They should be using a lot more of that “armor-piercing” ammo. It seemed to really wreck those Alliance ships very easily. At least when compared to their normal guns.
Because their neutron particle cannons has effective range in light seconds (on-screen in the original OVA put its effective range at 20 light second!) and hit almost instantly. AP ammo are basically mass driver with velocity of the fraction of light speed (5% of light speed, to quote the old OVA) which is inaccurate beyond 1 light second range due giving enemy plenty of time to detect it coming and move out of the way. So the only time they'd use one is when they close the distance to below light second range to make it more accurate.
machaiping Thanks for the explanation, that makes sense. It’s my first time getting into this series so I guess it is tough for me to judge distance and what is really going on in the battles.
To be accurate, their battle distance is measuredin light seconds The shells fired from their neutron particle guns have a range of light seconds and shell speed is close to the speed of light, and as long as the generator is running, they can constantly fire, sovthe chance of hitting the target is quite high Yet the AP shells or missle is far slower, so by the time it reaches the target, they will be long gone So its only effective in short range The number of shells each ship can carry is limited as well
@@tukangiseng No. It happened because he fought the battle wrong. His XO actually had the right idea as it would allowed them to continue moving as a cohesive force and maintain distance.

When your effective range needs to be measured in light seconds, it's probably really important to have long cannons so that you can actually hit what you're aiming at. I'm pretty sure the ships do have turrents but they're only for small fighter craft since those come in close, they wouldn't work so well in long range combat.
poppyface Thanks for telling me. This style of warfare ain't unheard of, it's essentially their way of fighting as they've already found ways to hit ships from afar without really missing those shots.
@@bargainbin6162 Technically the guns have about 30 degrees of movement, however they're spinally mounted and meant to fire at targets more or less directly in front of them. On top of that because of how the Void Combat is having turrets ala Space Battleship Yamato or even like in Battlefleet Gothic is just sinking (pun) cost where it doesn't need to be. The Ships are inevitably going to get sunk or seriously damaged with a direct hit at "Close" range so having a turret would mean yet another thing to build and add onto the ship or to repair when a ship gets a glancing blow.
Because turret based that fired in far distance is expensive, required high maintenance and manpower, so making it fixed and let your ship engine as your solution and hull as protection is cheap and efficient (plus the weapon itself is already insanely accurate and has sort of wide angle firing)
They fight in space, where 3D movement is easy and completely possible, yet all they do is move in a 2d dimension, and all their shieldings and weapons are on the front of their ships?
They usually fight at distances measured in lightseconds. At that distance, the Z-axis doesn't really matter as much as even a single degree up or down can result in a massive overshot from their target. Same reason why the majority of there weapons are at the front though shielding is actually all around. It's just that the weapons are way too powerful for their shields. Also, remember that each fleet on average has around 10-15,000 ships PER fleet. The ships are spaced quite evenly on all sides not just on one plane. Since there are so many ships, when moving together, the sheer size of the fleets makes their movement look 2D on depictions.
They do move in 3D! This is, in fact, the only sci-fi I've ever seen where they move in 3D. There are weapons on the sides (you even see them later in the episode) and the shields are in front because that's where most of the fire comes from. Watch the rest of the series, it's great, and the tactics are the best in sci-fi. If you like sci-fi, you won't regret watching the whole series.
Having a completely forward-facing main battery (for line-of-sight weapons at least) and forward concentration of armor is how you get the greatest effect out of your weight capacity. It's for the same reason that most modern tanks put like 75% of their armor to the front; to achieve that level of protection everywhere would require such a weight of armor that you'd take a completely unacceptable hit to mobility.
I would recommend the original anime, Legend of Galactic Heroes. The anime in the video is a reboot and it’s ok but. it doesn’t come close to the original imo.
Space Battleship Yamato. Albeit the first season doesn’t have much fleet battle, mostly one ship vs all enemy in the most desperate situation, the other later seasons saw some bigger actions. Highly recommend to start with the remake, just search Space Battleship Yamato 2199.
Dude in a way, they're aliens. Aliens are just lifeforms outside of your planet. And there's multiple planets. They consider planets like countries so there you go.
Because Humanity only colonised one arm (that being the Sagittarius arm) of a cluster of stars it's very likely that Aliens either aren't aware of Humanity or are only observing them from an obscenely long distance. possibly even in the future, because of how time dilation works.
@@bargainbin6162 that depends on the size of the weapon system, there is no point of having a turret if the barrel makes up 1/4 of the length of your ship. because then that turret will be atrociously large and if you were caught on the side in the first place, you've already fked up.
They have to do that. They fight in distances measured in light seconds so to achieve better precision the guns must have the longest barrels possible, hence the location on the bow. Also, the sizes of the fleets(tens of thousands) elliminates any need for turrets as formations can be adopted to defend. They do have short range missiles for small fighter craft though.
