This is by far one of my favorite self-hosted services now. Got the full Wikipedia database @ around 102GB. I can't get over how insanely cool it is that I literally have all of Wikipedia on my own hardware.
Exactly I keep this sucker and tools isos hacking stuff in my wallet on a micro SD card 1.5 tb
Only found your channel today.. I love it.. I see it's been a while since you uploaded anything.. Hope everything is okay!
Yep, just a lot going on with the kiddos lately so we are shifting our focus where needed until I can get the time again. Thanks for watching!
@@selfhosted that is always most important! take care
In theory, would this work on raspberry pi if I used the raspberry pi specific versions of Kiwix and docker? Also, is there anything stopping me from just copying .ZIM files from my PC rather than redownloading them?
You sure can. They even sell a rpi setup on their website but you can do it all on your own if you wish. You can make a hotspot out of it. It's pretty awesome.
@@selfhosted My thanks for the quick reply. I've been using the standard Kiwix installer for about a year, but I'm sick of having to completely reflash the SD card every time I want to update the .ZIMs
@@faultyinterface Use the docker run command with a wildcard. See this page. Under the docker compose stack thehomelab.wiki/books/docker/page/setup-and-install-kiwix-serve-on-debian-systems
So...what is docker?
Thanks for watching. See this video ruclips.net/video/e2jVkcC_KCc/видео.html&ab_channel=Geeked
I tried to do this on an rpi 4 but it says exec format error even though I’m pretty sure there is a arm v7 version, what am I doing wrong
I like self hosted stuff, I have over 20 myself, but why would someone want to host Wikipedia?
This for me is more for offline local use. I just wanted to show that it can be hosted as an option. I love the thought of having a laptop I can take anywhere with the complete Wikipedia and more all searchable offline. I'm just a sucker for information I guess. I thought some of you would find this interesting as i did.
how do you build your own zim? any easy tutorials? Seems Kiwix selected zims all very by the books mainstream
@@Ephesians-612 I saw information about this but that would be a whole new video and I am uneducated on that. This is the best I can do for now openzim.org/wiki/Build_your_ZIM_file
how can i convert file from zim to json?
Where is the docker compose file? Please share it if you can.
Does it support backup pages like patreon or video streaming site like youtube channel?
Whats the point to self host copy of wiki?
As I mentioned in the video, you may want a copy of the corresponding wiki projects locally on a laptop if you travel to areas with limited internet. Or if you are a doomsday preper LOL.
If Wikipedia goes down or get banned or if the internet temporarily goes down it's nice to have.
@@runessonadamar lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol Yeap sure,,, The internet goes down and my fist though would be "OMG I cant get to wikipedia" lol lol lol lol ffs
