The fact that she was able to sell this moment, and with so much nuance on top of the emotion that absolutely shouldn't work this well, is insane. What a talent.
I think it is because she spends the whole show being a strong boss lady... and this is the moment she appears the weakest. It all adds to the gravity of "everyone is human".
I'm glad that the universe finally got around to recognizing Sheryl Lee Ralph and that she got to deliver an acceptance speech for the ages. That having been said, Waddingham deserved every ounce of a second Emmy for this episode.
The confusion when the first notes of Rick Astley's song is sung and the shift when Rebecca hesitated singing 'goodbye' is what blows me away. It's the subtle way of telling us, that even if she hated her dad for cheating on her mother, she still loved him and misses him. Hannah gave us amazing performance here, holly shit.
Once again Ted is the beacon of hope. I mean what a guy. He’s the last one to show up and yet he’s the only one who helped Rebecca with the song (at first) to get her motivated to continue.
This scene perfectly captures how and why this show is so good. Emotional scenes that hit you to the core, coupled with comedic moments with insanely great timing.
It’s dark because there’s nothing good she has to say about her father, every one is anticipating, from his own daughter of all people, something deep and heartfelt and she chooses rather to rickroll them, specifically her father. Her mother loved the song so it was a gift and a cryptic message to her. She gave her father nothing. They in the end, get the last laugh. 😂
Not a joke. Just because the world had made a meme of the song doesn't mean it cant have deep meaning to someone. I'm glad the writers didn't ignore the possibility.
What an amazing show. I'm so glad this exists. In a world full of reboots and sequels - this is so fresh. Heartfelt. And really wonderful. Thank you for Ted Lasso
This took the iconic chuckles bites the dust breakdown from Mary Tyler Moore and cranked it to 11 in mix of humor and raw human emotion May be the greatest emotional sitcom moment of all time and there have been some great ones Honestly may be one of the more honest shows of grief in film since my girl "where are his glasses?" Well done bravo
As a writer I personally feel that this show, both seasons, have been amazing and well deserved of the Emmy wins that it garnered. It is in the shows best interest to have the focus shift amongst all the different characters, otherwise things get stale fast. For example, the episode with Beard was a brilliant homage to Scorsese, ( his film "After Hours") who as you know they have referenced before on the show (the episode where they remove the curse, for example). I give a lot of respect to these writers, it is very hard to keep putting out a consistently good product regularly
That’s maybe why they keep ‘homaging’ - because it’s too difficult to come up with their own inspiration. This episode was like a very poor Richard Curtis impression
@@LaPtiteAnglaise Well, that is certainly an interesting take on an Emmy award winning show. I often wonder what compels people to post negative comments about what they don't like. Amazing how this episode is going to secure Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham an Emmy nomination (at least) for next year just a few days after they won their Emmys for season 1.
I love this scene so much. Instead of being spiteful toward her father, which would only serve to upset her mother (considering her father isn't exactly there to hear it), Rebecca simply chooses to make her mum smile.
Honestly one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. Every episode is rich in content, sentiment and deliciously engaging. I so wish I could start all over, seeing it for the first time. If you’ve not watched Ted Lasso yet, what on earth are you waiting for?
I think it’s the lyric “desert you” that hits him hard all of a sudden because he just got done talking about how his dad committed suicide & it feels like he quit on his family

impossible... it's impossible to view this scene without becoming... - emotional -. There are episodes of television that transcend their series, their genres, where they should belong... to become... 'historic' in their own right. I would humbly pose, that in a series of outstanding episodes, Ted Lasso's S2/E10 - 'No Weddings and a Funeral' is one of the best of these - 'historic' - episodes; as good as TV gets.
Not sure I’m capable of watching this scene without shedding a tear…or three. The fact this show started off as a commercial for NBC soccer and turned into one of the greatest television shows of all time is a testament to the team that created this beautiful series.
This is such a moving scene. This entire episode Rebecca is dealing with her hatred for her dad and now hating her mom for letting her dad treat her that way. For loving him anyway. Being expected to speak, but having nothing good to say for her father while being true to herself she instead reaches out to her mother, a song that made her happy. In a way its an apology to her mom and a reconciliation that theyre different people. She's angry at her mom for not being strong like her, but realizes her mom still manages to be a person full of love, joy and kindness despite everything else. You could probably draw some comparison as well with the lyrics and her feelings toward Sam. It also ends up helping Keely and Roy later on as well. Ted Lasso is a beautiful show. Like nothing Ive seen in ages.

This scene reminded me of one the best funerals I ever attended. My admin’s mom died at ripe old age of 85. “Granny was a pistol” as we say in Texas. She lived in a trailer on several acres. She was a country girl thru-and-thru. Instead of the usual hymnals, she composed a list of country songs. She included some good-ole beer drinkin’ tunes! Never been to a funeral where Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings kicked off the funeral. 😊
I cried like heck when this scene happened, my dad had died and we didn't have a funeral (he didn't want one, thought it was a pain in the arse) But this show really helped me, thanks to the folks who made it 😊

This is literally the darkest joke I’ve ever seen. Simultaneously about to cry and laughing my ass off. Just incredible
It’s also an appropriate joke too. If there was any place you can Rick Roll and legitimately get away with it is at a funeral.
It's not a dark joke though.
There's nothing dark about this joke. It's quite wholesome actually.
