What happens if you don’t cut it down each winter, as in a screen? Will new growth come through? Do cows eat this? Can implant it in a pasture and the cows leave it alone?
You do not have to cut them,they will grow green again and you will not notice the dry part,however it burns fast if it catched fire. Animals don't eat it.

How deep are you planting the rhizomes in your cold climate?
4-6 inches. Early May when soil temps are warm (50 F or more ) is best for establishment in southern Ontario.
