  • Formed in Courbevoie, France by guitarist-vocalist Phillips Planchon and bassist-vocalist Thierry Sobézyk in 1985, ASYLUM PARTY was one of the bands that emerged out of the so called "Nouvelle Vague", the French New Wave.
Like British bands such as And Also the Trees, Sad Lovers and Giants, The Comsat Angels and The Chameleons they played a very dreamy, refined kind of post-punk. But bands like Asylum Party took this a step further, fusing dream pop, goth rock and dub to spearhead a new movement latterly termed coldwave which found homes across Europe.
After the release of their mini LP Picture One in 1988, the band abrought friend Pascale Mace on board and recorded their first full album Borderline the following year. Soon after the release of their second full album Mother, the bands future started to look bleak. Because of financial restraints and lack of commercial success, Asylum Party disbanded in 1990.
Thierry Sobezyk, bass player and co-vocalist of Asylum Party sadly passed away aged 57 on the 11th July 2019.
Tributes were paid by former 'Touching Pop' outfits and friends including Little Nemo, Mary Goes Round and Babel 17.
Thierry's style of bass playing owed much to his two heroes, Peter Hook and Jean-Jacques Burnel, not to mention his love of 60s and 70s rock and pop.

This version is slightly different from the one I’m familiar with - it seems to be slightly sped up and in a different key - but still great! Finding out about Asylum Party was one of the highlights of the early part of the pandemic for me!
