года назад +8

Undertake was inspired by the kingpin of games that use combat to narrate the story, Earthbound, so naturally, the entire game is an example of this principle.
It is interesting to see this in other games, however. I often think the combat in Undertale very on-the-nose. The fourth wall breaks, the way the story centers around your choices so voraciously...it’s not bad, but it’s great to see examples that aren’t so self-centered.
If we are looking at great examples of games that are self-centered and use combat to narrate the story, the modern day Legend of Zelda games do a great job at that, particularly Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Those games are worth checking out if you want to _feel_ the intensity of combat, and the growth of Link, a mute character that expresses little personality
[for reference, he is the hero of “courage” and the GameCube Zelda’s often depict them as helpless, forced to sneak around, and pitted against difficult enemies with wooden weapons at the beginning.]

  • @TheOobo

The final battle in Shovel Knight is a great example of what you're looking for. From the very beginning we're told that Shovel Knight and Shield Knight were partners, two halves of a whole. Throughout the adventure, you see Shovel Knight's sadness with being alone and his determination to rescue his partner.
Finally, the final boss happens, you've rescued Shield knight and face the Enchantress together. Some attack patterns are impossible to dodge, but you can hide behind Shield Knight as she blocks the attack. You can't reach the Enchantress on your own, but you can bounce off Shield Knight's shield to get enough height and land a hit. Both offensively and defensively, you can't do it on your own, but you can working together with your partner. The team is back together at long last, and it feels SO DAMN GOOD.
There's also some really neat musical motifs emphasizing this point. Shield Knight has a melody that shows up whenever Shovel Knight is thinking about her, mostly in the campfire scenes where he dreams of rescuing her. It's slow, melancholic, and almost like mourning. The final boss music, when you've reunited, uses her theme as the main melody, but it's faster, more bright-sounding, and ornamented: she's back!

    • @jon9828
      @jon9828 3 года назад +18

@@ninja_tony the game has plenty more good moments. If one REALLY has bastion marked and don't want spoilers then you'll stop reading as soon as the name comes up in this context.
I believe the average person has enough self control to do that if they really want to. Each and every one of us can't be responsible for what anyone else chooses to read. I didn't spoiler tag my particular reply since I give people enough credit that I believe they can figure out the replies might contain spoilers and control themselves.
Besides, how much spoilers affect your enjoyment of a narrative is largely personal anyway.
Original comment is a little more understandable as a spoiler to be frustrated with. But once I read "ending of Bastion" I would have stopped reading if intended to play it.
Besides, as I said, the game has plenty more moments that fall within the purview of video anyway. The game isn't ruined by having a pivotal moment partially spoiled.
TLDR: I, and original commenter, can't be held responsible for what every reader chooses to read. Some responsibility has to be taken by exercising some self control on part of the reader. Story has plenty more going for it, not ruined by any stretch.

My "magnum opus" would definitely be the final confrontation between Madeline and the part of her in Celeste. The simple fact that you've gone from being chased to doing the chasing shows how much Madeline has learned and grown throughout the narrative. The level design is set up to encourage you to avoid attacks without losing momentum (one good example would be a point where you're using the feather to fly forward and quickly dodge right past a laser) so you understand Madeline's determination and the part of her's fear and anger.

He is the only boss in the game which can be parried, and on almost all attacks too. He isn't any smaller than Ornstein or Artorias, his sword is huge, but his strikes can be knocked aside, with a fist if you so please. His strikes are clearly telegraphed, which makes parrying easier, and even if you don't parry, it's somewhat easier to dodge them.
His health pool is also rather manageable: compare his 4,185 HP to Seath's 5,525, despite identical physical resistances and Seath having wide-area Curse attacks. The Four Kings' shared health bar has 9,504.
All in all, I found all of the Lord Souls Bosses harder than him.

This made me think about my favorite quest in Oblivion, Specifically the Shivering Isles. Addiction, with the Felldew. You have to take some to start the quest and it drastically boosts your stats, you are cutting through enemies easier then before, then after 45 seconds the effects start to where off, then withdrawal sets in, your stats start going down every 45 seconds. You slow down, your hits do way less dammage. That is until you get another hit of Felldew. It brings your stats right back up. As you go through the dungeon Felldew becomes scarcer and scarcer, you are needing to hoar it and only use it when you need it, because you will. It is a great metaphor for addiction, that is the name of the quest after all. This completely blew me away the first time I encountered it.

I won't outright say it was better then (but it was, we all know it was lol), but it truly was the peak of wrestling for a lot of us that grew up with it, and the best starting point for anyone new to it. Especially the Attitude era of the WWF, including Stone Cold, The Undertaker and Mankind, D-Generation X, pretty much the entire mid to late 90's was a magical time for wrestling fans. And then at the same time in the WCW, you had the beginning of the NWO, Sting, Diamond Dallas Page, the return of Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage. Things were so crazy then between the two organizations that it was dubbed the "Monday Night Wars" because both programs were on at the same time (and since it was pre-DVR days, we all had to either tape one or flip back and forth during commercials and pray we didn't miss anything lol.)
There are still some fantastic wrestlers in the WWE now as well, but it just feels like an entirely different world I guess. There's less drama, and a lot of changes were made to make wrestling more "child friendly", which is funny because every kid I knew in the 90's was a huge wrestling fan, and we MOSTLY turned out ok lmao. But at the same time, wrestlers today are some of the most technically skilled we've ever seen as well, and perform some incredible moves with crazy precision.
There's also All Elite Wrestling, which is a new promotion but was started by someone who has strong family ties in the wrestling world, and has been recruiting some major names from the old WCW days. And there's New Japan Pro Wrestling, which has been around since the 70's, and has been sort of a training ground for a lot of up and coming wrestlers that eventually went on to become superstars in the WCW and WWE. Interestingly enough, the door swings both ways I guess, because a lot of superstars go back to NJPW after making it big as well, so you have a ton of great talent at the top AND bottom of the promotion, which is awesome.
Wow, I can't believe I typed all that, I don't even watch wrestling as much these days as I would like, but it's something I'll always be passionate about. Growing up with it in the 90's, it was such a big part of my childhood, and just thinking about it brings back so many awesome memories! Anyway, whether you decide to just dabble a bit in it, or throw yourself head first into it and become a wrestling superfan, I hope you enjoy it! I think the one thing that's better than wrestling itself is the community around it. Most fanbases are so toxic and just...icky these days, but most wrestling fans are super cool, and will be excited to chat all day about their favorite wrestlers and the stories behind them lol. Have fun!

Awesome video as always. I'm so glad you commented on the importance and emotion of Shawn Michaels hesitating to perform his finisher on Ric Flair. Ric was one of Shawn's idols and heroes, and it was a heartbreaking moment in wrestling history, for both of those men and for the fans. Because we all knew it was the end of a legend, and that Ric Flair was retiring that night. Shawn Michaels had such a deep love and respect for his opponent, and that moment of hesitation and reflection on the man's career was incredibly touching. There are a lot of memorable moments in wrestling history, like the first hell in a cell match between the Undertaker and Mankind, the night Sting returned in his now famous "Crow" attire and makeup, and many more. But this moment was one of the saddest and most emotional.

Not exactly combat systems, but I'm a big fan of games like Dark Souls or Celeste that have messages of perseverance and personal accomplishment against depression and hopelessness(going 'hollow' in Dark Souls terms).
And it's equally story and music driven, but I LOVE(ha) the parallels between Asgore's fight and Toriel's fight in Undertale, how Asgore's theme is mostly significant preexisting songs rearranged into a medley, how he uses attacks Toriel did, and how if you use the butterscotch pie from the start of the game in the fight his stats get lowered(and how him being the final boss of the full game makes it a book ends for the people who played the Undertale demo back when it came out that ended with Toriel's fight in the Ruins)

This video had eerily perfect timing, are you spying on me?!?
Crazy coincidence how just yesterday I was replaying undertale, and thought about how nice it was that Asriel’s attacks get weaker and how well that communicates his hesitation to attack you without the need for any dialogue or a cutscene. I had to stop and give this video a like immediately when you mentioned Toriel doing the same thing!
I pondered a bit about why we don’t really see It often and realized it introduces a bit of a barrier of entry, though. As maybe someone with less “video game literacy” wouldn’t quite understand what it’s supposed to mean. I might wrong, but I don’t think this kind of combat story telling is intuitive for everyone, just like I wouldn’t have had any idea those wrestling moves were throwbacks if you hadn’t told me. So as much as I love it, I understand developers might be careful with using mechanics as a storytelling medium for the sake of broader accessibility. It’s very hard to strike a good balance when it comes to that.
Love your channel, thank you for reading my mind and making a video on a topic literally the day after I thought about it!

The final fight in MGS4, I know it’s not everyone’s favourite. But it exemplifies exactly what you’re looking for by the end of the video, it brings back up, every mechanic, music, sounds, health bars of the games previous to it.
    Masterclass.

  • @KingDom.mp3
    @KingDom.mp3 3 года назад +9

Tekken 7 holds a masterclass for this topic in it's story from start to end. Not every interaction is a home run and the narrator has become kind of a meme for how bad he is, but the actual fights with story elements are exactly like what you speak about in this video.
Playing as 7 year old Kazyua fighting his grown father where every attack barely does chip damage and no hit stun makes you feel the struggle of how unfair a fight Kazuya is in.
Fast forward later to the fight with older Kazuya and Heihachi in the dojo, when the Jack robots start flying in and flashbacks to Tekken 5 start overlapping by cchanging the colouring of the frame, the Hud, the names of the characters, is all good fan service but also narratively conveys how history keeps repeating itself for the mishima family.
And then there's my favourite example of this towards the end of the game where Heihachi holds his final stand against Kazuya.
The game gives you super armour but the game intends you to barely win so it gives Heihachi very little health at the outset of the match. In Tekken 7 they introduced a mechanic where if two attacks are about to trade and one player has low health, the game will slow down and zoom in on the attacks to add suspence because the attack that connects could be a decisive moment in the match. When applied to the story fight with Kazuya and Heihachi the slow-mo effect is triggered by almost every single trade and because of Heihachi's super armour state, even if he does get hit, he can still tank really strong hits that would normally kill without the armour. This moment really makes you believe in Heihachi's stubborness to stay alive and fight Kazuya who at this point is narratively several times stronger than Heihachi at this point.
It is the best last stand moment I've seen in gaming and I love it :)

I gotta tell you, man this video was moving to me. As someone who often tries to draw parallels between forms of media in storytelling methods. Wrestling has long been a love in my life and much like you I see the in-ring storytelling as something powerful and riveting.
One powerful and unique story from recent years I look to very often is Seth Rollins vs The Fiend al Hell in a Cell. I know this isn't the most beloved match in the world, but it's one I might look to make into a video sometime myself. As for me, that story is that of dissension into madness for Rollins, the dissent that while he could put away the beast, a king, and every other challenger, the guy simply couldn't put away the evil within.
Articulated through his actions which led to the controversial ending, but annunciated a deeper narrative. It was called off as a no-contest meaning neither man had won. However, it's with the utmost certainty that I can say Seth lost in this match. He went on to lose the title and of course adopted the Messiah gimmick following this. Giving in to a darker side, and showing the full transgression into his now twisted persona.
Again, thank you for making this video! It was an absolutely lovely watch and I look forward to more from you! :D

Oh, and because I forgot: a battle that I thought was great at storytelling through its battle mechanics. The final fight in The Last of Us Part 2. Even you as the player don't want it to happen, you want it to end but you know it won't until finally the futility of this personal war is realized or until death claims one or both of these people. They're both weak, exhausted, tired, and they're both desperate and it's shown by their actions.
Not to mention that both characters have separate combat styles that reflect their strengths and weaknesses. That's my two cents. Thanks again, man. Stay safe this holiday season.

YO excellent stuff as usual. I’ve been thinking of examples of games doing this, and I think I have a good one.
The ending of MGS3 (as in the last moment of gameplay before long ending cutscene) does some really interesting storytelling with the mechanics. Without spoiling too much, you’re challenged to a round of russian roulette, 2 guns, 1 bullet. Depending on whether or not you choose the right gun and depending on what you decide to do with it in the final moment, the game has 4 different endings that each have a different meaning, which is really really cool.
Looking forward to your personality videos next year man, happy holidays 👏

Nier autamota does this very well, there is a boss who gains levels as you fight it where as the levels have always been stationary for enemies beforehand, also enemies in large droves begin not attacking you. But it's at a point when you could be very in the flow, and makes you feel bad as you slowly realize they aren't putting up a fight and have the ability to talk to the enemies, with names like "hopeful amusement park assistant" it was such a powerful moment in combat story telling, highly recommend playing nier

I always say Dragon's Dogma has a very cool narrative that comes full circle. One of the 2 scenes that always stick to me were; when the main city gets attacked by a Cockatrice, you actually have clues spread around before that quest that points to it being a trap, including the chance to run into some guards outside the city carrying the "body" of the monster to the king as a trophy.
And the second one is when to characters are fighting, one is a spy and the other one has been betrayed, the second one tells you not to interrupt the duel, and you can just sit back and watch their dialogue fueled fight, the spy fights with no remorse and the other character hesitates thanks to the shock of the betrayal. And of course you can interrupt them to help the second person, who berates you for soiling their honor (and can result on the death of the spy).
An amazing game that often gets overlooked.

I'd like to put forward the final "fight" of Jedi: Fallen Order. When Darth Vader rocks in, you realize how weak you are in the grand scheme of Star Wars. You attempt to lock sabers with him and he immediately overpowers you and picks you up by the throat. You pull the pipes and ceiling down on him in desperation, but he just stops them without even needing to look. After you wiggle out of his grasp, he chases you through the facility, pulling walkways and hallways out from under and around you. If he catches he up to you during this sequence, he instantly kills you with no chance of struggling again. When you finally make it to the end, the only that stops Vader is the fact that you broke the tube you're in that's surrounded by ocean, letting in a torrent of water. Holding back the water takes all of Vader's concentration, so he *let's you go*. You didn't win, you survived.

Final Boss Battle of MGS4. Each phase of the fight reflecting not just each of the games stories but the characters personality and philosophy of fighting at that time as well. It's possibly one of the best moments in videogames tbh. Despite the whole game not being of the same quality this boss battle reflected everything that made the series great and brought out all the emotions through its gameplay (as well what they say during it). Phase 1 our main hero Solid Snake readys his basic cqc stance when he was younger. Ocelot taunting and putting on more of a show than a fight. Your normal combo is no longer the grounded Old Snake style but his springy and athletic seeing him pulling off his old signature spin kicks and cqc holds. Ocelot doesn't really fight you here but invites you to hit him as he keeps taunting. When he puts you into a choke hold and you fail the grab break he doesn't finish you but instead kisses your head and laughs at you. Phase 2 kicks in and he's now more ruthless. No longer letting you get free from failed counters but instead eating big damage and no longer giving you free hits. I can go on and on but if you haven't seen that Boss battle please watch it is the best way to end the series

It can be difficult to pull off in a video game since combat functions so much differently than a scripted event. I think one of the most effective mechanics for conveying things is the partner pickup when they are downed. It continually reinforces that someone has your back and is always there for you. In borderlands 1 your screen would fade in and out as you were down and I distinctly remember Roland running across the arena to pick me up as the light faded.

shawn michaels, one of the best wrestlers to ever lace up a pair of boots. wrestling is truly special, and there isn't any thing like it in the world. its like a show that never ends, you follow characters throughout there entire lives instead of one show. there a feeling of competitiveness, larger than life characters, and moments you'll never forget. while i do agree that combat is an important part of the sport, i think that there is something that is even more powerful, the entrance. the entrance, if used correctly ca make or break a wrestler as we know it, hell bobby roode even got over because of his entrance song. that faithful summerslam when the fiend came out for the first time, there was nothing like it, the song, the outfit, the crowds retain, and even the little things like the animated name card is what made the fiend, and was essential to his success. think about it , do you really remember triple Hs move set, or his iconic entrance and songs. i think that your first impression of a wrestler, with there entrance is by far the most important aspect of a wrestler that most don't even realize, and, if someone comes along and uses the entrance properly, then i think they could be one of the best wrestlers the world has ever seen, since the first impressions that you give to someone both before a match for the people at home and the crowd, can really set a great tone for the rest of the match. and daryl, for the wrestling video next year, i think that the entrance would be a great topic point, as video games do this so well as well, with floweys boss fight entrance, as well as the idea of the boss fight entrance in general compared to wrestlers entrances, could be a great topic point for next years video. and if you need any help, i could always help you out :)
-buff (god i really hope you see this it took so long to write lol)

Trails in the Sky FC, the battle against Lorence, and in general the Trails series. Is a battle with someone who you've already seen is strong far beyond most other characters, and his battle does encapsulate that and forces you to use every bit of knowledge you've gathered to not even beat him, but show him you are worth his expectations. It's an optional battle for a reason, but oh boy does it feels nice to beat him. Also, Trails series is consistent in the fact that if a fight is supposed be hard lorewise, you're going to HAVE a hard time beating that fight.

Zelda games aren't usually narrative driven, but I found the Music Box House in Majora's Mask to be pretty telling. Pamela's often seen walking around the house, and will retreat if she spots Link. When you finally manage to enter, you're greeted by her Gibdo-infected father that appeared to be sealed away in a casket, presumably for her protection. Suspenseful music starts, leading the player to assume that they're supposed to save Pamela from her father. She forces Link outside of the house for trying to harm him, and the game can only progress once the player performs the Song of Healing for her ill father.

I am not so sure how much this counts, but I feel every aspect of Hotline Miami 1 contributes to its story, gameplay included. The music and combat give the sense of a madman lashing out and killing everyone in sight in a brutal frenzy, while the moments after when the music dies down, all that is left is a quiet background track and you walking back to your car. The madman calming down after his spree.

I love it when the story in a game is reflected in the gameplay. One of the oldest examples I can think of is Final Fantasy IV on multiple points. First is when you first meet Rydia right after torching her village and killing her mother, no matter how much you level her up, she will never learn to cast Fire, because she's afraid of fire ever since it destroyed her village. It's only when she's the only spellcaster in the party and they need someone to melt some ice blocking the path up a mountain, that she finally learns Fire, after realizing that fire isn't necessarily bad in itself. A later case is after Mt. Ordeal, when Cecil becomes a Paladin and Tellah learns to cast Meteor. No matter how much Tellah's level increases, he never gains more MP, meaning he's stuck at 90 MP for the entire game, and Meteor costs 99 MP, as it's meant to be a spell that's so powerful that no mere mortal ought to be able to cast it. And then there's the thing with the twins, Palom and Porom, when returning to Baron and after defeating Cagnazzo there. The two twins decide to cast Petrify on themselves to stop the moving walls from crushing the party like in the trash-compactor scene in A New Hope. Following this, you can try using items like Softs or Remedies on them, but nothing will cure their petrification, until much later in the game, when they turn back on their own.
It's just one of those games where I really feel like the devs went out of their way to really make the story reflect in the gameplay.

Gonna go with The Unending Coil of Bahamut (Ultimate) fight from Final Fantasy 14. The fight itself is a summary of Bahamut's creation, imprisonment, and purpose; with the first and second bosses being two parties that sought Bahamut's power, and the last boss being Bahamut himself. And at the final phase of the fight, the entire party is promptly wiped before being revived by the phoenix, and given a special buff to push through to the very end.

If you’re looking for great examples of enhancing a story through combat, grab Earthbound on Wii U. A lot of the comments here are obviously mentioning undertale, but its main influence has the best combat/narrative integration I have seen in a game thematically. Even though, just like some runs of Undertale there are times it specifically is grindy and rough, especially near the beginning, but it’s worth the journey. Also, thanks for the shout out! I know I’ve been getting to these videos a few days late lately due to life chaos, but I’m still always glad to be supporting your fantastic content. Merry Christmas!

Since there's so many indie examples to draw from, might as well point out how a triple A game did something kinda like this in terms of long-form buildup.
In Kingdom Hearts 3 near the end you have to fight what were essentially the 3 Big Bad Bosses as the 3 Warriors of Light, it's a culmination of all their fighting styles melding and complimenting one another in some crazy ways with the music fitting it as well, with each character defeat making it ever so slightly harder to continue in that sprawling match.
The last final Fight with Xehanort alongside Donald and Goofy, the silly guys who've been with you the entire time also has this great emotional impact near the end.

Interesting thought about the LIM study. I'm curious as to how much the order of the games introduced had an effect on the perception. Perhaps starting the player with Threes JS would have the player less pre-disposed to find an argument in LIM, given our tendency to look for patterns or consistencies within groupings of items.

I loved this video! I never knew wrestling was so interesting, I think I might get hooked. I also think your Xenoblade 2 example may have been a way to put “over” Pyra although I’m not sure just a guess. Have a wonderful Holiday Season and look out for those windows. Here’s to another year!

I’d argue that the Golden Trigger hit by the Young Bucks to Kenny in the Omega/Page vs Young Bucks match is a move that says a thousand words, bringing back tensions all the way from their New Japan days back with a single hit.
Kenny’s kick out was a thousand words yelled right back.
Which is made so much better by the fact the match started with Kenny trying to play peace maker between the teams and watching it escalate to that point.
