J.H.Roman (1694-1758) : Andante from Flute Sonata in A-Major . Göran Söllscher guitar

My idea with this channel is to sometimes present music that you might not have heard before.
Johan Helmich Roman is often called ’the father of Swedish music’.
He studied in London,played in Handels orchestra and later on returned to Sweden where he was responsible for the Royal Chapell orchestra.
I have often played this Sonata with different flute players but couldn’t resist also making a solo version of this first mouvement from the
A-major Sonata. (Excuse me Anna,Ezequiel and Dan😊)
Recorded on a very hot summer day - now autumn has arrived….

Back around 1990, I walked into a record store in Charlottesville, Virginia, and saw a CD prominently displayed with you and your guitar on the cover. It was BWV 1007. An amateur guitar player, I bought it because of the picture. I always pictured you - strangely - in the very kinds of rooms you shoot your videos. I have an alto guitar I bought from Heikki Rousu in 2015. I mostly play country music now (hey, I'm an American. Whadda expect?). But I'll always come back to this. Thanks for the music.

Beautiful. Wow! How many strings does your guitar have, and how is it tuned?

11 strings, low to high strings: Bb1 C2 D2 Eb2 F2 G2 C3 F3 Bb3 D4 G4, this is the typical tuning.
I can't answer exactly how it tunes, my ear is not that accurate, but the bolin alto is normally tuned up a minor 3rd from the guitar (in G), sometimes the 3rd string is in the equivalent of F# tuning so as to be able to play Renaissance lute music directly from lute tablature.
So the highest sounding 6 strings are normally (1-6) G, D, Bb or A, F, C, G.
By "top 5" strings I think you mean the extra 5 bass strings of alto? These usually descend diatonically from G 6th so 7-11 = F, Eb, D, C, Bb but these are tuned up or down a semitone to suit key. These extra bass strings are usually normal E 6th strings of various tensions I believe which is convenient & economical.
There are some players who tune up a tone from normal guitar so the alto sounds like the equivalent of 2nd fret (F#) of normal guitar instead of 3rd fret (G)
