Taking car in for inspection tomorrow. Coming home from work 11:30 the night before no instrument panel lights. I found your post on RUclips and it worked. Saved me who knows how much. Thanks very much
OMG🤯👍! Your "work around", as you called it, worked like "magicccc" on my 2008 Prius!! And it worked on my first tryyyy! Thank you! May God Bless YOUUU for taking the time out of your busy day to support your fellow Prius owners 🤓💃🏽...
Right on man! We have found that leaving the headlights on before turning off the car helps deter the frequency once you return to drive the car. Doesn’t always work. However, I noticed that if you double tap the “start” button with foot off the brake, turns the cluster on (headlights on), and then foot on the brake and then press the “start” button again has seemed to be working.
Thanks so much! We just got a used 2009 and encountered this issue on day 1 so we did the battery in the back fix and that worked. Today (day 2) it would not work and we found this video and it worked like magic! You rock! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the video. About 20 times over the past two years I've had this same problem. Sometimes I can resolve my issue quickly using your method, other times I'll try other steps without holding the Climate button (engine off, door open, foot on brake, high beam headlights on, press disarm on key fob). Yesterday nothing was working, so I replaced the key fob battery. As soon as I opened the door, the open door light appeared on dash without pressing any buttons or turning on headlights. I may still need to later replace the combination meter for dashboard, but replacing the key fob battery has worked twice now for me.
For some reason, my own car seems to respond to the "display" button instead of the "climate" button. Still, your video was very helpful and got me 90% of the way to the fix that actually worked for me :)
Thank you sooooo much!!!! Just when I thought I had found a holy Grail in the other video using the way through the info button, it worked the first time but then stopped!😭. So then I do my little research, watch this , try it, and now I’m back in business!!! Thank you!!!
Hell yeah man appreciate it. I've figured it out another way before, but this worked first time, when my old tricks weren't working. *If your car won't turn off like mine, press and hold, power button. Then tap the power button twice, and the car should shut off.
No way it worked bro so quick and easy thank god for you bro after putting that new bat in I was like ok let’s go to work and then to dash lights I was so scared until your video thx bro
I had to take whole dashboard apart and solder new capacitor to speedometer cluster and that solved my problem. What I did is just solder wire on both sides and then new capacitor, cause that capacitor is kinda small to work with. Took me few hours to do whole job. Now I have extra capacitors for future :)
Thank you, it worked! I replaced my 12V battery then the dash did not work. After using your method, back to normal. Really appreciate you posting this!
Permanent fix - at least for me. Replace the battery in your key fob. I had the dark dashboard problem until my fob would not unlock the car anymore so I put a new battery in it and the dashboard problem never happened again. Your owner's manual explains how to change the battery.
@@jennajarrett4719 if you’re having the same issue as the subject of this video, the problem is a small module/actuator buried in the dash. Dealership will charge a small fortune(big surprise)-there certainly are some independent shops that can fix it for a fraction of the price
Amazing!!!!!!!! Thank you!!! Worked literally the 1st time. I'm lucky I saw your video after another video solving the same issue. Yours was simpler, so I did it 1st...and there cannot be a better way than this!!! Thanks you!!!
I'm not sure if this is the case or not but the last couple of times all I have had to do is put the key fob in the ignition and pull it out and the car turned off.
Thank you ! It’s really simple and helpful ! My dash lights are off most of the time, but after applying your way to restore the dash lights, it seems that they stay on more now 👍
Thanks a million for the help with the dash problem of Prius, I just tried it with my own, and just like that, I found relief; thanks, you rescued me from a world of frustrations
Thanks. This issue happened to me after I just replaced the auxiliary battery. Any tips? I’ve read I should disconnect the battery and pump the brakes then reconnect and restart.
THANK YOU!! I was not looking forward to pulling my entire dashboard off and replacing a capacitor on a circuit board. How in the world did you ever figure that out??
Thank you so much for this video! I wanted to try every other option before unplugging the battery and potentially causing other issues. This gem has eased my frustration.
I was having the same problem. Research led me to believe it's the capacitor. My workaround had been to disconnect the 12V battery in trunk; then reconnect it. This works but began to be more of a nuisance. I decided to wire a light -switch (common AC light switch 120V/15A found cheaply in hardware stores) with a short length of wire (common lamp-wire 14-gauge). Wired between grounding screw and ground wire to battery. This method allows easy access to disconnect/reconnect battery (i.e. reset electrical system). Capacitors acts to reduce ripple effect on the voltage. The main problem seems to be as the original capacitor(s) degrade over time, they may no longer reliably reduce the initial ripple (upon startup) to allow the computer to fully initialize; hence the multifunction display isn't brought online. While the light-switch was a fairly easy, quick, and cheap workaround, it seems to also have resolved the issue! Perhaps the addition of the switch and wiring induces a small measure of capacitance? In any case, I haven't had that issue again in months, if it recurs I can reset via the switch. Note: I folded the excess metal of switch and used electrical tape wrapped around it to form protective 'wings' so switch doesn't accidentally get switched OFF. Works great!
Thank you sooo much for this video! Any idea what the deeper issue is? Mine will stop working once every few months and then start working after a few cycles of on/off. I was afraid this was due to a deeper battery issue, but seeing your video is putting my mind at ease a bit. I will try this next time. Has anyone else had an issue where the car won't turn off when the dash light isn't working? I recently had to hold the power button down for a long time to get it to turn off.
Hey Kelsey, thanks for stopping by and 'm glad the video helped! I still own my Prius and the dashboard issue happens pretty often. With so many comments on this video, you may be able to find out what the technical problem is within the comments section. That weird not wanting to turn off happens to me sometimes as well. I typically hold down the power button for 3-5 seconds then double press the power button to shut the car down.
Its caused from bad capacitors in the dash itself. By doing the trick shown in this video it depletes those small capacitors and allows everything to work again. The fix is to open up the whole dash and install new capacitors. It's an easy job per-se but you need to remove a lot of trim in order to get to the screen/circuit board.
I had tried this method before with no luck. Thought I'd give it another try. Still no luck. Third try, only held the "climate" button for 1 sec, then turned lights on, and it worked. Now to order some capacitors.
Most definitely a capacitor problem in the display unit. That's the permanent fix this is just a workaround. Do a Google search for capacitor second gen Prius display and you'll see guys replacing the capacitors. That being said I'll add this to the conversation a similar workaround is to hold the door open with your foot because the hold open rods never work on Priuses, and then turn the headlights on and off while hitting the lock and unlock on your remote. As soon as the door open indicator lights up, The display is working. @@mattgaming8717
I was about to freak out, but your video saved the day!!! -and loads of hair from falling out unnecessarily due to stress 😬. Now, do I still have to take it to the mechanic or it’s nothing to worry about moving forward? 🧑🔧 MANY THANKS 🙏
Hello, when it doesn't work try locking the car with the remote 2x with the car off. This should make the blinkers go off which triggers the dashboard. Try the process after that and see if it works. I'm not certain as to what the permanent fix would be.
This was the easiest simplest quickest way to do it thank you so much. After doing it the other way you said we're almost a chicken dance this was really easy
Another obvious thing to check - make sure the dimmer isn’t set all the way down. My mom accidentally did this in her 2011 Prius and it rendered the display completely black. I actually can’t believe Toyota made it possible to do this! I came here before checking this silly possibility. Anyway, easy fix for you if this is your problem 😜
Look forward to attempting this tomorrow. Thank you. What I haven’t noticed mentioned however is that while the dash is inoperable, the vehicle does not register mileage. 217,000 on my 2007, but really closer to 247,000 😉 Also I believe the issue may be a faulty combination meter
Do you really need to hold the climate control button? My 07 does the same thing, and i only have to turn the acc on and the headlights, and it works every time.
Super late but what I have had luck with is open the driver door before turning the vehicle off. count to whatever while grabbing your phone off its mount and then leave. Has worked for me
Btw you dont need to hold the climate button. That does nothing. What's doing it is the flicking of the headlights/high beams. All you need to do is flick the high beams on and then rapidly turn the headlights on and off with the car entirely off. When the headlight/high beam light on the dash illuminates, you can start the car. As it gets worse and worse you'll have to flick the headlights more, opening the door and engaging the parking brake also helps and either alone can get the dash working when engaged over and over like flicking the lights, just, a lot dumber to do. But yeah, holding climate is just placebo in this case and can be frustrating to do when it gets worse vs just flicking the headlights over and over. Eventually it gets so bad tho you'd just have to wait till it cools down after a while. But neat trick with the 2nd gen is you can use a bt car reader with your phone and set your phone in the dash and it will reflect in the mirror where the speedo normally is and you can use a few apps to show a ton of info and speed and mirror it so it works with the 2nd gen, some apps call it like hud mode, i keep an old phone in my glovebox with it setup for when it just doesnt want to turn on and I dont want to wait.
You can also press and hold the brake a couple of times while the car is totally off until you hear what i guess is the actuator kick in then just press and hold the power button and it should work. keep the headlights on too

Try the method I used in the updated workaround video
This is so easy, thanks! Sometimes my key gets stuck in the ignition too!!
