I removed the rear sight base from mine and mounted a scope on the 3/8” dovetail beneath. There is no need to permanently modify the stock if you just buy quality scope rings meant to mount to a 3/8” dovetail. It holds zero and I can return it to its original configuration any time I want to.

For those who don't want to scratch or break any part on the gun, check out the Brass Stacker mount. It install right over the sight (only need to punch the 2 pins of the sight without remove the sight itself)

I just took mine off of my Mosin and I thought some others might find it useful to know that on my 1936 91/30 the rear site was held on with not only the 2 pins but also a set screw and solder. I had to use a small butane torch to heat the mount for almost 5 minutes and then several tries before it would come off with the brass punch and hammer. I had the rifle in a vice with a rag around it and then used a rag under the brass punch in order to not damage the barrel.
    Hope this helps!

Thank You for this video. We're going to attempt this. I saw a few videos where they heat the rear sight mount up to ease its removal. To be honest I like it just the way it is. Fire, smoke, noise and accuracy! But my buddy already bought the scope mounts. Thanks again.

Seeing as the rear sight is mounted with pins could the rear sight be reattached? I have a 1926 Hex with all matching numbers. I don't have the room for another Mosin and would like to keep everything as original as possible but I'd like the option of mounting a scope cheaply without causing irreparable damage to the gun. I've been looking at after-market PU scopes but they all require drilling and tapping the receiver and I would like to avoid that.

Thank you for your post. I used the same mount and scope on my Mosin Nagant after watching your video. I had tried the other scope mounts that mount to the existing sight but that was a waste of money because of how unstable it was. This is the way to properly secure the scope mount. I was able to get one of the pins out of the sight but I had to get a gunsmith to remove the other one and the sight itself. They tried at the gun store but were unable to remove the pin as well. I would like to sometime find a better scope with better magnification, but for the price it is a good start. I can't see putting a $400 scope on a $80 gun, especially since I only take it to the range and use it to protect our home against bears. It must be working, because so far there haven't been any bears.

right, many times they're soldered on... hit it with a small harbor freight torch (low setting & w/o the wood stock) or a soldering iron... some will say this'll hurt it- but- umm... they had to solder it on the 1st time, right? Oil it and tap it out. I think the above mount would be better with 1) locktite, 2) probably the ATI stock.

Ok, I got on Amazon last night & ordered a scout scope (pistol scope) but I just went ahead & ordered a set of (2) scope rings instead of the one-piece set up, I I think they will be a little more versatile & will slide on easier than your one piece. I got a cheap pistol scope that had good reviews for durability because that is of GREAT importance, that recoil will ruin many scopes that lack durability.

I removed my rear sight which I regret. I have a 1940 Mosin form the Tula factory and the sight is welded on using silver solder, not all models have this. I had to torch my barrel until it was red hot and smash it off with a 5lb sledge. Once removed I noticed I had the wrong mount, it was for a Mosin with the rear sight. They are many more selection and easier to install with out removing the sights. After my experience as blacksmith I woun't recommend it.

If you don't hacksaw the part I did you could because all your doing is knocking out the pins on the sight you just have to align the original sight and put the pins back in and its back to original - Charles

@gothkid287 Its a Mod That Will Give you a Better Scope Mount but you do have to cut off the end of wood to get it to fit but it still look nice when u got it put together - Charles

kk, if it helps brass stacker makes solid steel parts and are 100% usa made, just remove pins thats it. if you want a good deal, go to amazon and search for "brass stacker scope mount", there is one for 59.00$ and shipping is free, they also will ship it first class to your destination. best deal i found on mine. hope it helps.

@HappyRock64 I have not tried it but There Should be No Reason You Couldn't because you only are driving out the roll pins and they can be reinstalled - Charles
