Thanks Jodan. Being much more personally interested in Jazz, I wouldn't normally have had Guillaume on by list so this was a great chance to break down his playing, and really glad you enjoyed it!
@@jordanschug I did see the stuff with Theo and I don't think its his wheelhouse, but the gypsy swing stuff is great. I don't think the gypsy swing is really Jazz but a beautiful pre Jazz artform that had some elements of Jazz. It swings, but so do many other musical styles. I really enjoy it and respect the long tradition including Guillaume of players who've dedicated themselves to preserving it and performing the repertoire that Grapelli and Django wrote, but it's a very specific thing not a living artform (Like being a Baroque cellist, which I also love). As a cellist, Getting into other styles by immersing oneself in fiddling styles as he has done is a great way to jumpstart your playing and is much lower hanging fruit than trying to adapt modern Jazz language I've tried to do, and if I were giving advice to a teenager I would probably advise them to start by copying fiddlers as well. It even seems as if the new generation of classicalcello virtuosi trying to distinguish themselves are doing the same thing and increasingly playing violin repertoire as which probably makes more sense for their careers than trying to record yet another Dvorak Concerto or Bach album. Modern Jazz or even anything post-1945 in the Jazz genre isn't really another hat to wear but really requires a different approach... not just harmonically etc, but really to the instrument. If you want to hear more or talk more about it I'm doing a free class/hang on Saturday and there's info at theimprovisorsguide.com/igc-free/
Hope you enjoyed the stream everyone! If you did feel free to leave a comment or a like and if we get 100 in the next few days I'll keep doing future reaction videos for free on YT!
I straight up enjoyed it :) Whenever you do the next one I got a recommendation of someone named Rupert Gillert he has a Jazz Cello Tune series and I’m sure you might have some good ones to react to :)
Thanks for doing this. It really helps to understand what’s going on and how he thinking about this.
Thanks so much for doing this Jacob and for sharing your knowledge of the genre : )
Thanks for doing this. Guillaume is awesome, unmatched playful mastery with amazing rhythmic feel. He and Karoub have the best swing feel

@@theimprovisorsguide you mean like Swing Jazz vs modern? You should check out the stuff he does with Theo Kaiser.
