ALL officers should be trained to recognize and handle mental illness. This kid looks a little "slow" and since he's big and black, he's a ripe target for untrained officers to just pull out their weapons at the slightest odd behavior and get violent immediately. They should be trained to recognize the signs of a mentally ill kid having a meltdown who needs to be comforted. It's VERY different than an angry violent kid going on a rampage. But if you haven't been trained, you think they are the same.

This officer took the time to understand that this young man had a disability and knew how to de-escalate the situation. By simply getting to his eye level and speaking calmly was right. I have 2 members of my family that are severely autistic and ya hear so many horror stories about the mentally challenged and police interaction because a lot of times the cops don't know. This should ABSOLUTELY be part of standard training, how to calmly deal with those who are mentally challenged or have serious mood disorders. It can save lives and ultimately make those justifiably sketchy about police a little more trusting.

I have worked with kids for years and a valuable part of my training was just squatting/sitting down so you are level with them. Just getting down to their eye level really helps, standing towering over them just frightens them, if you make calm eye contact it can really calm them down. I have stopped babies crying their eyes out just by looking calmly in their eyes so they know another human is aware of them. Shouting and ranting at them never helps it is a shame a lot more parents don't realise this. Being calm and quiet can rub off on the child but instead I see so many parents getting wound up and they just make things worse. Honestly there are so many ain't shiz parents out there it's really sad.

It's common sure, but asshole power tripping cops are common also. Once had a cop when I was 15 get in my face and ask if I wanted to go outside and fight if he took his gun and badge off. What did I do? I have no idea. I was sitting in a starbucks with friends and joking around with each other. Maybe he thought I was laughing at him idk? Another instance I had ran out of gas on my college campus and a cop took time out of his day to drive to a gas station to get me gas so I could leave. Another instance I had a cop pull me over on a bridge next to a lake with friends. Someone said we looked suspicious and reported us even though we were just walking. They wanted to search us and after dealing with a consented search during a speeding ticket my cousin got while I was a passenger I didn't want to wait 2 hours to deal with a bs search. I politely declined saying they didn't have probable cause and he threatened to charge me with trespassing since the lake I was on was private property despite the bridge I was walking across was a highway that was public. So he was willing to falsify charges to scare me. I called his bluff and he left. Another cop talked me down from a stupid suicide attempt I made as a teen and genuinely made me feel better.
There are good cops sure, but that doesn't mean we should ignore the bad ones. It's common enough to be a problem. Anytime I exercised my rights as an American citizen such as the previously mentioned bs search cops have gotten aggressive to try and provoke a response that would lead to an arrest. Moral of the story? Keep your cool when dealing with cops because they won't all the time, but you can be charged for losing your cool while they won't.

This country used to have cops, peacekeepers, only shot the guy robbing the bank... compare that to now, an officer cant mind his own business so he puts a guy behind bars for dating while being a teenager, owning weed, walking down the street drunk, carrying a weapon without hiding it, all of these get you put in a concrete box at the very least.

@@miamislice3280 I was a cop for 3 years man. I saw the good and the bad in people. There were cops that wanted to escalate stupid shit just to get attention from us. A lot of cops also start at a young age, in their early 20's and once they put that badge on they think they're the President lol. It has to do with maturity, however, I blame the government for not teaching how to deescalate a situation at all. In my 300 hours of training, not once they talked about deescalating. The things you mentioned aren't their fault, they're doing what they are ordered to do and lock you up for carrying weed, when it was illegal. However I'm talking about those who treat people like they're animals, talk down on them, use excessive force against them etc..
when I worked at the jail, I showed nothing but respect and concern and I got nothing back but respect as well. On the streets it's a little different and you have to watch your back, however, you can do that without freaking out, pulling your gun and using force when the situation doesn't require that. Anyway, fuck it I'm done with it and I didn't like what I saw. But there are a lot of great officers out there and I know a lot of them personally. Great people with lots of compassion and they're level-headed, not because of their training, it's just because of who they are.
