Best one... Manu is a great scholar. He has a very clear and crisp thought process... who can express it with great quality n clarity... Its very obvious that he has in depth knowledge about what he says... Very difficult to find such a quality researcher in India.
Manu you are a gem! Such a great episode. This is the first ELI5 I heard all the way - and man, I gotta check out all the other episodes. Good job @Meghnerd and team!
While i was really looking forward to watching this one, and overall I enjoyed the episode, I have some feedback: Anthony’s points about erasure were really important, and I thought Manu and Meghnad were a bit dismissive of it. It got better when y’all were talking about Ravan & Periyar, for sure. But it seemed that maybe Meghnad didn’t understand, or maybe was looking for a hot take to debunk, when he asked Anthony about emotions and history. It’s not hysterical to be upset when you see history being replaced with oppressive lies, because the oppression is happening in the present & future. It’s not just “men’s egos”, not just about knocking down that one rani; it’s ensuring brutal control of all gender minorities in the future. I appreciate that Manu (Dr. Pillai by now!) stated that he studies power, and also that in the future, well-sourced histories will include lgbt perspectives. In a time of majoritarian backlash, it’s all the more important to question our own biases and do our best to combat erasure of the truth.
Our way of celebrating the Independence Day is the best as it includes both commemorating the freedom fighters in one hand and having fun and frolic on the other. Why should we always emulate the Western civilization?
Manu Pillai is well on his way to be a national treasure. He’s the kind of guy who would enrich any topic he speaks about. Fascinating insight! Meghnad, I think you own Anthony a separate episode on literature, rather Tamil literature. Clearly your producer played a cruel joke on you and him by bringing him into this episode 😂
14:09 Thulukar is a nickname that people use to call the Rawther communities from South India rather with a slight derogatory touch. So how come a North Indian Muslim princess was called thulukkanachyaar when that term is used to refer a south Indian community?
Im loving the podcast but I must say, the name is kind of mismatched 😂. It's more like ELI want to be enlightened. 10 Year olds would'nt really understand the nuances of historical values of folklore and mythology and it's historical significance ifykwim.
Bhagavadgita was an attempt at making Hinduism more semitic.. Arjuna who's like a comrade to Krishna suddenly becomes a devotee. He's like I shall be the one true god.. these holy fictions are part of history but they're not history
With all due respect concept of god in Hinduism or Sanathana Dharma is different to the Semitic understanding of it. The closest proximity to the Semitic god is referred to as Ishvar/ bhagavan in Hinduism for example Vishnu, Shiva and others. Brahman, the single entity ( not to be mistaken for Brahmin or Brahma), the universal consciousness without shape, form, attributes is the underlying unity of existence, the substratum of all creation. Ultimately that is what Sanathanis believe in regardless of the approach they take. Krishna reveals to Arjuna in the Bhagavadgita in a nutshell the main concepts of the Vedas and Upanishads.
Wrong. it is our history and our existence is proof of their existence. because civilizational witness is passed down generations that's how we know the truth. they are our ancestors. when Krishna said I am the god it means the infinite consciousness or infinite energy which pervades the whole universe which is our eternal infinite cosmic self that is god. consciousness is energy and it is everywhere. e=mc^2. nondual advait vedanta was proved when Eienstien gave this formula.

Really? Bro do u really know what is meant by the word jihad and it's implications in Islam? Averting the evil is what is meant by jihad. Me resisting to lie or do an evil thing is also a jihad. Regarding the history people have been always pulled the stories to fit in their own narratives. For example Aurangazeb being portrayed as a villain but in fact he was the most diligent true patriotic indian ruler. When his predecessors spend millions in building tombs like Taj Mahal which is of no use to the public other than the aesthetic appeal, Aurangazeb and his family never took money from the royal treasury to meet their expense. Rather they weaved their own clothes (even the king) and sold it to earn the money to run the expense. But he was impartial and never overindulged the whims and fantasies of local political warlords that caused a rift which in turn is reflected even now with some malicious vituperative mudslinging. The learned people who have really pursued history along the academic lines knows the truth.

All my fellow Tamizhans believe Cheras, Cholas and Pandyas saved us from Sultanate/ Mughal invasion. Only till mid of 14th century. We had Vijayanagara/ Nayaka rule for the next 3 centuries. Maratha rule for some time in some parts of TN - Thanjavur ruled by Marathas for 2 centuries after Nayaka rule. Go and say these to a Tamil guy and they will shout at you, saying Tamil Nadu ruled by Tamizhans only, ignoring Vijayanagara and Maratha rule that had Kannada, Telugu , Tuluva and Marathi rulers!

Quite funny, how Anthony is so proud of having Periyar statue in front of Srirangam temple. And Periyar's captions in the statue saying "God does not exist" makes him wow. Look at how the other two people react. Says a lot! I'm neither left nor right wing but as a Hindu it is disturbing. Can these people afford to have the same Periyar statue in front of mosques and churches, with the captions saying God does not exist?
These people say they accept the good things of Mahatma Gandhi leaving his bad side. Can they do the same with Sanskrit and Brahmins? Is Sanskrit just rituals, mantras, caste discrimination and misogyny? Can't these people see the good side of Sanskrit as well - poetry, Agamas to understand temple architecture, Shilpa Sastra to understand temple sculptures? I'm not a Brahmin and I don't know anything in Sanskrit but I see Sanskrit as a language that helps us in understanding our culture (besides Tamil or any language that belonged to a particular region). There are Brahmin people who contributed to anti caste movements as well like Bharathiyar of Tamil Nadu. If it is possible to say how Sultanates and Mughals supported Hinduism in their rule, can't they speak of those Brahmins who were against caste discrimination? They won't because people like Periyar criticized Barathiyar. I only see hypocrisy among intellectual leftists As a Non- Brahmin Tamizhan, if I say these , they will give me the title of Sanghi or a biased Brahmin or a Vadakkan. I'm neither left nor right wing. Someone who is against polarisation - not just religion but also on caste and language.

Been nearly 6 months since he left. But he left on a good note because he wrote in to NL hafta once and retweeted one of NL's tweets after leaving. Maybe he left because wanted to do something different and because of better remuneration.
Maybe he does. Perhaps IVM podcast budgets are higher and is better funded than NL which majorly runs on subscriber money. Maybe Meghnad was hired so that he could make IVM's podcasts more popular. Organically built popularity takes time. Not everyone is Ravish Kumar. Even Ravish Kumar rued his unforeseen exit from NDTV because it gave him a tremendous exposure as it was a national TV channel and he had a team to help him bring out good episodes of Prime Time. People don't always leave a place due to lack of remuneration. As I said earlier, perhaps Meghnad left to do something different from what he was doing at NL since several years. His Sansad watch is still missed by viewers. NL is contemplating producing an explainer show on similar lines.
