- It was painfull to watch these drivers giving their all, unaware of the massive hole that had appeared the other side fo the jump, the sound of laughter comes from spectators who had been drinking heavily.spectators can be heard calling for the cars to be slowed down.It took jason Pritchards navigator to get the marshals in gear. I think Craig Breen owes him a few beers!!! gutted for Elfyn Evans and Jason. there was tears in my eyes, imagine how the privateer racers felt?? They must have been so gutted !
should have filled the hole with laughing spectators imo
You guy had 2020 type of jokes in 2010, what a champ
'Stage Cancelled' signs should have gone up after the first couple of cars. Rallying is about skill, not wrecking cars. If one cant go 20mph without car damage, there's something seriously wrong with the road. I dread to think how much unnecessary damage was inflicted on the cars here. Sad viewing.
you dont cancel a stage just for that. Not with all the planning done by not only the organisers but then through the MSA to get it all certified - its just a waste. What should of happened though, is a marshal should have radio'd through to the clerk of the course or safety officer, put a stop in straight away, before sending in cam to get it fixed, and then re-opening it when safe. As for people moaning about the spectators laughing, thats just rallying for you.....
It's not just the cars, it's the drivers and navs. This sort of shit wrecks backs and necks!
Yeah they should have at least stopped the race temporarily to take out that big bump, wouldn't have taken very long.
the crowd never gets bored
Real rally fans wouldn't find it amusing cars were being wrecked, can't believe people were laughing, respect for the Marshalls for slowing cars down
Yes they would.
@xPyroxx i agree with you. every car that was going through there was sustaining alot of damage. hard to have a competition without cars. the Marshalls should've done something.
That bump is the intercooler killer
I was there, and saw this - we were worried somebody was going to get hurt! Eventually after 6 cars had been put out of action, the marshalls stepped in.
I was listening to the whole episode from Myherin and heard the requests from the marshals down there as cars were being destroyed,I'm glad i wasn't down there as i found the stages i spectated on this year to be very entertaining and watching something like that wouldn't be!
It's been a while since I've seen this video, but if I remember correctly, only one car makes it through without being damaged too heavily. They negligently allowed a race to happen on an unsuitable track. Period.
so much laughing, any idea how much motorsport costs?..
yes. that's why they're laughing.
Can you imagine Breen losing the €500,000 prize money over this hole, definitely owes it to Elfyn and Jason, what a video.
The stage should have been stopped. Not because of broken cars, but for the safety of the competitors. A friend of mine BROKE HIS BACK in a very similar circumstance (except it was bulldust, not mud). This is not funny shit, this has the potential to be seriously dangerous. I can tell you right now from experience that even hitting a small hole at speed off a slope is enough to jar your back and neck so badly that you can barely move - hitting a hole like this, they were lucky nobody broke anything, particularly the navs, who spend a lot of time with their necks bent anyway.
Damn
I was listening to the rally on-line and heard many drivers at end of this stage explaining the carnage from "the whole". Some saying there was a dozen cars stopped. This definately explains there frustrations better then any words.
Totally shocking, feel sorry for every single one of them that occured a problem on this part of their rally. They deserved something back because of this!!!
as an ex marshal i cant believe the marshals collected bits from cars without standing before jump telling drivers to keep right or slow down...
@thankyoupourlavideo
You are from the USA, right?
Was it like this on the recce?
Who was the stage commander for SS16?
1:47 : nice jump and smokes reception !
if i were 16 id have thought this was ace, loads of cars crashing. but now im 20, abit older, worked for a race team and experienced the effort of preparing a car for a rally, its gutwrenching watching this.
Dont blame the marshals! I was on another stage and the Radio operator at thais point was asking for warnings to be given at the start and all they wanted was to protect the competitors safety. It is the event management who have to take these decisions and rightly or wrongly they decided it wasn't necessary as the jump had not changed since the stage reeky had taken place.
My guess is that the first couple of cars it happened to that the marshals simply thought those guys were either pushing too hard or didn't make good pace notes. However once it happened a third time with no signs of anyone slowing, action needed to be taken. Maybe marshals in such areas should carry a caution sign they can stake in the ground to warn the drivers of a developed hole? These jump to hole areas are not uncommon in rally, but are usually noted in pace notes or radioed to drivers.
Would take the marshalls a bit of time to realise that the stage was at fault....they would I'm sure, have thought initially that it was 'just' a rallying incident. In fairness once they saw the problem they did try to highlight the problem to the crews. Still, shouldnt have been like that in the beginning....got to feel so sorry for them...Elfyn & Jason really did'nt deserve to go out like this....WELL DONE LADS!!!
Well said @frazermetcalfe, far too many armchair marshals on here criticising the wrong people! Any fault lies with the organisers for not listening to the marshals on the ground.
When the situation became critical the marshals ignored their instructions and started to slow the competitors down which was the correct thing to do.
Those who should be ashamed of themselves are the ghouls who stood on the bank laughing!
@Mouden69 well it doesnt necessarily mean that the co drivers notes aren't better. its just the fact that hole just started to appear bigger and bigger as the drivers pass by. when those co drivers take notes initially, there probably wasnt even a hole in the first place.
recently, on the interviews of former WRC Academy champions (WRC facebook page), Craig Breen talks about this stage and this hole. he was worried he would lose the title because of the slowing down at 2:24. worth checking
拆保險桿用的?
@Sparcoxs This isn't a demolition derby where wrecking cars is part of the sport. I don't think the stage should have been stopped, especially with so many racers that each event day went long into the night and fog. But as I said before, there should have been some sort of caution notification of the hole for the drivers for sure. Many people don't realize that racing seats have no padding and one's back can be hurt easily. Officials should have told marshals to take quicker action for sure
@patrykbfk
youre a real men of genius.
To the people saying "It's rallying, you are soft", if that was your car, which are worth at least 70,000 euro for a group n car, 200,000 euro for S2000, would you not be slightly pissed that the organisers didn't notify you with a caution in the road book or notify at the start, as bumpers plus underbody damage would be 10,000 euro at least...
I can't see how anyone can say the marshals are to blame,i was listening from another stage so didn't see any of this myself. The stage commander + officials obviously didn't feel the need to warn the drivers even though they were requested by the marshals on the scene a number of times.
This is incredible!!!
No its not..about them getting hurt .thars not enjoyment..
@anjamets think of it from the marshals POV, who gave up their free time for no pay to sit in the cold and then something like this happens which no-one could forsee and then suddenly everyone is calling for their heads.
There's no glory to be found here, and no need to retrospectively blame anyone either
Sweet lamb is a shithole. It's always rutted and bumpy and always breaks cars.
bloody hell, Jason Pritchard had a hell of a nose dive
@gojonnyjo How can you do your pace notes correct, when the hole was not there on recce, it also was not there on the 1st run through the stage. Surley a warning back to the start, to warn competors is the way to go
It's sad to watch... I work as a rally organiser and part of the organisatory crew for hillclimb and rally competitons and there is no way we would allow such SS to continue. Forget about damages to cars...but is fuckin' dangerous for the drivers...broken back is very possible injury after such a "jump"... As amateur rally driver...i'd be pissed as hell if I crash car like that... Sad...very sad...
The Marshals should have been over that like a rash. Feel sorry for the guys who has their Rally GB cut short.
Awesomely Tragic but as some comments say that it the way of Rally racing!
Just for info, all drivers were made aware of the culvert that had dropped through, and in conjuction with FIA safety made the decision to continue the stage.
@patrykbfk Tnx Good Guy Greg !
@ZXCV3211 Title of the thread is "Issues with the Marshalling on Wales Rally GB"
@crice1uk Thanks.
Dobry odcinek :D
my tractor does not stuck often but when it's do,its a show !
What an absolute shambles , clearly should have been stopped before the carnage tallied up . A lot of expensive cars wrecked and entry fees wasted .
Cheers to those mates at 2:27!
@NusiprasukVeida did you read the description??? can you read ????
That's a joke... but very entertaining to watch at the same time. Glad no-one was hurt apart from their vehicles :/
Apparently the cars have dug the hole when landing. Each passing car dug the hole deeper. Because this feature has appeared and changed during the race, it would NOT have been in the pace notes. I wonder if race organizers are responsible for notifying drivers of changes that have occurred to the track...?
Shocking :(
someone has to take responsibility for that! shockin!!!
...absolutely agree with you. That should never happen again in any rally
If I was to come across that on stage and it ended our rally I think I'd be a little pissed off! As everyone has said, at a bare minimum it should have had a verbal warning, but that probably wouldn't have solved the problem.
Yes its a rally, but you watch the WRC footage, a small jump, smooth landings, carry on, by time these guys got through it wasnt just worn down, it was a nasty hole and a big bump on one side... Surely cant have been that hard to insist that cars be stopped or warned, is there no chain of command for the marshalls?
@NusiprasukVeida "spectators can be heard calling for the cars to be slowed down."
Sweet Lamb its just adove the Bowl.
I was listening to the marshal in the area and wasn't the reply he was givin when requesting the drivers be warned at the start something along the lines of "has the stage changed in any way since they did the recce".
those marshal's are a disgrace
It wasn't the bump it was the ditch at the bottom of the bump. Also the problem was that the ditch was getting worse with each car passing so the when the recce was driven the ditch wouldn't have been that bad hence why it wasn't a caution in the notes.
Shit this is one of the best automotive sports in the world.Dont see how you think it's silly? These guys make nascar look like the special olympics.
It took 8 drivers to wreck their cars before the marshalls decided to warn any one :| guess the mini felt like ignoring the marshalls too :P
Kościuszko też urwał:) Szkoda aut, zwłaszcza SUBARU:(
@NusiprasukVeida how and what could he do? He was too far from the jump to run to it and tel the drivers to slow down.
I think the marshall near the jump should have make signs to the drivers so they can ease up on the gas knowing that theres a fuckin big hole waiting to wreck their car.
We run our own marshals club and we marshal these events every year and others all through the year as stated in other comments on here that ditch would have been on they notes if it was there.it is obvious that has been dug by spectators to see an accident and the marshals on that post after the second car had done the same thing it would have been commonsense that it is not a drivers mistake on the first time and should have been on the radio asap reporting what was there.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW
Its a byproduct of motor sport that ESC, traction control, cruise control, better in car safety, lighter materials, diffusers, spoilers, special paints, etc. have all found themselves on road cars Motorsport doesn't exist to feed development on road cars but the FIA will make it seem that way. Motorsport helps a lot, pressure on car companies, campaigning, makes a slight difference, a lot more than if FIA safety measures weren't there. Thanks to the FIA a lot of lives have been saved.
2:05 "This one coming fast"
its not the stage, its the bump, and it could have been the co-drivers notes. they should have changed the notes in the recce stage
@meimwj I guess you are a real stuck up guy or an alien who doesn't understand humor...I emphasized how these drivers are ULTRA BADASSES despite the unexpected the got through it!! That's respect I have for these chaps...n if prob they could dig the hole further they would weed out some competition. n I really appreciate these guys..
after every car. "OOOOOOO!!!!!!"
so what happened when 00 and MSA safety went through?
i didn't watch this through to the end. too painful. a lot of money and hard work goes into those cars, and it's a bit needlessly destructive.
@Sparcoxs Oh well its rallying, despite everyone else flying off the handle here the only think at risk was a bit of car damage, no-one was going to die at those speeds.
This incident took EVERYONE by surprise, drivers, spectators, organisers and marshals alike, it happened, trying to retrospectively say someone should be blame isn't going to help anyone at all.
It happens in Rallying sometimes, get over it.
@ELUSIVEJIM I was about to say the same. so painful to watch, but not painful enough to go and do something about it!
Crap!! not even one rally car rolled from that damn hole..!! these drivers are ultra badassess..Can someone please dig that hole a bit further..want to see some real action!!
the bumper killer
I♥U RALLY:)
Why they not cancelled the event?
If i was nº 50 i stoped the car in the stage and no more people get the cars damage.
This was a crime, and a shame to Rally of Wales.
3:51 tańczy electro:D
why the nascar have audiance? why a lot of crash compilation dvd are sold? for the same reason crash... 90% of the people love to see crash, its part of the show.
in all fairness mind the mini and the ds3 didnt fair too badly from it. tough cars em
Cool
that was why when the cars got to the bottom bits were falling off them
what this vid does not show is after Jason went over the crowd near the jump were shouting for the marshals to slow the cars down as it was obvious it was getting serious very quickly, as for the laughter this rally brings the once a year spectator out and there was a lot of alcohol being drunk by some!!! so anything would have been funny, this deos not represent the 98% of us there at the time!! I only uploeded this vid so lessons can be learnt and it must not happen again.
have a look at this thread [you will need to register on the British Rally Forum to see it]. I started it after what I saw in this vid and my own involvement in the Rally...
Issues with the Marshalling on Wales Rally GB
in the BRITISH STAGE RALLYING area
@Sparcoxs Plz it's just amazing that's all.
Damn..poor cars D:
yea granted a verbal warning should have been given at the stage start, have done this myself on past rallies
the 1st ford fiesta R2 must have been the worst
@almerasas Exactly my point. The Cambrian Rally is run in Clocaenog & you're allowed on the stage to find a good place to watch. It's cheaper, better run & none of this Nazi control crap. You can park quite close to the stage, it ran on one of the usual Cambrian Stages anyway! so unless you choose to walk further into the forest for better viewing, you don't have a huge hike.
To be fair, the Marshals were only doing as they were told, it's whoever is in charge of the event that's to blame.
OMG!!! What a mess...
@geoffers158 exactly!!
wow it should be on co-drivers notes
It's a setup and they know it!!
@dx6789 Wait, they did eventually
hey this is cool!
That's rally people, neither a grad race nor tarmac circut.. that's pace notes for, I was in rally driving for almost 10 years and any more or less experience pilot or co-driver will predict that there will be a hole in such a place after first 20-30 cars, especially I am not sure at all if there is a sense to jump at this place although I didn't saw it out of the car...
