13:40 Wage Theft by employers and their intermediaries is the largest category of property theft in the U.S., eclipsing all other property crimes combined in a given year (think on the order of 100x the value of all shoplifting that retailers have ginned up into a faux public order crisis in the U.S. right now to cover for mismanagement and secular decline). If all of these stolen wages were suddenly recovered it would lift millions out of poverty and provide the greatest economic stimulus since WWII. Though nominally illegal, Wage Theft is pervasive because workers often don't understand their rights, or even know they're being shorted, and the penalties are so relatively minor, and so poorly enforced, that it is almost always worthwhile for businesses to thieve and risk the fine, particularly if they have socially vulnerable or financially/legally unsophisticated employee demographics. This is an example of "the social construction of crime" - the severity of a crime, wether police enforce the relevant law, and indeed wether something plainly wrong is enshrined in law as a crime at all, is not judged objectively (e.g. according to how much damage is done to a victim, or how corrosive it is to society in general), but rather by socioeconomic positions of the perpetrator and victim. We only care about property crimes against the ownership classes, and them stealing from workers is rarely a crime at all in practice.
Story 1: I work in hotels. I tell people all the time that the amount extra that hotel staff are willing to do for you is directly proportional to how nice you are to them. Be nice to the front desk at check-in, and you might get that upgrade. Be a jerk, and enjoy your room next to the ice machine.
Don't pay any mind to those haters. I've seen some crazy shit, so I can completely believe this happened. However, I don't think it was so much a REAL apology as a "please don't do anything horrible to me!". Guys of this sort are typically lacking in the cerebral capacity, and revert to the 1600s-style witch hunting when it comes to things which make them even the slightest bit uncomfortable. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he revised the mental script of the event to be more along the lines of "that pervert cross-dresser was coming onto me!"
Yeah, I already pointed out how HRT doesn't change someone's voice at all, or maybe just a tiny bit. Certainly NOT tot he point where it would hurt to try sounding like one originally did. It's just fact, corroborated by both science, professionals, and trans people. The guy apologizing is another thing I didn't think of right away, but it does add a little bit to the story sounding fake.
Story 3: Ah, don’t you love it when someone thinks they can "fix" something that wasn't "broke" and it just makes things worse? Steve erased his foot from existence thinking he knew better than long-time employees
Story 4: The moment that rude husband showed up to try to switch after his earlier behavior, I wouldn't have allowed him to say a single word and told him he made his choice so suck it up buttercup.
Last time I heard someone being rude to hotel staff they were politely informed that the company had a strict policy against abusing staff and they're required to leave, of course the company will keep the nonrefundable deposit and bill for any additional room charges, but they won't be charged the full cost of the night. It was so glorious to see because of course you know it cost them a lot more to get booked into a different hotel last minute(not to mention the 10% deposit they lost). I really don't understand why people can't just listen and try to be understanding though, it's in the hotel attends best interest to resolve issues as quickly as possible without causing complaints, treating them like they're dirt won't exactly get you anything better than being nice.
What's baffling is that guy yelling at the hotel staff calling them names, while basically acknowledging that it's their fault that they are not having that additional room. Since they just had those additional people show up with their group without booking the room. So the staff could also just have given them an additional room at all & it would have been their own fault because they didn't book enough rooms.
Story 2 - Not sure where they're at...but suddenly changing an employees status, pay, or compensation without any acknowledgement from the employee is very illegal in the US. A federal crime kind of problem. I got contracted by a company that did it. I walked away in 3 weeks because the owner was going to be prosecuted for it...and got 10 yrs in jail.
I was in a facility most of my life, let's not get into why, but one of the staff was against using scented air freshener in the bathrooms. The reason he gave? "Well even if I spray this, it's not gonna make the smell go away. It's just gonna turn into vanilla poop"
Story 2: Honestly, with how the business was running BEFORE the change, it was only a matter of time before things went kablooey. Like, paying managers too much, having too many people (not to mention multiple incompetent people), just not good ideas
And if they changed everyone to salary without notification, that is a problem, along with businesses only being allowed to have a certain number of employees that are salary based on their sales.
The last story made me think of an episode of an old TV show, Arnie. They needed a new member for a barbershop quartet. They held blind tryouts, needed someone with a really deep voice. The person who had the deepest voice was actually a woman.
@@shaunbolton4662 I always liked it as well. There were so many good shows on back then. I don't even watch TV now. Or if I do, it's reruns of the old shows.
I retired before virtual meetings became a thing. But if I was ever in a meeting where someone was yelling at me, I'd record it immediately and send it to both HR and the entire upper executive group. I'd also add a warning that if this is the type of people that you employ, you'll lose your customers.
FIRST STORY: As a hospitality major, I know exactly what is expected to go on in hotel booking. It's a policy of most hotels to keep an entire floor available for emergency bookings on short notice but if the woman says that they were completely booked, I'm inclined to believe her, given how much she insisted on her story. That being said, the guy who was screaming at her was completely deserving of his tiny room because he wasn't open to compromise.
For story 2, the entire staff who were fired should have sued the business. You can't fire someone for doing their job and working the hours agreed upon in their contract. Then they also should have sued for the lost wages of the two months of overtime that wasn't paid.
Story 2: I had a similar, less extreme, situation. I would get there early, to avoid traffic, but then my boss made some rule that we couldn't leave until a certain time. He constantly left before that time because he "showed up early", when I was still arriving before him. Our system also wouldn't let us enter more than 40 hours a week. So, on Fridays, I started taking 2-3 hour lunches, just so I didn't go over 40 hours.
That was one good thing about working as a state employee. I was told real quick, NO overtime without express permission, and on those occasions we got "time and a half". Being a single guy living alone, I volunteered for these OT times.
I've worked in various industries. EVERY TIME a business consultant comes in to find out how to save money, they NEVER trim the fat on the management level. If your company looks like a diamond with middle management grossly oversized, don't cut the lower levels first. Or else you'll end up with a a triangle and no lower level workers left.
Story #1 - I've found that simply treating staff like human beings, rather than some sort of service droid, can get you three star service at a two star hotel. Free early and late check-in, assistance with navigating the area, recommendations that are from real experience rather than just hotel partner businesses, and that sort of thing. For example on my last trip my flight arrived 4 hours before my scheduled check-in time and I was able to check-in 3 hours early. When looking for a specific chain restaurant I was told the one near the airport was pretty bad but another one, just 5 miles further away, was well above standard.
Story 1: Stories like these remind me of the time I had to get a tie warrantied. I had just gotten my oil changed and the shop noticed a bulging in the sidewall of my brand new tires I had bought less than two weeks ago. The place I got it from was right across the road and with then still under warranty I took it back on over to get it replaced. Their shop though was in a bad state, three of their four mechanics got sick and the last one had six cars before he could think of touching mine. It was so bad that they were pulling staff and even managers from other departments to handle what they could with checking in, pulling inventory, talking with customers, running the registers, and even running snacks out to the only guy in the garage so that they could focus on the work and didn't have to leave his station to grab or do anything. There was a guy in a little roadster sports car infront of me who was there for who knows what. He already had a manager and one other dealing with him so when I pulled up the other lady who was helping ran out to check me in. As I was explained the guy kept interrupting her demanding that he be served first since he was there first, the managers kept telling him that he had them and not to interrupt us. Anyways I quickly learned the situation and having been there before I understood what was going on, the guy infront of me wanted to cut the line to get whatever he wanted done first without caring about anyone else and wanted all the staff to give him their full attention. Anyways I told the lady that I was fine waiting but asked if we could take care of it everything else involved in the warranty replacement and since I had other errands to run if I could just take my tire off, throw on my spare, and leave it with them to work on when he gets the chance. Guy began yelling at me that he was first and there is no reason I should be getting any help before him. The managers he was with asked him to step away from me and they will deal with him. We got back to it, the tire I bought was no longer in stock so they offered a replace it with a slightly more expensive one from another brand and we went to go pick one out. Guy came back on the phone with "Corporate" and complaining about how I was getting any amount of help at all, how the staff should be focusing on him and him alone, and how he demanded that they stop setting me up to receive service sand pull him in right then and there ahead of everyone else because of the inconvenience they caused by helping another customer at all, never mind what we were doing wasn't affecting how fast the mechanic was working nor how I was basically ding everything I could to lessen his work load. The managers showed up again and pulled him away from us and we finished picking it a tire and I was getting ready to go get the jack out of my car so I could swap the bad one with the spare when I was approached again this time by the manager who simply asked me what I was doing. I told him that I planned to take the tire off and leave it for the mechanic to swap and I'd be back to pick it up later. He just told me to wait five minutes and he'll have my car moved to the front if the line since all that needed to be done was swapping a single tire. I listened without complaint and on my way back in he apologized about having to deal with that guy and that because of how he was acting he was told to leave and was effectively banned from the store. Thing is if he was there for an oil change the place across the street not only did a better job with better quality supplies, but they had more people on staff, a free to use popcorn machine and soda fountain in their lobby, and included a vehicle inspection and air filter replacement for less than the store this happened in, they just didn't do Tires.
Bar story: Well, they saved money by not having to operate the bar. Of course they lost a lot of income in the process, but they saved money. We had flown into Denver in the winter. When we went to pick up our rental car, to drive to Vail to see our daughter. There was a lot of yelling from a group of skiers. Several cars had not been returned on time and the agents were trying to switch cars around to get everyone a car. We just made light conversation with our agent, commiserating with him about the selfishness of people not returning their rentals on time. We had reserved a Ford Escape. The agent didn’t want us driving to Vail without 4 WD. Every car he tried to give us turned out to not be available. We told him we were sorry he was having such a hard time and if it would help we’d go find somewhere to have lunch to give him a breather. He thanked us and made a could calls and the gave us Ford Excursion, which is a big 9 passenger SUV. Full leather all the extras and free gas and no extra cost. Then he thanked us for our patience

23:47 I’ve done something similar before. I’m FTM, super short, and kinda petite, and one time a guy was trying to hit me up with “come on, sexy, you can talk instead of snubbing me”, dude reeked of Leisure Suit Larry vibes. I was in the middle of my transition via HRT, and my voice was cracky and could border on nasally. So, mustering my courage, I slid my headphones off, turned around, and said in my most awkward, crackly teenage boy voice said “what?” The guy went pale and ran off, thinking that not only was he hitting on a boy, but an underage boy. And of course I just started cackling, cause DAMN, that guy ran out like Chris Hansen was on his ass.

Story 1: Back in the 70s when you had to check in at the airline before you could pick the seat you wanted, I was regularly traveling from the US to Amsterdam. I knew exactly what seat I wanted, so I asked for it by number. It wasn’t available, so I asked for the same seat on the opposite side of the plane. It wasn’t available, either. I was disappointed. By this time, the agent was curious and asked why those seats? I said that on the 747, they were both window seats, but the best part was that they were where the side sections went from 3 seats to 2 across (with a bump next to the side of the airplane. That meant that instead of having to put my carry-on bag under the seat in front of me, which severely limited my legroom, I could put it under the seat in front of me next to the window. 😊. The agent was so charmed by my reasoning, he gave me a free upgrade to Business Class. Trust me! That’s a massive upgrade on a trans Atlantic flight! So much fun, just because I was polite!
Story 2 should have gone to a lawyer and whatever the local version of a labor relations board is. They had an ironclad case for theft of wages against that bar. Every single employee would have ended up being paid in full with interest and a massive fine levied on the bar owner.
Story 4: Even though their friend had to stay in the crappy compartment, I would have found it worth it for the entertainment of watching the Karen's try to deal with it.
In her defence, the "Karen knows best" Act came into force today, and if Karen declares you fired, you are legally obligated to leave your house to her, and go live under a bridge.
Story 1: The old saying goes you catch more flies with honey the you do with vinegar. So if that would explained the situation nice the desk might upgraded him to the four bedrooms suite at a small extra charge.

Story one, I was at Semicon and stayed in a hotel in SF, I was there for three days and the woman at the desk was mean, really, mean. On the last day I went down to the lobby and she was there with a new Hair dew. On check out I said I love your hair, it is beautiful ( or something). Later I had to stay another night and I went back to the same hotel. When I checked in she was there, She personally came over and said the same thing OVERBOKKED, but booked me into a 3/4/5 amazing sweet with a bar a kitchen, TVs in every room. I was young and respected the place, only sleeping in one bed and shower. Remember you never lose when you give someone a complement, maybe it comes back at you.
Story 2: This is what happens when you don't pay your staff. They don't work more hours because they aren't getting paid. People who work retail only hold their tongues in front of Karens because they are getting paid. I think they probably could have sued the business when they were all fired but I'm not sure. But yeah, people don't work unless you pay them. So pay them.
Management earned what they got for how they treated their staff. If management had any intelligence they would have had the week start on Thursday and end on Wed. This way you have your staff their at your prime times and can LEGALLY cut OT by sending people home early on slower days.
That hotel story made me laugh, mostly because i agree with what fluff said after about being nice and they'll be more likely to help you. I stayed in a hotel once that was really pricey, as it was right on the beach and, to avoid making this short story long by rambling, i went to drop my bags off, knowing i was checking in early and they may not be ready. They asked if i wanted to upgrade to an ocean view room that they had ready at that moment. I declined, as i wasnt too worried about it. And the lady gave me a free upgrade anyway. No screaming, no fighting. I was simply being polite to the lady helping me and she decided on her own to give me the upgrade, just so i could take my bags up instead of leaving them at the desk, and not have to wait for my actual room. Might not have been an executive suite, but the ocean side room had a beautiful view. Much better than i would have had, I'm sure. 😄❤

First story, all I can picture is that scene from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas when Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro are checking into their hotel during a policeman's convention and the one police guy is screaming at the front desk clerk who's trying to solve the situation but because the Desk clerk is kind of effeminate and has a little bit of a lisp, the cop starts screaming at him and calling him homophobic names and slurs. THE CLERK THEN SEES JOHNNY DEPP AND DEL TORO, AND HAS THEM CUT THE LINE/MOB OF ANGRY POLICE, AND TREATS THEM LIKE THEY WERE KINGS!! (THE room that he gave them was their reserved room but it was also the last of the rooms of that kind and that just happened to be the room that the angry policeman was screaming about! Anyway his wife starts crying the cop starts screaming look what you did and at one point we break the fourth wall, where the front desk clerk basically screams at the man exactly what he wishes he could say without fear of being fired... if you haven't seen it highly recommend!

Story 1: I had a similar experience with booking. The hotel was overbooked because of the concert wr were there for as well as college graduation season. The lobby was chaos, and people were blowing their lids. When we made it to the front desk, they explained the situation with resigned anxiety. My husband walked out to laugh his ass off. Not to be rude , but we have this sort of thing happen a lot. I was polite, let the poor woman speak, and accepted the compromise. We lost a night in the main city but we got free transport to the new hotel, free room service and amenities. When we returned the new day. We were given the executive upgrade for the weekend with all the luxury. Proof that kindness and understanding beats assholery every time.

I agree! I once worked in a restaurant that one day decided to pool everyones tips! We used to have individual tips before, so we were a mix of great and experienced servers in the best sections, and a bunch of college kids with little experience outside and in the casual areas. They were very unreliable, and had very little training, so their tips were very low. The senior servers waited until the next check to see how bad the damage was, and on average our income had fallen 45%. So all 3 of us quit on the spot. Two months later, the place had to shut down. Same fate as this story!

"You must be mentally slow", says the man who doesn't understand the concept of "there are no double beds in this hotel"
LoL That "non-refundable" fee can be charged back via the customers bank.
If common sense was so common. Everybody would have it. Common sense is so rare now a days. Its become a super power.
My mom calls it 'uncommon sense' 😂
I know some people that could have a handful of coins in their pocket and still have zero common sense.
My Gramma always said "you catch more bees with honey..." That proves true in the first story!
As always, thanks for another great upload!
Story 1: Angry Man FAFO’ed you don’t mess with front desk people…
I am shocked, SHOCKED, that Steveo was that bad a manager before he became such a great editor! 😁
Loved that show! Herschel Bernardi and Sue Ann Langdon. Haven't seen it in years, but remember it still. Thanks for the reminder!
@@shaunbolton4662 I always liked it as well. There were so many good shows on back then. I don't even watch TV now. Or if I do, it's reruns of the old shows.
Story 2: Wait, you mean employees work for money, and don't enjoy the thrill of unpaid overtime?
Given that's the attitude of corporate America, that's a lesson they never learn.
Story 2: Why is is that nobody went to the labor board about all of the unpaid time?
Story 4 - I give OP’s buddy MAJOR kudos for not only putting up with that nasty smell but also putting up with Karen’s nasty complaining.
That first story is glorious, it deserves an award and the clerks deserve a massive bonus
I believe this saying fits with any Karen or Kevin.
"Common sense is a flower that doesn't grow in everyone's garden"
Lmao
That last story, idk WHYYY but it's got me like 'Now this looks like a job for me, cos we need a little of HRT' pmsl
Don't understand why the Bartenders that didn't get paid didn’t go to the labor board
Exactly! 😎👍
Story 2 is why we need unions. United we bargain, decided we beg
Bar story: Well, they saved money by not having to operate the bar. Of course they lost a lot of income in the process, but they saved money.
Customer complaint letters story: I can MAYBE see setting up an outline of how complaints are to be addressed, although it sounded like OP had a pretty good handle on that. But people recognize bs form letters that essentially say and do nothing except lead to more complaints.
Especially when said letters have so many spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes that you'd swear the manager of I.M.P. typed it up.

Sorry 2: It still tickles me to no end that there are still employers who think they can get away with not paying people their rightful wage. You can either pay your people, or you can be shut down.
That's -unfortunately- the American way!
@@JamesDavy2009 Only because most Americans don't realize just how much power they have. I hear about workers struggling to unionize, like they need their bosses permission or something. No, you just form a union. What are they going to do? Fire you? That's just fuel on the fire for lawyers. No company can service without employees, because none of the Higher Ups are willing to do real work. They would rather profit off other people's work like leeches and landlords.

Okay, kudos to OP for that masculine voice scare. 😂😂😂😂. I love it!!
MOOD of the DAY. Cheers to the freaking weekend.
Remember, unions give power to workers!!!
Um... my mom and oldest brother would disagree. Unions only ever took money from them.
Pinky said it best....
Playing with my money is like playing with my emotions, Smokey....
Don't play with people's money!
Will the stuffies come back?? I love Fluff. Listening makes my dark days better❤
Management earned what they got for how they treated their staff. If management had any intelligence they would have had the week start on Thursday and end on Wed. This way you have your staff their at your prime times and can LEGALLY cut OT by sending people home early on slower days.
Story 1 reminds me of an old phrase: you get more flies with honey than with vinegar.
Story number one.
Classic example of a saying my mother told me one time.
"Be sure your words are sweet for you may have to eat them"
And I know from experience they can be a bitter Brew!😉🤣
I think hotels should refuse service for people if they’re going to behave like that.
You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
The expression means you gain more friends with kindness than with meanness.

They could not find our reservation for 15 minutes and due to that "inconvinience" we were upgraded to a penthouse suite with rooftop terrace.
I loved 🥰 this video!!!! 😂😂😂
