- Shogun is a new Samurai series which has taken me by surprise with how good it is.
Starring Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis, it is set in Japan in the year 1600 - Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

3:49 Kashigi Yabushige is Paulie Gualieri of "Shogun".
This is the best show on TV in years. Not just this year. Cinematography the dialogue acting costumes. Just excellent all around.
Best show on WESTERN TV, maybe. Haven't bothered to watch it myself but I doubt it lives up to the hype.
@@AmbiguousMan724 you want be disappointed. It’s like watching the Ghost of Tsushima. But a series you play that game. Great game try that out as well.
I've got fond memories of reading this book in High School and have been absolutely blown away by how well it has been adapted. I look forward to the new episode every week.
Totally agree this TV show is amazing. Book is really good to….. also check out Mr. in-between …its a really great show no one ever really talk’s about it…
Certainly a must see the attention to detail and the storytelling is fantastic
Shogun is the real-life Game of Thrones.
I never read the book, but watched the original Mini-Series they made from it when it aired YEARS ago, (Ya, I'm old) and loved it then. So as long as they stay to the main story, this should be a banger as well.
"Masters of The Air" has been pretty good so far as well. The last episode of that is airing this week. Worth a look if you liked "Band of Brothers". Not as good a B.O.B., but WAY better than "The Pacific."
Latin Portuguese and English and japanese are all in the books.
In the novel there is no scene where Blackthorne speaks in English.
Impressive program. Didn’t watch the mini series back in the early 1980’s so unfamiliar with the story. Seems like the five clans are similar to Godfather’s five families, and the one clan that is central to the story not unlike the Corleone family. Enough swearing so far not unlike Goodfellas too.
I'm enjoying it but honestly, I enjoy more of the rivalry between/among the daimyos. The English guy, I understand why he's there but..
Its kind of like Vikings in that it explores how 2 different medieval cultures react to each other. + brutality
Haven’t seen it yet but it looks like the production value is a lot higher. Earlier seasons of Vikings were a bit sad looking. Unfortunately the writing plummeted in season 5 when they finally got the money.
@@LucLB01 i liked Vikings all the way to the end tbh, not the best show ive ever seen but enjoyed all the characters arcs and endings. Good historical fiction, not that theres much other than HBO’s Rome.
It's okay.
I'm a ninja guy, myself. 😁
Well, just wait until the end of the season. Sometimes they make a couple of episodes before it gets really bad. Second season, it sends to start to suck when the rodent executives set their eyes on it.
Anna Sawai is dragging it down like she did with monarch legacies of monsters.
yes

It's already about western imperialism and somehow the white guy is the hero. It went straight to the white savior trope. I am very disappointed in this series.
As long as no "woke" Disney types enter ill try
Having read Clavell’s novel at least a dozen times, I find this adaptation far too westernized and somewhat wokeified for me.
Thanks for the recommendation! I've heard of it, but it wasn't on my watch list. I'll check it out.
Update: I'm 2 episodes in. It's f@#king great! Love it!
I think you can really like "Mr. Inbetween", if you watch it
Best series to come out in years!
I haven't looked forward this much to watching a show every week … in a long time. Years actually, maybe since 2016-2017.
Coincidentally, i finished the book a month before i even found out they had done a new adaptation. The main thrust of the story holds, but it seems they're looking at some of the characters in a slightly different light, but without changing the character (if that makes sense). For example; the Spanish pilot Rodrigues comes off a bit more antagonistic towards Blackthorn in the show than he did in the book. None the less i think they brought the character to life, and the actor is great in the role.
Best show I've seen in years. Every episode gets better and better!
Remake of a 1970s mini series starring Richard Chamberlain as Blackthorn...twas very popular in its day as was the book by James CLavell
1980
The original was excellent. Trust HBO to do a good job. While you're at it, a review on HBO Chernobyl would be good. My Russian friend said it totality captured the late Soviet Union.
Would be curious to see what you think of the original version of the series too. Maybe try watching it when the remake has aired its last episode.
The sad part is that there might be only one season.
Love iti
great
I plan to check out this show later!
Also will you do True Detective retrospective videos?
You want be disappointed.
@@careful7951 Excuse me?
I do plan to get to True Detective
Interesting, I have seen the trailers for this and thought this looks good so you saying it’s worth a watch has convinced me to give it a go! Thanks Cineranter, you the man. Now get your fucking shinebox!
This series is superb! I have rewatched multiple episodes because of the many nuances and nefarious intentions I missed the first time watching.
Totally a great show, very faithful to the book as well.
my dad watched it he recommended it to me might check it out
It looks great but........ Nobody wants to read a television show. It'll do great in Asia. Just don't think most Americans are going to like it
it's doing really well.
Time to adapt and get with the times buddy, asian media is very popular today like anime and k-drama, so more western viewers are used to reading subs.
Stop being lazy.
I've always thought the only people who don't like subtitled films/programs lack intelligence, once I'm committed I outright forget I'm 'reading a television show'....as the previous commenter stated, stop being lazy
I can barely figure out who's who between the three old Japanese guys. Like who's in charge is this guy a general or a lord? It's cause I have to read so damn much.
