This was mid 2000s and all ipos were getting listed at min 10% premium. I was new to stock markets and I found this to be the most profitable way. - I did not even know basics then. Anyway, there was an IPO called Bluebird. I applied and got 33 K worth. Believe me from the day it got listed till now it did not go above the issue price. Issue price was around 120rs. It never went above 105. Mostly was around 70rs. I still have those shares. They are now 15p like that. 33k is now less than 33 Rupees. I stopped investing in IPOs after that. Good lesson.

It's common sense anyone ready to spend time and study and effort before investing in IPO will come to decision whether invest or not. Most of Ipo are failure, they are mainly managed by VCs to get their money back. The day starts trading first day they exit with profits and common people who got IPO see it's opened below initial offering price and down and loose. My 2 cent. Retail investors need to be aware that it's big boys game

I follow couple of principles in buying stocks or applying in IPOs. 1. Will never apply for a loss making company irrespective of their topline. 2. Will never apply in an ipo where the valuation is higher than its peers. 3. Never apply in an ipo where the topline and bottom line is higher in the year of issuing the ipo compared to previous years. 4. Never buy stocks from market where valuation is high e.g. adani

Thank you very much Akshat for demystifying the IPO game of some new tech companies like Paytm.
As you said now and earlier ,valuation of a company is a difficult game and there is no yardstick to verify it .With this the IPO making companies inflate their figures and further inflate the share premium making the retail investors burn their fingers.
It is a sad story that even Government companies are resorting to this game of defrauding retail investors as happened in the recent IPO of LIC.Even by their Follow on Public offers , FPOs , made in government companies , existing retail share holders lost their savings .
Earlier there was controller of Capital issues and in its place now SEBI which is helplessly or deliberately watching the IPO and FPO games of both private and government companies.
Ultimately we the retail investors should be circumspect before subscribing to the IPOs and FPOs .
Thanks for the much needed education imparted.

Its the people fault because before taking IPO. Investors need to read and analyse 1000pg document which is simply not possible for retail investor so simply avoid IPOs. Also usually there valuation is within rules and regulation so there is nothing illegal but it is unethical.

its not always the same I mean a loss making company also gives the return, lets take the example of Zomato shares , it was listed at a premium of Rs 125 (66% profit) many retail investors made profit by selling it on listing day (Listing gains). Same goes with Nykaa. Investors should analyze themselves before investing in any company. I mean lets take the example of Paytm IPO, many investors knew that the company is highly overvalued and they avoided subscribing in paytm shares.

I feel the government also manipulated SEBI so the act can be done successfully. Also i feel when the economy rebounces, these companies will do good. I'm saying this on the basis of people getting used to such products and services

My very simple question why SEBI is approving such crazy valuations. Why can’t they come out with profit to price of share fair valuation ratio. Why they simply deny the historical data and focus on project figures. Even if they want to focus on future projected P&L, cash flow and Balance sheets why can’t logically link. Also they should ask VCs and founders that will not be to sell their shares unless projected 3-5 years outcome is met. They are all supposed to be well educated and they must understanding forecasting models of country and co relate with companies forecasting models. If country is growing at say 10% then companies can’t grow at 10X.

Guys, even i hv invested in Zomato on the listing day July, 2021, exactly on the same day I sold out my position in Zomato with a profit of around 10% in a day, the stock went upto 13% high on the day. After 6-8 months when I saw the stock it was crushed like anything, i was happy selling my positions earlier. What i wanna say, we as a retail investors should not hype any IPOs for listing gains/hypothetical future multibagger untill & unless the valuation, growth prospects, clear cut mngmnt, with fine macro environment is good, then we can start to build our position.
I believe Mama Earth 's valuation is not at all fair, wait for the dip/crash in the stock and use that as a opportunity to build ur position systematically!

Before applying to IPO I look for reasons given in DRHP how the company is going to use the IPO money.
Simple rule is that: when company raising money and larger portion, huge chunk(>50%) is used for exit of old new investors; don't invest a single ₹1 in it. Ultimately it's hard earned money!

Just to share, BOAT and EMCURE PHARMACEUTICALS have also filed their papers with SEBI for IPO. In the near future, we might see SUGAR, LENSKART and CAR DEKHO ipo’s.

I agree with many points you presented, except founders selling their stake. I think founders should sell some stocks -- because founders usually have the least salary at least until series B... They won't be utlra poor - but usually their salary would be closer avg or in many cases less than it. I have talked to many founders, even I did the same, so that we can attract talent and keep our burn intact. Yes, I agree, founders shouldn't see the entire stake cause that's big L.
