People, if you think Mike can resist driving that Disco up the Hill of Doom, you haven't been watching the channel long enough.
The hill of doom is out, as you will see this weekend - rust is the word!
@@BritannicaRestorations Oh darn...
The man with the Midas touch ✋
You have got to love an old discovery, i have a lot of fond memories in discovery ones dare i say, i would take one with a 300tdi over a defender. Shame they don’t usually get the same love as the defenders.
I have a D2 TD5 and a D1 300TDi. The D2 has more bells and whistles, but the D1 is a far better car for what I use them for.
@@greebo7857 great stuff, i would struggle to think of a better car really. Very capable and practicable.
My 300tdi defender has had a full on rebuild my 300tdi disco commercial needs same I’ve sat on it for ages because I didn’t think it was worth it. I’ve quietly been buying parts for 18months I loved the disco so much more and it did a lot of towing miles so comfortable
@@whitacrebespoke good stuff, its well worth the effort and money keeping the discovery. i have a 200tdi 110 but am on the look out for a tidy unmodified 300tdi discovery in australia, as i love them so much, i still have the old 300tdi discovery i learnt to drive in sitting in the field unfortunately the rust in it is to much, the old discovery has roughly 500 000kms on it, its been sitting for 10 years and still starts on the first turn with a decent battery in it. We get it going from time to time if the rust and every seal
In the body wasnt gone i would love to save it.
@@defenda2477 that’s problem in U.K. they all need extensive rebuilding to the body. I’ve got a 200tdi disco too that sounds like yours we use it round farm but body shot
Great video Mike, always something really exciting about a first time start up. sounds really nice aswell.
Thanks 👍
I love these "what did I buy, will it start" videos!
You Gotta Luv it..as. IT STARTS..Im in Arizona.. That rust is a nightmare...after owning 7 Rovers.. i always have on board spare Fuel pump.alternator and starter .
No investment? I think you put all your knowlege and experiences with Landrovers into this Discovery!
Bet you know the 100$ hammer wack story!? - 1$ for the wack, 99$ for to know where!
Love your videos!
lol!
Clunk at the back maybe the rear propshaft "donut" collapsed Mike. Engine seems to run ok, they are a good old mill. Well I guess all the mice that were living in the exhaust system have either moved out or passed out now.
Great stuff watching the progress on things like this, love these "will it start?" stories.
It was 30c yesterday, and you could smell dead mice and piss from 2 meters from the vehicle. Even my clothes stink from sitting in it.
They even got into the interior of the seats
Yeap motor sounds ok - stay tuned to see what's next!
This has the regular UJ fitted, and it was hanging by a thread! How it drove beats me!
How do I put the ignition coil in
You gotta love them the Disco 1!!!
Great Video!! Something really satisfying seeing something that has been sitting in a wood with old petrol in it fire right up and engine didn't sound too bad once it had ran for a while 😊👍 those bloddy rover immobiliser key fob things are an absolute nightmare sometimes
Great point!
oh m8 you really should use a mobile worktable, camping table ... for your tools and bits , that spray falling down could have become a disaster when its fall into moving parts -)
Engine sounds OK. IT’ll be interesting to see how far you get with your investigation.
Even I got excited when it fired up.
Mike, dumb question, my ‘95 3.9 has the washer reservoir and the brake vacuum unit on the opposite sides to your ‘97. I’ve not noticed this before, something to do with shipping them upside down to Australia?
Lol!
Nice one Mike however when working on old discos please consider wearing a cap. If you watch this back you'll see how close your head gets to the bonnet catch. Hit your bonce on that and your head will be a nice colour match to the vehicle! ......from experience.
I think I mentioned I remove the catch, as sometimes on old trucks you can slam the bonnet and not open it again
I knev you will make it start. 👍🏻
Cheers King Mike. 🥃
Wire off the starter motor solenoid? Dunno is if its the same as the 200tdi started. I had my 200 die driving down the road one day, turned out when i had put the cable back on the injector pump i had put it between the crimp and plastic outer so it came off
Close!
Say what you like about rot, but those old discos do go on for years, tidy ones are actually work more than the modified one in the UK now, and 3 door ones are apparently worth more than a few shiny pennies!
USA dicos have a few security things , like no starter motor if not in Park and , and foot on the brakes and so if any bad connections to these you can't start....
keep it , it's a good one !! already have signed your eye with some gunk !!!
Much appreciated!
That might go quite nicely in my Defender!
Would go very well!
Great video as always Mike 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
I’m sure you had to have put more oil in than you saw on the dipstick.
That little starter shield is the most annoying thing ever. Threw it right in the trash.
Your new daily driver? Great work Mike! 👍🏻🙏🦘
If you were Fred Flintstone - big holes in the floor
@@BritannicaRestorations I’m sure a man of your talent could get it welded up and give it a new lease of life
Curtis would drive it hahaha
Curtis said it was not rusty enough yet..
Smooth as silk!
Glad you think so!
i would love to see a video, where you talk about cold starts and reving while cold.
So you are just jumping out the starter with the screwdriver (placing it across the studs?)
Yes - not much room to get the camera in
And people say Land Rovers are unreliable ! Time to move the tools and do a Kate Bush, Run it up that hill 👍
LoL!
Was just about to ask about a hill climb!
Starter relay in the front passenger side kick board? Is she clicking inside the cab but not the starter?
#17 fuse?
Even simpler fix - stay tuned!
Starter gets it's ground from engine and plus from relay. Curios, what do you touch with your screwdriver for it to run?
Main feed cable from the battery and the terminal for the ignition key wire
@@BritannicaRestorations terminal for ignition wire on the starter itself? Main feed cable that you added, or the original?
Yes, those brass spade connectors and the battery cable on the back of the starter
Thanks so much for reply, love all your videos, very informative, please do more. I myself own 97 disco 300tdi auto for last 7 years. Currently planning on converting it to manual myself, on my driveway.
The manual 300 Tdi was a great vehicle!
Engine sounds nice..
What a result chuffed for you
It sounds smooth and running on ancient fuel, spark plugs, etc.
A tip up the hill? At let it's not far to walk home.
Spoiler alert! The cable for the shift was so rusty it snapped!
When it stops dripping, it's empty . . . Started well all things considered!
did you put a new battery in the remote to disable the security i had same issue with a disco one 300tdi
I did, but it didn't open the doors
or jump pin 10 and 11 on green connector for anti theft box should start by key then
It was simpler than that!
If it drives without overheating it could be a good winter car. I see so much potential in it but the bottles of coolant in the back is a bit telling. Shame about the rust too.
It is very rusty - and although the interior looks ok - it stinks of dead mouse/mouse piss! It was hot yesterday and the smell was eye watering!
Disco build and sale on the way then or are the parts needed so much for the RR
Parts car
Good video. Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
What was the end result of why there was no power to the starter?
The small wire connector had a dry solder joint
Looks like a project for RUclips !!!
It would be, but I bought it for parts
Could be mouse damage could’ve chewed through some of the wires
Wonderful!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Purring like a kitten.... in a cement mixer filled with bricks.
This is the first time I've ever felt like my TD5 Disco is quieter/smoother than a V8.
Be patient - first time it fired in years - no oil in the followers
@@BritannicaRestorations Y'see, this is why I go out of my way to avoid buying "parts cars".
They have a worrying habit of turning into "projects". ;-)
Not this one - I needed door mirrors for the RR as the originals a shot £294 each when you could get them, So £400 for a complete vehicle was well worth it, brake servo and PRV already on the RR
Hallo what kind of engine is it?
4.0 V8
kid with a new toy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
probably not the fault but i have to lock then unlock mine or no starting it
Thought it's a petrol? Sounds louder than a diesel
C’mon let’s see the rust!
Soon
No Cosby in a can required, disappointed 😂.
Int milk brilliant
one of the least dramatic ' will it start ' videos i've ever seen lol .. even the tappets quietened down once they built some oil pressure
I don't do drama, but was interesting to catch live
Whoo winners are grinners, let's go pick-up you know who in the mother land.
She'd need a gas mask in this truck....
Maybe it's stolen 😭😭
Firing order v8
Are you telling me or asking me?
Mike. Just like out of Frankenstein ! "It's Alive ?" You - bloody - Beauty. V
LoL!
