  • Amazing Harmonium Performance by Olivia Chaney: Waxwing
The harmonium is also known as peti or baja.
Harmonium is popular to the present day,
and the harmonium remains an important instrument
in many genres of Indian music. For example, it is a staple
of vocal North Indian classical music concerts.
It is commonly found in Indian homes.
Though derived from the designs developed in France,
the harmonium was developed further in India in unique ways,
such as addition of drone stops and a scale-changing mechanism.
The hand pumped Harmonium required one hand to pump
they were more portable and comfortable when played on the floor.
Why the hand pumped Harmonium is so popular in India?
Indian music has no chords, one hand can be free to pump
and sitting on the floor to perform is very natural to India Music player. Also it is easier to perform than Sitar.
    Olivia Chaney:
Olivia Chaney was born in Florence, Italy, and grew up in Oxford,
England, studying composition, piano, cello, and voice.
In November 2013, Olivia Chaney was nominated for
two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
Olivia Chaney's debut album, The Longest River,
was released on Nonesuch Records on 28 April 2015.

Who is listening to this masterpiece in 2020? So much emotion in this song, that somehow hits hard with what has happened this year. All the best to everyone who's reading.

I read Harmonium was invented in Eastern Europe in the 1770s and moved to France in 1805 with Leonard Melzel and Gabriel Grenie.
Thank you to the nice perfonmance!

Olivia's voice is reminiscent of the British female folk singers in their 1960's and '70's heyday. Maddy Prior? Sandy Denny? Beautiful tune.

Such a beautiful song! I wonder if anyone can help finish off the lines of the lyrics that I couldn't quite make out?
Waxwing waxwing, what do you bring from the frozen north?
Waxwing waxing we’ve been waiting on you
I bring the amber that i have gathered on the northern seashore
From the hatchlings I have fathered for thee
Ive been underground where islands are bound.........? And where gold and jewels are bound
These are hoarded under my buried brown wings
    Musical interlude
We have no need, no need of your amber
like wise your gold and your jewels
There is no true beauty in things of no use
And waxwing waxwing my only asking
Tether the breezes so cruel and
Keep my young well feathered and their bellies full
Waxwing waxwing what will you do? When your days are farthing on through
And where not lost .....….. Death comes knocking on you
    Musical interlude
I can do nothing but fly in the wake of my kin
I will su.......... die on the wing ….
I’ll die in the canyon of echoes you’ll still hear me sing
And still I will give to you all the things I bring

Hi harmonium-lovers! Just read about the history of the harmonium! There were quite a few people at the same time, in the beginning of the 19th century, working on different versions of a h.! Only a French guy A.-F. Debian, was clever enough, quite late in 1842, when there were many harmoniums already in use, to make it into a patent and named it „harmonium“! It reminds me of a more practical bagpipe, rather a gaita or bohemian bagpipes, where you use your arm to push air in the bag….the box shape in front of me is more practical…..

Can a native speaker maybe write down what they personally think the metaphor is about? The "sound" is so hauntingly beautiful but I would also like to have more "insight" into the meaning...

    • @jabezcreed
      @jabezcreed Год назад

The singer is asking the waxwing bird what it brings with it from its migration, perhaps hoping for some wisdom from the bird. Instead, the bird replies that is essentially has no treasures. Our lives a bird's life, and it will die a bird's death. I think any deeper meaning to the song might be to use the birds as an example of how simplistic life can be. Just like the bird doesn't migrate and feed its young for the enjoyment of others, we also should live our lives to find our own place in the world. One day we also will fade like echoes in a canyon, as memories with our ancestors before us.

Olivia Chaney ( waxwing solo voice ) THIS VERSION with lovely spartan accompaniment and your captivating voice, should have been the version on your album. You add a harmony to the album version, nice, but so unnecessary.
