Excellent recommendations on learning to create calm, being careful of the level of horses and riders you are with, trail courtesy. A lady I rode with used to give a treat at the farthest point on a ride, so the horses learned to look forward to that rather than heading home.
Loved this video! It is so nice to hear your voice explaining why you are doing things a certain way while we watch you taking a nice relaxed trail ride. And I love the way you train your horses. Also love hearing your baby girl in the background!
I couldn't agree more. Same goes with dogs, in my opinion: Most people love pushing their (or other people's) dogs into excitement which ends up with overexcited dogs who need to be kept on a leash and people having no real contact with their dogs.
@@HarmonyHorsemanship I do it a lot. Being both a horse person and a dog person, I'm aware of basic differences (dogs = predators = confident vs horses = prey animals = skittish) but also what they have in common. Or rather, what people have in common dealing with them. When it comes to animals (whatever kind of animals), people will always make the same mistake, which is not seeing the nature of the animal.
It all made sense to me! A lot of riders do not realize that abusing a leisurely ride can undo a lot of good training! A lot of bad habits can be learned by any horse when the rider does not "think" before doing!
I agree on keeping calm energy on trail rides. I am very careful about who I ride with for the same reasons you mentioned. Right now I Am rehabbing a rescue horse I’ve had about a year and a half. I’m always training for slow, quiet and calm energy. Nice video.
I went to a guest ranch a few years ago and did lots of trail riding every day. On the way back to the ranch we often rode in an open flat field which would have been inviting to go faster. But the guides never let us trot in that field, walk only as they did not want to teach the horses to rush towards the barn. Big no no! I love your little filly!
It looks like you had a perfect trail ride & you made excellent points. Everything you said is true. One time I owned a barrel racing horse who's previous owner did nothing with him other than the barrels. He was a horrible horse to take on trail rides. Always trying to go back to our stables on the way out. Then on the way back, when I was about a quarter of a mile from home he always acted out. It was a battle to keep him from galloping back.
So true! Starting out with a quiet trail horse, you can easily add in the occasional burst of energy, but if you don't establish from the start that trail riding time is a relaxed time, it can be so hard to fix later on. My horses love trails, as do I.
I'm dying to do this with my rising 2 year old but I just don't have a brave/consistent trail horse to pony her from. And she's bigger than my old gelding. lol

I'm all for being respectful but I bet half those people that complain about horse poop on the trail don't even pick up their dogs poop...I know that happens a lot here in the UK xx
Nice video!
Thanks!

That is a great idea too
That was awesome! I don’t ride anymore so it felt like a “virtual” trail ride! ❤️
Glad you liked it
Secret’s face marking is so unique, she’s so cute!!
Thank you :)
I just want you to know that I really enjoy your videos. You have a very good outlook on everything.
Thank you for following

Interesting to compare the two
managing arousal/ fear makes such a big difference with both species

Its unfortunate when they dont know how to be calm
The second youngster you had on your trail ride with the other lady is a beautiful colour I think it is buckskin
She's a grulla, yes I love that colour
Donna Jeffery thank you!! Yes the grulla mare is mine
