    'Stage Cancelled' signs should have gone up after the first couple of cars. Rallying is about skill, not wrecking cars. If one cant go 20mph without car damage, there's something seriously wrong with the road. I dread to think how much unnecessary damage was inflicted on the cars here. Sad viewing.

    • @Shot_by_Stu
      @Shot_by_Stu 10 лет назад +4

      you dont cancel a stage just for that. Not with all the planning done by not only the organisers but then through the MSA to get it all certified - its just a waste. What should of happened though, is a marshal should have radio'd through to the clerk of the course or safety officer, put a stop in straight away, before sending in cam to get it fixed, and then re-opening it when safe. As for people moaning about the spectators laughing, thats just rallying for you.....

    The stage should have been stopped. Not because of broken cars, but for the safety of the competitors. A friend of mine BROKE HIS BACK in a very similar circumstance (except it was bulldust, not mud). This is not funny shit, this has the potential to be seriously dangerous. I can tell you right now from experience that even hitting a small hole at speed off a slope is enough to jar your back and neck so badly that you can barely move - hitting a hole like this, they were lucky nobody broke anything, particularly the navs, who spend a lot of time with their necks bent anyway.

    @xPyroxx i agree with you. every car that was going through there was sustaining alot of damage. hard to have a competition without cars. the Marshalls should've done something.

    To the people saying "It's rallying, you are soft", if that was your car, which are worth at least 70,000 euro for a group n car, 200,000 euro for S2000, would you not be slightly pissed that the organisers didn't notify you with a caution in the road book or notify at the start, as bumpers plus underbody damage would be 10,000 euro at least...

  • @NicksSkillz

    It's been a while since I've seen this video, but if I remember correctly, only one car makes it through without being damaged too heavily. They negligently allowed a race to happen on an unsuitable track. Period.

  • @ElwynR
    @ElwynR  13 лет назад

    what this vid does not show is after Jason went over the crowd near the jump were shouting for the marshals to slow the cars down as it was obvious it was getting serious very quickly, as for the laughter this rally brings the once a year spectator out and there was a lot of alcohol being drunk by some!!! so anything would have been funny, this deos not represent the 98% of us there at the time!! I only uploeded this vid so lessons can be learnt and it must not happen again.

    I was listening to the whole episode from Myherin and heard the requests from the marshals down there as cars were being destroyed,I'm glad i wasn't down there as i found the stages i spectated on this year to be very entertaining and watching something like that wouldn't be!

  • @cdname47
    @cdname47 13 лет назад +1

    @anjamets think of it from the marshals POV, who gave up their free time for no pay to sit in the cold and then something like this happens which no-one could forsee and then suddenly everyone is calling for their heads.
    There's no glory to be found here, and no need to retrospectively blame anyone either

  • @robinwbarrett
    @robinwbarrett 13 лет назад +1

    Well said @frazermetcalfe, far too many armchair marshals on here criticising the wrong people! Any fault lies with the organisers for not listening to the marshals on the ground.
    When the situation became critical the marshals ignored their instructions and started to slow the competitors down which was the correct thing to do.
    Those who should be ashamed of themselves are the ghouls who stood on the bank laughing!

    This is what pisses me off about ignorant people... Those marshals are SPECTATOR marshals, they're there to look after the spectators. Rallying isn't like circuit motorsports, where the marshals are responsible for the competitors, so it's got nothing to do with them. It wouldn't have hurt for a fellow competitor to have contacted their team and raised their concerns. This is what happens in rallying, get used to it. Most of all, stop blaming us bloody marshals!

    Dont blame the marshals! I was on another stage and the Radio operator at thais point was asking for warnings to be given at the start and all they wanted was to protect the competitors safety. It is the event management who have to take these decisions and rightly or wrongly they decided it wasn't necessary as the jump had not changed since the stage reeky had taken place.

  • @oregonwings
    @oregonwings 13 лет назад

    My guess is that the first couple of cars it happened to that the marshals simply thought those guys were either pushing too hard or didn't make good pace notes. However once it happened a third time with no signs of anyone slowing, action needed to be taken. Maybe marshals in such areas should carry a caution sign they can stake in the ground to warn the drivers of a developed hole? These jump to hole areas are not uncommon in rally, but are usually noted in pace notes or radioed to drivers.

  • @LiamCotterz96
    @LiamCotterz96 13 лет назад

    It wasnt the maeshals fault, it was radioed through to everywhere but nothing could be done, so it is not the marshals fault!! They did the right thing, i know this, i was a marshal but i was at a later junction on the stage.

    It's sad to watch... I work as a rally organiser and part of the organisatory crew for hillclimb and rally competitons and there is no way we would allow such SS to continue. Forget about damages to cars...but is fuckin' dangerous for the drivers...broken back is very possible injury after such a "jump"... As amateur rally driver...i'd be pissed as hell if I crash car like that... Sad...very sad...

  • @oregonwings
    @oregonwings 13 лет назад

    @Sparcoxs This isn't a demolition derby where wrecking cars is part of the sport. I don't think the stage should have been stopped, especially with so many racers that each event day went long into the night and fog. But as I said before, there should have been some sort of caution notification of the hole for the drivers for sure. Many people don't realize that racing seats have no padding and one's back can be hurt easily. Officials should have told marshals to take quicker action for sure

  • @dobbie82
    @dobbie82 13 лет назад

    Yes its a rally, but you watch the WRC footage, a small jump, smooth landings, carry on, by time these guys got through it wasnt just worn down, it was a nasty hole and a big bump on one side... Surely cant have been that hard to insist that cars be stopped or warned, is there no chain of command for the marshalls?

  • @myfowen
    @myfowen 13 лет назад

    Would take the marshalls a bit of time to realise that the stage was at fault....they would I'm sure, have thought initially that it was 'just' a rallying incident. In fairness once they saw the problem they did try to highlight the problem to the crews. Still, shouldnt have been like that in the beginning....got to feel so sorry for them...Elfyn & Jason really did'nt deserve to go out like this....WELL DONE LADS!!!

  • @cptkorean
    @cptkorean 12 лет назад

    @Mouden69 well it doesnt necessarily mean that the co drivers notes aren't better. its just the fact that hole just started to appear bigger and bigger as the drivers pass by. when those co drivers take notes initially, there probably wasnt even a hole in the first place.

    Apparently the cars have dug the hole when landing. Each passing car dug the hole deeper. Because this feature has appeared and changed during the race, it would NOT have been in the pace notes. I wonder if race organizers are responsible for notifying drivers of changes that have occurred to the track...?

    @eatmydustdusteaters.. If you knew anything about real rallying you would understand that it is not a Monster Truck fest.. These are expensive pieces of equipment that are designed with finishing in mind not create the maximum damage possible.. The general theme in these posts is that the organizers should have made efforts to warn competitors (like they did Craig Breen) of a new and potentially dangerous obstacle (eg CRATER!) just as they would if a car was blocking the road

  • @JamieD1994
    @JamieD1994 13 лет назад

    Dont be rediculous, nobody should be paying for anyones damages, this is a rally the track is supposed to be rough and difficult. I wonder what you lot would think if the Safari rally was still running.
    I do agree though that marshalls should have been slowing the cars and if there was any radio marshalls in the area they should have asked for the start line to inform the drivers.

    @eatmydustdusteaters.. You should stick to playing Dirt 3 on your xbox in you trailer in bumf**k Michigan.. Its a special stage not a "track". Special stages are not supposed to be just "rough and difficult" they vary from country to country on a variety of surfaces to test driver and navigator skills. But they all have a common theme- NOTES (yes even in Kenya!). This crater was obviously not picked up in Recce or by gravel crews by any of these crews so marshalls should have done their job!

    Its a byproduct of motor sport that ESC, traction control, cruise control, better in car safety, lighter materials, diffusers, spoilers, special paints, etc. have all found themselves on road cars Motorsport doesn't exist to feed development on road cars but the FIA will make it seem that way. Motorsport helps a lot, pressure on car companies, campaigning, makes a slight difference, a lot more than if FIA safety measures weren't there. Thanks to the FIA a lot of lives have been saved.

    It wasn't the bump it was the ditch at the bottom of the bump. Also the problem was that the ditch was getting worse with each car passing so the when the recce was driven the ditch wouldn't have been that bad hence why it wasn't a caution in the notes.

  • @turbofreak1231
    @turbofreak1231 13 лет назад

    We run our own marshals club and we marshal these events every year and others all through the year as stated in other comments on here that ditch would have been on they notes if it was there.it is obvious that has been dug by spectators to see an accident and the marshals on that post after the second car had done the same thing it would have been commonsense that it is not a drivers mistake on the first time and should have been on the radio asap reporting what was there.

    Problem is people where is the nearest radio car on there? Its alright saying radio through to whoever but those long shots show no RC in sight. For all we know there might have been a marshal sent to the location of the nearest RC, which could have been a 10/20/30+ minute walk. Given the cars are let off in quick succesion, that's a lot of cars that pass through the stage every 5 minutes, to some marshals, trying to get to the nearest radio car might not have been worth it.
    You never know, the crew that retired might have called through to service to get a message back to team or if the team is generous the senior officials

    @Sparcoxs Oh well its rallying, despite everyone else flying off the handle here the only think at risk was a bit of car damage, no-one was going to die at those speeds.
    This incident took EVERYONE by surprise, drivers, spectators, organisers and marshals alike, it happened, trying to retrospectively say someone should be blame isn't going to help anyone at all.

    Why stopping the SS? Don't you think, every team has got a codriver, a well prepared roadbook for every yard/meter of that stage and at least eyes to see and react for hints of the stage personal??? Rally driving has got like any car race the need to drive WITH exact speed control by acceleration and DECELERATION. You know that F1-Pilots do not win a race because they are faster than the others. They win because they brake stronger and later than the others!

Spectator marshelling is only part of the job, in a situation like this where it was obvious the hole was doing damage, they should have pulled their fingers out of their asses, they're almost certianly doing it for free and for fun, so they should have done it properly too.

    Hundreds of thousands of pounds of machinery destroyed on stages that on any given day are some of the best stages the WRC circuit uses.
    Organisers/owners of the land have had at least a year to get the surface ready for the action. They should be in perfect condition.
