Thank you Shane. What a fantastic intro. I have been making PowerApps using SharePoint for my data source. Honestly Common Data Service seemed like a scary black hole. However, now I can see what a useful thing it is. I work in a school, so I really need to be able to control access and roles and the CDS roles will really help. As always, your videos are so clear, concise and informative.
Thank you Shane. You explain things well. You helped me get through PowerApps, Sharepoint and now CDS. You are one of the best tutor on those topics. Please have a thought on creating extended / advance version for CDS whenever you can spare time. Keep shining.
Great content as always, I finally see concrete benefits of using the CDS - or 'Dataverse' now. As a bonus, entities are now called tables, so your hesitations on the terminology at the start made me chuckle :)
Thanks, Shane, for this great intro. I’m preparing to build our first canvas app using Dataverse for Teams, & this moved me out of the starting blocks & on to the journey.
Excellant. Much needed. And sign me up for the 8h (or 16h or however long it takes to deep-dive this thing) : it's the big missing piece of the PowerApps picture for me. What we tend to find at the moment as far as learning opportunity goes is more along the lines of "All Hails To CDS" regardless its actual usefulness in the context of canvas (which is counter-productive when you just geniuenly want to learn the darn thing). You hit a great balance there I found.
Hi Shane, thanks for all your videos. They are really helpfull and pleasant to watch ! I have a Power BI background and start learning PowerApps. I tried to create relationships between entities in the CDS but i can't make it work and use the functionality in my app. I don't really understand how it works as I don't have to specify on which fields the entity needs to be set (in contrary to Power BI). Could you make a specific video on that subject please ? There is not much on the web concerning relationships on the CDS and I'm sure it would help a lot of people. Thank you
Excellent video Shane! I especially liked the overview of the security model. I looked into my CDS last week and I wondered why the user entity had been populated, I think you answered that for me 🙂
Hello Shane very helpful video... Below someone asked about using SharePoint as the data source... Can I apply all the security mentioned, and since each SharePoint site has 1TB limit do you recommend this route.... Final question can you compare Storing data in Excel on OneDrive vs SharePoint vs CDS? thank you great videos!
SharePoint doesn’t have the same security options as CDS. Comparing excel vs other datasources is easy. Excel is terrible as a datasource and you should never use it. I need to do a video like that. 😀
do an 8 hour video for a reasonable price, we practice a lot and we do a lot but one good tip or trick might save us hours or days of hard work. Always great Shane 👏
Hi Shane I am following your tutorials and maybe you answered the question before but can I do the same things I do with entities using SharePoint. Do you know limitations of SharePoint against Entities that could be show stoppers specially if I want to combine it with PowerBI?
Almost everything you do in Power Apps is possible no matter the data source. There are no major show stoppers between SharePoint and CDS. CDS is just better at scale and security. But functionality very similiar.
Hi Shane, Your demonstration is brilliant. Though I think you need to add a Pre-requisite here that we need to have PowerApps account of type "Production" or something not "Developer" or Default because we don't have rights to add database in Developer type account I guess.

Thank you Shane. Great job again. In big companies, it's quite rare case when all employees have premium licenses. What data model would you recommend it such cases? SharePoint, Excel?... :)
Great video. I need to build a very simple app which pulls a value from a data set and displays it for a user based on their login.i have got it working using it Excel, but now realise that the user would be able to see all of the data and not just their own, is it possible to use a CDS for this? I want to be able to edit their data, but want the users to only see their own data based in their name for example. Many thanks,
Thanks Shane, We are on Power apps for O365 plan E3 ,will it support CDS ? how to check the license which we have will support CDS or not? we are on Premium plan or on Standard? . In the current plan we deployed few apps now getting the notification like extend the trail or buy , is the current plan which we have will take over and retain the features ?
Hi Shane, you have just about single handedly taught me how to use PowerApps! I appreciate your videos and they are very easy to follow for someone like me with no technical training. I am building a large app for our staff and faculty at our school to use for all things business related (purchase requests, order staff lunch, HR functions, Operations and technology requests etc). Because the app is so large, I want to use CDS to help with performance. So, I created a module of the app for staff lunch orders using the CDS (it was the most simple to start with). I published it and now it's telling me that you have to have a premium license to use the app... I tried downloading it, uploading then renaming it and that didn't work. Any thoughts? Thank you!
Great video Shane! Question for you, so I'm moving my app from SharePoint to Dataverse...how you found any way to duplicate the functionality of a People Picker (multi-person) field in Dataverse? I'm not sure where to start in regards to a table structure and how to submit multiple users and associate it to one record. Let me know if you have any thoughts. Thanks!
Thanks for the great explanation! I have a question regarding entity management though. If you create a lot of apps, doesnt your entity list get overloaded? Is there any way to group your entities or get a "nicer" overview over your entities? Thanks!
Hey Shane, you're making great videos about all of the PowerApps possibilities. CDS is i guess the way to easily share your app without problems of connection with other datasources because it's embedded in your app. But I'm wondering if you could make a video of how to convert an entire excel sheet to cds entities, so you don't need a connection to an external excel sheet.
Hey Pieter if you look at CDS there is an Import from Excel option. from Make.PowerApps.com click Data > Entities and the in the toolbar click Get Data from Excel.
Any video showing more details about relationships ? Like (Product and Client) is a many-to-many. How can I work with this data on the powerapps and CDS ?
Hi Shane, thanks for always sharing these very good informations about all the features of PowerApps. I just have a 2 problems: 1. How can I get rid of the different versions which are always stored in the background? In my Power Apps Gallery it shows always the different versions and I do not all the copies in CDS. It will block my space after a few weeks. 2. I have data from Dynamics 365 (product infomations) and I want to combine this data with a picture from the product which is right now stored in a Sharpoint Documentary Libary. Can I get the picture data from a sharepoint document libary to CDS? I already found the sharepoint Link. This works fine on a desktop computer. But the picture will not apeare on a mobile phone with this link. Thanks a lot for your further videos. I learned a lot from you.
Hi Shane, i've been following your videos and helped me a lot! i have a canvas app that is connected to SharePoint and One drive...how easy is it to shift my data to CDS? will this require major changes on my scripts?
Thank you Shane for the very informative video! Can you please post a video on how to manage security, especially when we create a Dataverse table for specific projects. One thing I found while playing around was with owner field which is automatically set to my name and basic users not able to see it even though I granted them access to my table
Hi Shane, hope you are doing great! I'm creating an app and I need to pull a database that has 300000 rows. Is there a way to manage a database of this size without a premium license?
Thank you for the video, Shane. Lovely introduction in the world of CDS, "Easter bunny" (check your Twitter about this :) ). Hint: in the Custom Entities tab of the CDS User Security Role you can click on the name of the Entity to change ALL permissions at once. Same if you wanted to change Read access for ALL entities at once, click on Read (or Write, or Share etc).

I have a canvas app that is currently pointed to Sharepoint list (over 15000 records), I would like this to be migrated to CDS. I have two question relating to this. 1. Be great if you can do examples using CDS when not using a standard template... Perhaps with an embedded app that needs to look different to a template and search based on your CE record and data on a related record.
Hello I hope you are well, I am developing an app based on the PowerApps "Leave Request" template, unfortunately I am stuck. My problem is the following: I have a record of employees in an excel table, this record contains the day in which they started working in the company and the vacation days have been assigned the problem is that annually from the date in which they started working the days assigned vacations must be restarted with the possibility of saving only 5 days, for example: The employee Robert was assigned 10 days a year of which he only spent 3, which would result in a balance of 7 days but since he has completed his year in the company he can only save 5 days and he is assigned 10 more having a new result 15 days total in the new year. How can I develop this to be done automatically according to the current day and month for all employees at the same time? Thank you very much and sorry for the long question.
Shane, could you please make a video on 1. Create copy of the prod environment - The master environment has the users and privileges but after copying In new environment, I am creating a new app(with the same entities for which the user has full permission I checked under security role -> last tab Entities 🔵) and assigning to same user which is there in Prod(I could see in the new environment all the security role and all other details are copied as well). However that particular user is not able to access the data with the error (Example- No access to data Employees:Null). I could see every security thing is same for that user as prod but still I am getting error. 2. Also, I would like you to please explain how to do this. i) If I import the unmanaged solution from prod to UAT environment and then make some change in the entity(only one entity), canvas and model driven app based on the requirements. Afterthat If I again reimport the unmanaged solution from UAT to PROD then other entities will also be affected? or powerapps will ask before importing the same solution again. Sorry, I could not try it by myself because of some restriction. Kindly make the videos on this ASAP. 🙏🙏
@@ShanesCows thanks Shane for reply i am really stuck in something very important it would be really helpful if you suggest something regarding this, anything or any start would be appreciable.
Hey Shane, thanks for all your videos, they've been a huge help for the last several months as I've been building my app! I've been struggling for a while to allow users to input images inline with text via the rich text editor with no success. A recent update (powerapps.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/announcing-the-rich-text-editor-rte-control/) seemed to say this was now possible, but I think only for CDS/Dataverse based apps, and maybe just for Model driven apps. Do you know if this control is (or perhaps one day will be) available on SharePoint Canvas apps? I'm not sure I could talk my company into purchasing premium licenses for everyone, so I'd like to keep it in SharePoint if I can.
Hi, is there a way my few users who require a power app to pull info from cds to use my permission (license) to do so? Sort of like how flows can be actioned by a user but use my 'permission' to do so?
Powerapps are all cool and everything, but every time I watch these (excellent) videos is, I question myself; why don't you just learn real programming? By the time you learn all these crazy quirks and ever-changing platform , you could learn php or .NET of some other stable, mainstream development platform. As long as you do simple things, this makes tremendous sense, but beyond a certain point of complexity, nobody other than the person who built this could ever have a prayer of extending or supporting one of these.
I had the same thought while watching another video by Shane. Fantastic insights into how to use Flow, but it looked like a form of visual coding that is far more cumbersome than just writing code. Working with the common data service web API directly looks significantly more appealing.
Hi Shane, I use CDS to manage contacts but my employer uses Google Contacts because of its mobile/Bluetooth interface in his car etc. I know there is a Google Connector in Powerapps but it has limitations (ie, you can create a Google Contact from Powerapps but you cannot delete that contact from Google Contacts from Powerapps. There are also certain fields that you cannot assign values to). Would you be interested in doing a video demonstrating how to work these two platforms together? I wonder whether using UI/PowerAutomate also would come up as part of the solution as per this link that got me thinking about about a way forward from where I am stuck: ruclips.net/video/bZrrdoytTH0/видео.html Thx for considering this and for any tips/feedback. Stay well! Gerald Dahl
@@ShanesCows Hi Shane - thx for your reply. Unfortunately I can't get the existing connectors/templates offered around Outlook Contacts and Outlook for Office 365 to work. I've also attempted to use the UI/Selenium method as described by Jon Levesque but my runs time out. Stay well - Gerald Dahl

Wow that is a lot.
@@ShanesCows Please make video on permissions and managed unmanaged solutions.
Good intro on CDS, now we need more! :)
Working on it 😻
@Shane is there any way to find the co-owner of the powerapp using ms flow
I don’t know. Never tried but I would think so
@@ShanesCows thanks Shane for reply i am really stuck in something very important it would be really helpful if you suggest something regarding this, anything or any start would be appreciable.
MORE CDS vids!!!! Great job btw :)
Relationships is next 😀
Shane Young yes!!!! When? ;)
What plan (Powerapps) do you use?
It depends. CDS is a premium connector so you will need a premium license to use any app that has CDS as a data source.
Hey Luke. I had that request a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't figure out a good answer either :(
great video!
Thanks
can you create series on model driven powerapps
I haven’t built many myself but hopefully that will change sooner than later. Then I could make content. 😎
Hi, is there a way my few users who require a power app to pull info from cds to use my permission (license) to do so? Sort of like how flows can be actioned by a user but use my 'permission' to do so?
Thank you Shane!
You are welcome!
can we add Activity type entity to canvas app?
I am not sure.
I'm ready for the 8 hour video 😆
The license is premium though :( not accessible
It is a premium license. 😑
Because once you learn to do all of this, you can develop apps about 8x faster, distributed across virtually any data source that has an API.
Thank you!
You are welcome 🙏

😀
So.. good. FWIW I'd pay money for a course from you
☺️ Thanks. We have lots of classes at training.powerapps911.com including two live options. Would love to have you. 😃
Keys can help you out prevent entering duplicates
Thanks :)
Perfect timing .. as usual! lol
Glad to help. 😀
Common Data Service connector is now gone. Wtf?
Search for Dataverse. They renamed it.
I wonder whether using UI/PowerAutomate also would come up as part of the solution as per this link that got me thinking about about a way forward from where I am stuck: ruclips.net/video/bZrrdoytTH0/видео.html
Thx for considering this and for any tips/feedback. Stay well! Gerald Dahl
Hi Gerald have you looked to see if there is an API so you could make all your own actions. Could be fun for you to dig into b
